6 Claims. (Cl. 242-85) The present invention relates to a starter rope holder and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.

Generally there is provided a holder for the conventional starter rope utilized for the starting of internal combustion engines such as are used, for example, in lawn mowers, outboard motors for boats and the like. The device is provided with simple means for the quick and easy attachment of the same to, for example, the handle shaft or shafts of a lawn mower or upon any like structure associated with devices utilizing internal combustion engines which are started with a starter rope. Means is also provided for mounting the conventional handle of such starter rope.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for mounting the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for removably retaining thereon the conventional handle of a starter rope.

It is also an object of the invention to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel guide plates and novel spacing means for such plates whereby a starter rope may be wound upon such spacer means between the plates.

Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:

Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view, somewhat enlarged, of the device illustrated in Figure 1,

Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the device shown in Figure 2, and

Figure 4 is a plan view of a modified form the invention may assume.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth comprising a clamp plate apertured adjacent each of its ends as indicated at 11 and centrally apertured, as indicated at 12. An inner guide plate 13 and an outer guide plate 14 are also provided and are preferably and as shown identical in size and shape with the clamp plate 10. The inner guide plate 13 is apertured adjacent its ends, as indicated at 15.

A pair of rivets 16 interconnect the guide plates 13 and 14 inwardly of the ends thereof and each of such rivets is encompassed by an elongated collar 17 whose ends bear against the adjacent faces of the guide plates 13 and 14 to maintain such plates in parallel spaced relation to each other. The plate 13 is centrally apertured, as indicated at 18 and a bolt 19 extends through the apertures 12 and 2,72 1,71 l Patented Oct. 25, 1955 18 and is provided at its inner end with a washer 20 and retaining nut 21.

Mounted upon the outer face of the outer guide plate 14 as by welding 22 is a ring 23 and, likewise attached as by welding 24 tov the outer face of'the plate 14 adjacent its other end is a split ring'25 whose free ends are canted away from each other as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4.

In operation, when it is desired to mount the device upon a pair of spaced shafts 26 ofthe handles 27 of a lawn mower, it will be apparent that the same may be quickly and easily mounted thereon by extendingthe bolt 19 through the apertures 12 and 18 after the clamp plate 10 has been placed upon one. side of the shafts 26 and the inner guide plate 13 placed uponthe other. By tightening the nut 21, it will be seen that the device may be securely attached to such shafts 26 and thatthe starter rope and its handle indicated by dot and dash lines 28 and 29,

respectively, in Figure 2 may be supported thereby. The handle 29 is first mounted upon the outer face of the outer guide plate 14 by inserting one end thereof into either the ring 23 or split ring 25 and then shifting the handle endwise to engage the other end thereof in the other ring, after which the starter rope is wound over the spacing collars 17 between the guide plates 13 and 14, and when substantially all of such rope has been wound thereon, the knotted end portion 30 of the rope is then inserted through the slit of the ring 25 and tightly forced between said ring and the handle 29 which retains both the rope and handle in proper supported positions on the holder. It will be seen that the device thus forms a convenient means for the storing of such starter rope and its handle so that it may be conveniently removed from the device whenever it is necessary to use the same for the starting of the motor with which it is associated.

In Figure 4 of the drawing, where there is shown a pair of handle shafts 35 which are closely aligned and where the use of the bolt 19 would be impossible, bolts 31 are extended through the openings 11' and 15 at adjacent ends of the plates 10 and 13 and, provided with washers 32 and retaining nuts 33, it being apparent that the clamp plate 10' is now deformed by providing a recess 34 for the reception therein of the two shafts 35, the operation of the device being identical with that above described.

While I have herein described a specific form which the invention may take, it will be understood that changes and modifications may be made by those skilled in the art which still fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

I. In combination with a motor starter rope and handle thereon, a holder for said rope and handle when not in use, said holder comprising a pair of parallel spaced plates rigidly attached inwardly of their edges and forming a reel for the rope, a third plate adjustably attached to one of said rigidly attached plates and together with said rigidly attached plate forming a clamp for supporting the holder on an object, and carrying means on the other of said rigidly attached plates for the handle on the rope.

In combination with a motor starter rope and handle thereon, a holder for said rope and handle when not in use, said holder comprising a pair of parallel spaced plates rigidly attached inwardly of their edges and forming a reel for the rope, a third plate adjustably attached to one of said rigidly attached plates and together with said rigidly attached plate forming a clamp for supporting the holder on an object, and a pair of ring-like members aflixed to the outer face of the other of said rigidly attached plates, said ring-like members being in axial alignment for receiving therein the opposite ends of the handle on the rope.

In combination with a motor starter rope and handle thereon, a holder for said rope and handle when not in use, said holder comprising a pair of parallel spaced plates rigidly attached inwardly of their edges and forming a reel for the rope, a third plate adjustably attached to one of said rigidly attached plates and together with said rigidly attached plate forming a clamp for supporting the holder on an object, a solid ring affixed to the outer face of the other of said rigidly attached plates, and a split ring also aifixed to the outer face of said last-mentioned plate, said rings being in axial alignment for receiving therein the opposite ends of the handle on the rope. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the rigid attachment of the parallel spaced plates that form the reel consists of a pair of spaced parallel rivets interconnecting said plates, and a spacer collar mounted on each of said rivets in abutting relation to the adjacent faces of said last-mentioned plates.

5. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the adjustable attachment of the third plate to one of the rigidly attached plates consists of a threaded bolt centrally interconnecting the third plate to said rigidly attached plate.
