TRAVEL BAG Application July 28, 1950, Serial No. 176,438

1.4 Claims.

This invention relates to travel bags.

An object of this invention is to provide a highly improved garment bag which may be folded and carried like luggage.

Another object of this invention is to provide a highly improved travel bag of the character described having an outer flexible portion and an inner flexible portion, seamed thereto at the marginal edges of said portions, the inner portion being provided with an opening, a transverse intermediate sleeve at the inner side of the outer portion and receiving a transverse dowel or stiffener, and a. handle engaging the dowel and passing through openings in said outer portion of the bag.

A further object of this invention is to provide in a bag of the character described a loop on which the hook of a garment hanger may be hung, and a second loop attached to the first loop at one end and receiving said second loop and slidable therealong to grip the garment hanger hook to prevent the hangers from slipping out of supporting engagement with the first loop.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a highly improved travel bag of flexible sheet material which shall be easy to fold, which may be carried by a handle when folded, which may be hung in a closet or in a car when unfolded, which is provided with means to render easy access to the interior of the bag, which shall serve both as a garment bag and as a piece of luggage, which shall be substantially air-tight so as to prevent dust from, entering the bag, and said bag being so constructed that when it is carried the. garments therein will not crumple.

Yet another object of this invention is to providein a bag of the character described, means at one. end of the bag to suspend the bag from its upper end,v a reinforcing dowel or stiffener at the inside of the. bag about one-third of the way down from its upper end, and provided with a handle extending to the outside of the bag, and a second dowel? or stiffener about two-thirds of the way down at the inside of the bag, the lower third of the. bag being foldable upwardly about the lower dowel or stiffener, and the middle third of, the bag together with the. upwardly folded bottom third being then folda'ble upwardly about the upper dowel or. stiffener, means being provided to attach. the upwardly folded middle and lower thirds of the. bag: to the upper end of the bag, and. said bag being adapted to be carried by the handle. on the: upper dowel or stiffener.

Yet a. further: object of this invention is to provide a bag of the. character described, means adjacent the upper end of the bag to receive theupper corners of the upwardly folded middleand bottom thirds of the bag; when said middle and bottom thirds are folded upwardly,- whereby to provide a neat and compactly folded bag which is attractive in appearance and smooth and. easy to carry.

Still another object of this invention is to provide in a bag of the character described, a transverse dowel or stiffener having buckle straps atta-ched to the ends thereof to keep theclothing wrinkle-free.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a highly improved bag of the character described having a back wall and a front wall attached thereto at their marginal edges by means of a binding strip, the bag being provided at its upper end with means to suspend the bag from a support and also provided at its upper end with means on which to hang garment hangers, and provided at an intermediate portion with a transverse rigid reinforcement member to which is attached a handle passing through the back wall to the outside so that a portion of the bag below the handle may be folded upwardly and the folded bag then turned around to bring the handle to the top so that the bag may be carried by means of the handle.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a neat and durable travel bag of the character described which may bemade of plastic sheeting, which shall be relatively inexpensive. to manufacture, easy to fold, which shall, be easy to hang clothes in, which shall be easy to carry and handle, and which shall yet be practical and emcient to a high degree in use..

Other objects of this invention will in part. be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out;

The invention accordingly consists in thefeatures of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, I8 designates a bag embodying the invention. The same comprises an outside wall II of flexible synthetic thermoplastic sheeting or other flexible sheet material. The outer wall I I is substantially rectangular in shape, but with its corners curved. Attached to the marginal edge of the outer wall II is an inner wall I2 of flexible synthetic plastic sheeting or other flexible sheet material. The inner wall I2 may comprise a pair of side panels I3, extending from the lower end of the outside wall II to the upper end and having inwardly extending portions |3a at their upper ends interconnected by a panel portion I4. If desired. the panel portions I3 and I4 may be made of a single piece of sheeting.

The inner wall I2 further comprises a central panel I5 which extends upwardly from the lower end of the outer wall and is disposed between the panels I3. Panel I5 extends upwardly to the lower edges of the panel portions I311 and the panel I4. The panels I3, I4 and I5 are attached to the outside wall II by means of a marginal binding strip I1.

' The panel I 5 is separated from the panels I3 and I4, from a point indicated at 20 somewhat below the upper end of one side edge of the panel I5 all across the top and down the other side to a point designated by numeral 2 I, spaced somewhat above the lower end of the bag. The separated part of the panel I5 constitutes a closure flap which may be designated by numeral 22.

Stitched to the panels I3 and I4 and to a binding strip I9, is a tape carrying slider actuated fastener elements 23, which may be united to slider actuated fastener elements 24 on a tape stitched to a binding strip I8 and to the complementary edge of the cover flap 22. The fasteners 23 and 24 may be united by the usual slider 25. The portions of panels I3 and I5 below point 20 on one side and below point 2| on the other side are interconnected by narrow gussets 21 (see Fig. 3). said anel portions and gussets being stitched to the binding tapes I8 and I5.

For the purpose hereinafter appearing there is stitched to the inner side of the bag adjacent its upper end, a pair of downwardly and outwardly inclined relatively wide straps 3U, symmetrical with respect to one another. The straps 35 may be provided with binding tapes 3| at their opposite edges. The binding tapes 3| meet at the middle of the upper edge of the bag as at 32. It will be noted that the straps form upper cut out corners. It will be further noted that the straps 30 overlie the upper corners of the panel I5. When the slider 25 is moved upwardly from point 20 then around the upper edge of the panel I5 and then down to the point 2|, the cover flap 22 is opened so as to give access to the interior of the bag for inserting garments therein or removing the same therefrom.

Stitched to the upper end of the bag and at the inside thereof and at opposite sides of the center of said upper end, are a pair of downwardly extending loops 34. Extending through the loops and suspended thereby is a stiffener or rigid dowel 35 which made be made of wood, plastic or any other suitable material.

Fused to the inner surface of the outside wall II at the middle of the upper end thereof, is a trip of thermoplastic sheeting 36. Said strip as well as the back wall II are formed with registering slots 37. Mounted on the middle of the dowel 35 is a member 38 having a number of functions, as will be described hereinafter. The member 38 may be made from a single strip 39 of flexible plastic material. One end of the strip 39 is at 40. Extending from the end 40 is a loop portion 4| attached to end 40 by eyelets 42. Extending from the loop portion 4| is a portion 43 which extends upwardly, and extending therefrom is a portion 44 passing around the back of the dowel 35. Extending upwardly from the portion 44 through the Opening 31 is a portion 45. Extending from portion 45 is a loop portion 45. Extending from the loop portion 46 is a portion 41 contacting the portion 45 and attached thereto by eyelets 48. Extending from the portion 41 is a portion 49 surrounding the opposite side of the dowel 35. Extending from the portion 49, downwardly, is a portion 50 which is riveted to the portion 43 below the dowel by eyelets 5| Extending from portion 50 is a downwardly and upwardly looped portion 52, and extending upwardly from said looped portion 52 is the other end 53 of member 38. The portion 53 is received between the portions 50 and 43 and is attached to said portions by said eyelets 5|. The upper loop 46 may be used to engage a hook 55 attached to any support, such as a closet or in an automobile. The hooks 55 of garment hangers 55a may be engaged with the lower loop 52. The loop 4| surrounds portions 50 and 53 and is slidable thereon. Upon sliding the loop 4| downwardly on loop 52, the hook 56 of the garment hanger will be gripped to prevent accidental slipping of the garment hangers off the strip or loop 52.

For the purpose hereinafter appearing there is attached to the loop 45, a female snap fastener element 51. It will now be understood that the travel bag may be hung up on a hook or support. Furthermore the garment bag may be suspended from the usual pole in a closet by slipping a hooked member into the loop 46 and engaging the hook portion thereof with the usual pole in the closet.

The outer wall I I of the garment bag is formed with a. pair of aligned slots 60, equi-distant from the longitudinal midsection and about one-third of the way down from the upper end of said wall. Attached to the inner surface of said wall II is a transverse elongated strip 6| of thermoplastic material. The strip BI is of less length than the width of the wall II and terminates short of opposite sides of the latter. It overlies the slots 60.

It will be noted that the slits 63.- terminate short of the upper and lower edges: of. the: strip 61:. Thus the dowel 66 is located betweenthe sleeves 6.5. and the wall l=l.- It'also overlies. the portion of. the strip-ti between said sleeves. The outer ends of the-dowel project beyond the sleeves as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. I

On the dowel is a handle 61. The handle 6'! may be made of an elongated strip of synthetic plastic material or of any other suitable flexible material. Said handle 61' is formed with loops 6 8 at its free ends which are passed through the registering openings 60, the dowel 6-5 then being passed through the loops. The loops 68 prefer ably have a sliding or frictional fit on the dowel 66. Attached to the outer ends of the dowel, as by stapling as indicated at 69, are the outer ends of strap portions 10 which may be buckled together by means of an int-erengaging buckle H It will now be understood that when garments are hung. on a hanger 56a said garments may be placed between the strap 70 and thedowel. 66,. to keep the clothes from wrinkling. The purpose of the handle 61 will be described. hereinafter.

Also attachedv to the inner surfaceof the outside wall ll about two-thirds of the way down from the top of the bag is a second transverse strip 14 of synthetic thermoplastic material. The strip 14 may be fused to the wall H likewise about a pair of parallel spaced lines 15. The. strip 14 is likewise formed with a pair of parallel spaced slits 16 on opposite sides of the middle of the strip, to form sleeves "H. Extending'through the sleeves 11 is another dowel 6'6 projecting beyond the sleeves and carryinga strap 10, similar to the strap 10 described above. The strip T4 maybe fused to the wall I I about .a pair of spaced areas 19, located similarly to the fused areas about the registering slots 60, 64".

It will now be understood that the dowel E6 overlies the portion of the strip M between the slits it, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

Attached to the superposed strip M and wall I! at the middle thereof is a male-snap fastener 82, the head of which projects outwardly. It will nowbe understood that garments hung on the hanger 56a may bepassed between both the straps ill and their dowels 6b,. to keep the garments fiat against the back wall H.

The bag may be either hung on a hook or in a closet, and the slider 25 moved to close the cover flap 22, and in such position the bag serves as a garment bag for storing or hanging clothes. The bag maybe hung in a car and carried that way with the clothes hanging down. However,

The bag is then turnedaround so that. the handle 6'! is atv the top and the bag can. then be carried by means of said handle, like a piece of luggage.

At the middle of the back wall SI and at the inside thereof is fused a strip 6| similar to the strip 55 shown in Fig. 3 and similarly supporting a dowel 56 carrying a buckled strap id. The only diiference is that in Fig. 10 there is only a single dowel at the middle dividing the bag in half instead of the bag being divided in thirds by two dowels, as. in. Fig. 3-. In Figs. 12. and 1'3 there: is shown a bag lilb embodying the invention. and illustrating yet another modified construction. The bag llllb'has a back wall 98. Wall and panels 9| and 93 are of flexible sheeting. At the upper end of the bag lil'b is a member 38 similar to the one shown above, but with the snap fastener 5'! omitted. Member 33 is mounted on a dowel 95 carried by loops 95 stitched within the body.

At the middle of the back wall 90 is a strip 61 carrying a dowel pin 86 in the manner described above. On said dowel is a handle 6'! likewise similar to the handle 6? described above. Garment hangers may be hung on member 38 and garments carried thereby may be placed between the strap 79 and the dowel $8. The bag may be hung by means of the member 33 on any suitable support. When desired to use the bag [9b as a piece of luggage, the upper half is folded downwardly about the dowel t and tucked within the pocket forming panel 93. The bag may then readily be carried by means of its handle 61 as a piece of luggage as shown in Fig. 13.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

stiffener within the bag, and a loop depending from the middle of said stiffener on which to hang garment hangers, a loop projecting through said bag and supported by the stiffener, for suspending the garment bag from a support, a second transverse stiffener within the bag and at the inner side of the back wall, and a handle on said second stiffener and passing through openings in the back wall for carrying the bag as a piece of luggage and a strap attached to the outer ends of the second stiffener to keep the garments with in the bag against the back wall of the bag and to support the garments when the bag is folded and carried by the handle on the second stiffener.

2. A travel bag comprising a back wall, and a front wall stitched thereto and formed with an opening, a transverse stiffener within the upper end of the garment bag,.means to mount said stiffener within the bag, and a loop depending from the middle of said stiffener on which to hang garment hangers, a loop projecting through said bag and supported by the stiffener, for suspending the garment bag from a support, a second transverse stiffener within the bag and at the inner side of the back wall, and a handle on said second stiffener and passing through openings in the back wall for carrying the bag as a piece of luggage, and a strap attached to the outer ends of said second stiffener, and means at the inner side of the bag within which another part of the bag may be tucked when folded for aiding in keeping the bag in folded condition.

3. A travel bag having a back wall and a front wall stitched to the margin of the back wall, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be placed in the bag or removed therefrom, said rear and front walls being made of flexible sheet material, a transverse stiffener-at the upper end of the bag, means in the bag to mount said stiffener, means attached to the stiffener and passing through the bag on which to suspend the bag from a support, means on said stiffener on which to hang garment hangers within the bag, a second stiffener transverse of the bag and spaced from the top and bottom of the bag, and a andle attached to the second stiffener and passing through the bag for carrying the bag and a strap attached to the ends of the second stiffener to keep the garments within the bag against the back wall of the bag and'to support the garments when the bag is folded and carried by the handle on the second stiffener.

4. A travel bag having a back wall and a front wall stitched to the margin of the back wall, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be placed in the bag or removed therefrom, said rear and front walls being made of flexible sheet material, a transverse stiffener at the upper end of the bag, means in the bag to mount said stiffener, means attached to the stiffener and passing through the bag on which to suspend the bag from a support, means on said stiffener on which to hang garment hangers within the bag, a second stiffener transverse of the bag and spaced from the top and bottom of the bag, and a handle attached to the second stiifener and passing through the bag for carrying the bag, and a pair of inclined straps attached to the bag in front of the front wall and extending from the upper end of the bag to side edges of the bag, so that an upfolded portion of the bag may be tucked in between said straps and the front of the bag.

5. A travel bag having a back wall and a front Wall stitched to the margin of the back wall, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be placed in the bag or 'removed therefrom, said rear and front walls being made of flexible sheet material, a transverse stiffener at the upper end of the bag, means in the bag to mount said stiffener, means attached to the stiffener and passing through the bag on which to suspend the bag from a support, means on said stiffener on which to hang garment hangers Within the bag, a second stiffener transverse of the bag and spaced from the top and bottom of the bag, and a handle attached to the second stiffener and passing through the bag for carrying the bag, a pair of inclined straps attached to the bag in front of the front wall and extending from the upper end of the bag to side edges of the bag, so that an upfolded portion of the bag may be tucked in between said straps and the front of the bag, and means to attach an upfolded portion of the bag to the top of the bag to hold said portion in tucked position.

A bag having an outer wall and an inner wall attached thereto, said outer wall being formed with a pair of spaced openings, a strip attached to the inner surface of the outerwall and forming a sleeve therewith, a stiffener passing through said sleeve, and a handle on said stiffener and passing through the openings in the outer wall to the outside of the bag.

7. A bag having an outer wall and an inner wall attached thereto, said outer wall being formed with a pair of spaced openings, a strip attached to the inner surface of the outer wall and forming a sleeve therewith, a stiffener passing through said sleeve, and a handle on said stiffener and passing through the openings in the outer wall to the outside of the bag, and a pair of strap portions attachedto the outer ends of the stiffener, and means to interbuckle said strap portions for holding material within said bag against said dowel.

A travel bag comprising an outer wall and an inner wall attached thereto at the marginal edges of the outer wall, said inner wall being formed with a flap adapted to be closed by slider actuated fasteners, a pair of corner straps at the upper corners of the bag and overlying the front wall, a stiffener in the upper end of the bag, means to mount said stiffener at said upper end, a transverse stiifener at the inside of the rear wall of the bag about one-third of the Way down from the top and provided with a handle projecting through the rear Wall, means to mount said last stiffener in the bag, another transverse stiffener about two-thirds of the way down from the upper end of the bag, means to mount said last stiffener in the bag, the bottom third of the bag being foldable over the middle third about the third stiffener and tucked under the corner straps, and said middle and bottom thirds of the bag being foldable together over the top third of the bag about the second stiffener, whereby the bag can be turned so that the handle is at the top for carrying the bag.

9. A travel bag comprising an outer wall and an inner wall attached thereto at the marginal edges of the outer wall, said inner wall being formed with a flap adapted to be closed by slider actuated fasteners, a pair of corner straps at the upper corners of the bag and overlying the front wall, a stiffener in the upper end of the bag, means to mount said stiffener at said upper end, a transverse stiffener at the inside of the rear Wall of the bag about one-third of the way down from the top and provided with a handle projecting through the rear wall, means to mount said last stiffener in the bag, another transverse stiffener about two-thirds of the way down from the upper end of the bag, means to mount said last stiffener in the bag, the bottom third of the bag being foldable over the middle third about the third stiffener and tucked under the corner straps, and said middle and bottom thirds of the bag being foldable together over the top third o the bag about the second stiffener, whereby -34 the bag can be turned so that the handle is at the top for carrying the bag, and means for attaching the upper end of the bag to a portion of the bag adjacent the third stiffener when said bag is in folded condition.

10. A travel bag comprising a back wall and a front wall attached together at their margins to form a bag, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be inserted into the bag, a stiffener at the upper end of the bag and within the bag, a stiffener within the bag about one-third of the way down and provided with a handle projecting through the bag, and a third stiffener within the bag about two-thirds of the way down from the upper end of the bag, whereby the lower third of the bag may be folded over the front of the middle third and said middle third and bottom third being foldable together over the front of the upper third of the bag, so that the folded bag may be turned around to bring the handle to the top for carrying the bag.

11. A travel bag comprising a back wall and a front Wall attached together at their margins to form a bag, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be in serted into the bag, a stiffener at the upper end of the bag and within the bag, a stiffener within the bag about one-third of the way down and provided with a handle projecting through the bag, and a third stiffener within the bag about two-thirds of the way down from the upper end of the bag, whereby the lower third of the bag may be folded over the front of the middle third and said middle third and bottom third being foldable together over the front of the upper third of the bag, so that the folded bag may be turned around to bring the handle to the top for carrying the bag, and means for attaching a portion of the bag adjacent the upper end thereof to a portion of the bag adjacent the third stiffener to retain the bag in folded condition.

A travel bag comprising a back wall and a front wall attached together at their margins to form a bag, said front wall being formed with an opening through which garments may be inserted into the bag, a stiffener at the upper end of the bag and within the bag, a stiffener within the bag about one-third of the way down and provided with a handle projecting through the bag, and a third stiffener Within the has about two-thirds of the way down from the upper end of the bag, whereby the lower third of the bag may be folded over the front of the middle third and said middle third and bottom third being foldable together over the front of the upper third of the bag, so that the folded bag may be turned around to bring the handle to the top for carrying the bag, means for attaching a portion of the bag adjacent the upper end thereof to a portion of the bag adjacent the third stiffener to retain the bag in folded condition, and a loop attached to the top stiffener and projecting through the bag for suspending the bag from a hook.

13. A garment bag made of flexible front and rear walls, a transverse stiffener within the upper end of the bag, a loop attached to the stiffener and depending therefrom and adapted to receive the hook of a garment hanger, and a second loop attached to the first loop and receiving said first loop and slidable thereon against said hook to keep the hook from slipping off.

A garment bag made of flexible front and rear walls, a transverse stiffener within the upper end of the bag, a loop attached to the stiffener and depending therefrom and adapted to receive the hook of a garment hanger, and a second loop attached to the first loop and receiving said first loop and slidable thereon against said hook to keep the hook from slipping off, and a third loop attached to the stiffener and projecting through the bag for suspending the bag from a hook or like support.
