Description
UNITED STATES SOLOMON HEILNER,
or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 268,794, dated December I2, 1882.
Application filed September 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it vknown that I, SOLOMON HEILNER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Corsets, of' which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and making part thereof.
My invention applies to that part of the corset which consists-of the opening through the length of the corset at the back, and which is usually closed by lacing-cords drawn through eyelet-holes in the corset at or near the two edges ot' the opening, and which cords. passing Vfrom one side to the other of the opening, draw and secure the two edges together; and it consists in the construction of a protector of a separate part of elastic materials and cloth, similar to the elastic materials and cloth of the body ofthe corset, of sutiicient length to extend over the opening in the back ot' the corset and widening from top to bottom, so as to be slightly wedge -shaped, and connected to the corset only by the lacing-cords passing through eyelets in this separate part and on the edges of the corset-opening, so that by the ad!` justment ofthe cords the opening at the back can be adjusted to a greater or less` width at the lower or upper portion, as may snit the shape and comfort ot' the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, in Figure 1, the outline ot' the back ofthe corset is shown with the opening and eyelets near the edges,
but without the lacingcord attached. In Fig. 2 is shown a view of the separate part or wedgeshaped piece, which is a protector intended to cover the opening at the back ot' the corset, the eyelet-holes by which it is to be held in place being shown in their Iproper positions. In Fig. 3 is a representation ofthe opening of the corset at the back and the protector in place thereon, and the lacing ends drawn through the eyelets.
A represents the body ot the corset at the back, having the opening with the eyeletl the bottom than at the top, which is requisite to adapt the corset to the form or yfigure of the wearer. In this protector B are the four pairs of two pairs near the middle between the two ends, as shownn the drawings. The separate piece B need not necessarily be of the same material as the corset-body; but it may be made and elastic substances. The protector B is attached on the under side of the opening of the corset by the lacing-cord O, which draws and secures the two edges ofthe corset together in the usual manner, excepting that at the top and bottom the lacing-cord is drawn through the two eyelet-holes b and across the space between them, and thence into the corresponding eyelet-holes, a, on the edges of the opening, and on the middle eyelet-holes the lacing-cord is drawn through one'pair ofthe eyeletholes, b', as it crosses from one edge to the other, and also throughA the other pair of eyelets, b', as it crosses to the opposite edge. The lacing-cord C, where it passes through the middle eyelets, b b', being long enough, is drawn out, so as to afford loose double strings for adjusting and tying the end, so as to adjust the opening over the protector B, as may be desired. By this construction and arrangement the lower portion of the corset may be considerably widened, as shown in Fig. 3, without leaving any open space betweenthe two edges, the space being always filled by the protector B, and in like manner the upper part may be widened, when desired. The point offastening, being midway between the top and bottom, admits of the opening being enlarged at either end.
B y -this improved construction of the corset the adjustment to the form ot' the wearer is facilitated and the enlargement ot' the corset provided for without exposing that part ot' the body ot' the wearer to the sensation of cold from the widening ofthe opening, and the elasticity and flexibility ot' the protector B adapts itselt'to the back and the movement ofthe body ot' the wearer independently ot' the stii edges of the opening of the corset, and lends an easy and pleasant support to the spinal column.
The principal feature ot" my invention herein set `forth is the protector B, and therefore eyelet-holes, b b b, one pair near each end and of annel and cloth, or any suitable material IOO e v I 268,794
while I claim the manner within describedof connecting the same with thevopening of the corset, yet I am aware that other means may be adopted for connecting each separate piece bya lacing-cord to the opening withoutdeparting` from the principal feature of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a corset, the protector B, in a separate piece, adapted to cover the opening` in the back of the corset, and adapted to be adjusted and to be heldin place tector, as shown, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with acorset, the protector B, in a separate piece, made wider at the bottom than at the top, and having the pairs ol' eyelets b b b b, the protector being adapted to @over the opening in the back of the corset when the latter is adjusted to form a vvider openingat the bottom than at the top, and to be held in place Aby the lacing-oord Ofpassed through the eyelet-holes, substantially as set forth.
