Description

Patented `lan. l19, 1954 "UNITED s'mrss param ori-"ICE"rv 2,666,222 oosME'rIo APPLYING BRUSH Don Gordon, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application October 3, 1950, Serial N o. 188,227
' z Claims. (01.154185) My invention relates generally to cosmetic applicators and more particularly to the smaller sizes of applicators adapted to be carried in the purse or hand bag and provided with a small brush whereby rouge may be readily applied to the lips, likewise, color to the eye brows and among the objects of my invention are, to provide a simple, compact and convenient applicator comprising a small container or housing which receives a sliding member carrying the rouge applying brush while the latter is not in use and the construction and mounting of the brush carrier being such as to close the container after the brush has been drawn thereinto, thus eliminating the requirement for a removable closure cap, with itsv attendant possibilityr of being mislaid or vlost when removed trom the brush housing or container. v
Furtherobjects Yof my invention are, to generally improve upon and simplify the constructionof'the'various forms of lip rouge applicators now on the market, to minimize production costs of a small, convenient rouge applicator and to provide a device of the character referred to which, with slight modifications, may serve as a pen or pencil.
With the `foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novelfeatures of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully `described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged elevational View partly in vertical section of a rouge applicator of my improved structure,
Fig. 2 is an elevational View of my improved applicator looking in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the upper portion of the applicator and showing the brush carrier in position within the housing or container,
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken lengthwise through the center of one of the twin parts of the sliding member which carries the reversible brush holder,
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 2,
Fig, 6 is an elevational view of one of the twin parts of the sliding member and showing the brush carrier turned into an inclined position thereon,
Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken on the line 'l-1 of Fig. 6,
8 is a detail elevational view of the upper portion of the device with parts in section and showing the sliding member provided at its inner end with a ball point pen.
- Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing whichA illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, I designates a tubular shell or housing of thin metal, plastics, or the like, open at one end and closed at the other.
Arranged for sliding movement into and'from housing IIB, is a cylindrical member divided centrally lengthwise to form practically identical members I I and I2 which serve as the carrier for the reversible brush holder I3, later described in detail.
Formed in the outer face of carrier member I Il is a longitudinal groove I4, into which projects a pin I5 seated in housing I0, thus limiting the travel of the members II and I2 outwardly from housing I0,
The inner faces of the lower portions of members II and I2 are provided with recesses I6 which contain an expansive coil spring Il tending to force said members apart and thereby producing suiiicient friction to yieldingly anchor the member II and I2 against the housing I0, at any desired point in their travel. l
The upper inner portions of members Il and I2, are recessed or cut away to provide a longitudinally disposed pocket I8, for accommodation of the pivoted reversible brush carrier I3.
In order that the outer ends of members I I and I2 may exert a gripping effect on the interposed portion of carrier I3, the upper portions of the inner flat faces of said members are very slightly inclined toward the tops of said members, as designated by the bracket I9, Fig. 4. Such gripping action acts as a brake to retard too free movement of the brush carrier when same is swung into and out of its position for use. EX- ternal shoulders 20, formed on the upper portions of members II and I2, provide a circumferential stop to limit the sliding movement of said members into housing i0. Pivoted brush carrying member I3 comprises a block 2l having flat sides faces which bear upon the slightly inclined inner faces I9 at the sides of the upper portion of pocket I8, the outer end of said block terminating in a dome shaped member 22 and the opposite end of said block having a stem 23, in the end of which is seated bristles to form a brush 24.
On the side faces of block 2! are longitudinal ribs 25, which, when the brush is in full open or closed position, occupy shallow longitudinal grooves 26, formed in the faces of members Il
