WHEEL AND AUTOMAT- .TRACTABLE LEGS ltichard cl 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in golf bags and more especially to retractable supporting legs therefor and a built-in wheel to provide a rolling support.
It is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide a golf bag with a pair of swingably mounted supporting legs retractable automatically from an extended bag-supporting position into a retracted position against. the wall of the bag upon lifting a handle associated with the bag when normally gripped and lifted by a user in tipping the bag forward from its standing position.
These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a golf bag made in accordance with my invention and shown in a standing position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view taken approximately along the line 2-2 of Figure 1. v
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the bag tilted forward and supported upon a built-in wheel.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately along the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a rear elevation of the bag showing its supporting legs in a retracted position in full lines and in an extended position in dotted lines.
Figure 6 is a reduced sectional detail view taken approximately along the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawmgs:
As best illustrated in Figure 4, the bag is made up of an internal frame structure indicated at i. stamped out of a single piece of sheet material and formed with upper and lower bands 2 and 3. The covering 4 of the bag proper is secured by rivets, or the like, as at 5 and 6, to the bands 2-3 and to the frame structure I, respectively.
The bottom portion 1 of the bag is likewise secured by the rivets 5 to the lower band 3. This bottom portion is divided into two compartments 8 and 9 by a housing 10 to the walls of which is secured, as at H, any approved type of axle l2 upon which is rotatably mounted a supporting wheel l3. Access openings I4 and closure caps l5 are provided in each compartment for access to the axle l2 when desired or necessary.
As best illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 the periphery of the wheel l3 extends beyond one cort twa e e- Application October 31, 1949, Serial No. 124,528
ner of the lower portion of the bag for rolling contact with the ground and for maintaining the bag elevated with respect to the ground when tilted forward. Thus the bag may be moved along the ground in the position shown in Figure 3 and conveniently held in this tilted position by means of a handle l6.
Also secured to the frame structure I, by means of rivets or screws 6 is an external plate I! formed with two elongated openings I8. These openings are formed by a punching operation along the lines I9, 20 and 2| (see Figure 4) to form plates 22 which are bent inwardly toward each other as shown in Figures 4 and 6. To each of these plates I pivotally attach, as at 23, an arm 24 turned outwardly as at 25 for pivotal attachment to one end of a pair of links 26 whose opposite ends are connected as at 21 to one end of a lever 28 which is pivoted as at 29 to a pair of brackets 30 secured as at 3| to the outside plate IT. The handle I6 is secured to outer end of the lever 28. I
The opposite ends of the arms 24 may be formed integral with or welded or otherwise secured to a pair of legs 32 extending downwardly lengthwise of the bag and movable from the full line to dotted line positions shown in Figure 5. Each leg is made of two parts 33 and 34 slidably engaged with each other and adapted to be locked in adjusted positions with respect to each other by a collar and set screw 35-36 carried by the part 33. The lower end of each leg is provided with a flange 31 to prevent excessive penetration of the legs into the ground.
By gripping the handle, l5, when the bag is in the position shown in Figure 1 and moving it 'forward, the bag, of course, willtilt forwardly until the wheel l3 comes into rolling contact with the ground as shown in Figure 3, at which time the legs 32 will move downwardly and inwardly by gravity from their extended positions shown in dotted lines in Figure 5 to their retracted positions shown in full lines. This movement of the legs is assisted by the outward swing of the lever 28 as the handle, 16, is gripped to hold the bag in the position shown in Figure 3.
When the bag is restored to the standing position shown in Figure l, upward and forward movement of the handle and lever will through the links 26 and arm 24 extend the legs into the position shown in Figure 1 wherein the wheel 13 is elevated from the ground and the bag is firmly resting on one of its bottom corners and the extended legs.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A golf; "bag. comprising an internal] frame structure',-"-arcovering applied to said frame; a
wheel housing extending into the lower portion of the bag, a Wheel rotatably mounted in said housing and extending outwardly from! one cor-- ner of the bag to form a. rollingsupport therefor, a pair oi inwardly converging plates secured to the frame, a pair of legs pivotally attached at their upper ends to said plates, a lever pivotally attached to said frame and interconnected by a pair of links with the uppermost ends of said legs, whereby movement of the lever in tilting the bag away from its rolling support will cause said legs to swing outwardly and rearwardly from said g RICHARD C.
