4 Claims. (Cl. 361) This invention relates to baby shoes and, more particularly, to a new and useful improvement in identification means for a babys shoe.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a babys shoe with identification means inscribed on the sole thereof.

Another object of the invention is to provide an identification means on the sole of a babys shoe which is clear in outline, attractive in appearance and permanent in character.

A further object of the invention is to provide a babys shoe with identification means which does not in any way either damage the shoe or impair its usefulness.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a babys shoe with novel identification means and a novel method of applying the same to the shoe.

It is further proposed to produce an identification means of a babys shoe which is simple in construction and inexpensive to apply.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a baby shoe embodying one form of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of a baby shoe embodying a modified form of the invention.

In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the first form of the invention is shown as comprising a baby shoe 10 of conventional form including an upper portion 11 of flexible leather and an outer sole 12 of flexible leather secured together by stitching 13. An inner stiffening sole 14 of any suitable material such as cardboard may be fastened to the inner surface of the outer sole 12 by adhesive or in any other suitable manner. The shoe is preferably of a white color.

In accordance with the present invention, an identification means is marked on the outer surface of the outer sole 12 of the shoe. This identification consists of the name of the baby on a line arranged lengthwise of the sole as indicated at 15, or the date of birth of the baby, or both on the same or on a separate line. The name and/or date of birth are inscribed on the outer surface of the outer sole in script form by means of needle thread or yarn 17 interwoven in the material of the outer sole so as to form the outline of the letters of the name and the letters and numerals of the date of birth. The identication means is thus made an integrated part of the shoe. The thread is preferably of a color in contrast to the color of the outer surface of the shoe in order to make the inscription clearly visible and attractive in appearance.

In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 4,

5 and 6, the outer sole 12' of the baby shoe 10 is formed with a central depressed or countersunk portion 18 and an outer protruding rim 19 thereby providing an inner groove 29 therearound.

In this form of the invention the identification consists of the name of the baby as indicated at 15 and the date of birth as indicated at 16, both inscribed by means of yarn 17 which extends outwardly from the countersunk portion 18 of the outer sole 12'. The inner sole 14 is formed with an indented area 18* and a thickened rim 21 which fits in the groove 21' thereby reinforcing the outer sole and preventing collapse of the depressed portion 18. The inscription formed by the thread 17 is in scribed on the depressed portion 18. When walking on the shoe 10, the protruding rim 19 of the outer sole 12' contacts the surface of the thread 17 interwoven in the depressed portion 18 of the outer sole and forming the inscription does not touch such surface and is thereby protected from wear.

After the infant has outgrown the shoe with the embroidered identification a permanent metal casting may be made of the worn shoe with a legible identification formed by the raised embroidered inscription.

In all other respects, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is similar to the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, and similar reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts.

While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

l. A shoe including an upper portion, an outer sole of flexible material secured to said upper portion, said outer sole having a protruding rim and a central depressed portion, and identification indicia secured within the width of the said central depressed portion so as not to touch the surface of the ground and thereby be protected from wear.

2. A shoe including an upper portion, an outer sole of flexible material secured to said upper portion, said outer sole having a protruding rim and a central depressed portion, and identification indicia secured within the width of the said central depressed portion so as not to touch the surface of the ground and thereby be protected from wear, said indicia being inscribed by means of yarn threaded in said outer sole.

3. A shoe including an upper portion, an outer sole of flexible material secured to said upper portion, said outer sole having a protruding rim and a central depressed portion, and identification indicia secured within the width of the said central depressed portion so as not to touch the surface of the ground and thereby be protected from wear and an inner stifiening sole seated in said rim and overlying said depressed portion to reinforce the outer sole and protect the foot.

4. The combination of claim 3, wherein said rim forms an annular seat, and said stiffening sole includes a thickened rim seated therein, and a central indented area in spaced relation to said central depressed portion.
