Application March 3, 1949, Serial No. 79,391
4 Claims. (01. 311-106) The present invention relates to utility game tables and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the invention comprises a square topped card table having legs which are capable of being folded therein when the device is stored and it is provided with four extensions which may be attached to the respective sides of the top by novel means. The extensions are reversible and when one side thereof is presented in an upward direction it lies flush with the top of the table and when the other side is presented in an upward direction it provides a pair of troughs together with a pair of inset portions for the reception of glasses and the like and each of the extensions is also provided with a covered compartment for the storage of poker chips and other paraphernalia.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in its construction and operation and yet effective and eificient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a game table having reversible and detachable extensions.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character set forth wherein the extensions forming a part of the invention may be stored Within the table top.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for supporting and latching an extension for a table top.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a single unitary device which may be utilized as a card table, a game table, and as a dining table which will comfortably seat eight persons and which may be folded into a compact unit of approximately the size of a conventional card table for easy portability making it especially desirable for use in apartments and small homes.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 1, in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along line 4--4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary exploded plan view of the device illustrating the manner of assembly thereof, l
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a table extension element forming a part of the invention,
Figure 7 is a bottom plan view of the device in folded condition,
Figure 8 is a, sectional view takenalong line 8-8 of Figure 7,
Figure 9 is a reduced plan view similar to Figure 1 but showing the extensions in reversed position, and
Figure 10 is a perspective view of a support member and allied structure forming a part of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a utility game table having a square top In provided with four vertical sides H dependant therefrom. One pair of opposed sides II is interconnected by a diagonal vertically extending wall 12 which divides the under side of the table top It] into a pair of substantially triangular compartments l3 and I4.
Each of the sides H is provided with a vertically extending L-shaped bracket 15 adjacent one end thereof and a pin [6 interconnects the bracket H: with the next adjacent side II.
The pins l6 each extend through a slot l1 formed in the upper end of a table leg [8 and a relatively small block 19 is aifixed to the under side of the top l0 adjacent each of the legs 18.
In each of the compartments l3 and I4 is stored a pair of extensions each of which is generally indicated at 20. For holding the extensions 20 in stored position within the top 10, the member I2 is provided with a pair of flat bracket members 2| at its under side and there is also provided a pair of dependant blocks 22 which are attached to the under side of the .top In and which are each provided at each of their lower ends with revoluble latch members 23.
In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the extensions 20, when assembled upon the top H], define a composite table of octagonal shape but it will be apparent that by altering the construction. of the sides of the members 20 that a circular composite table might be formed, if desired.
As illustrated, each of the members 20 is provided with a straight inner face 24, a right angular end 25, an obtuse angular end 26 and a pair of angularly disposed outer faces 21 and 28.
The sides 21 and 28 define a point 29 at their juncture: A block 30 is affixed in the member 20 adjacent the end 25, a block 3| is affixed within the member 20 adjacent the end 26 and a block 32 is afilxed within the extension member 20 adjacent the point 29. A triangular shaped compartment 33 is defined by walls 34 formed in the extension 20 in parallel relation with the sides 21 and 28 and by a wall 35 affixed in the extension member 20 adjacent the inner face 24 thereof. The compartment is provided with a cover 36 connected by means of elastic hinges 31 with the wall 35 and is provided with latch members 38 upon its under side which latch members coact with the walls 34 to normally hold the cover 35 in closed position,
A trough 39 is defined by the side 21, blocks 39 and 32 and the wall 34 and a trough 40 is defined by the side 28, the blocks 32 and 3| and the wall 34. The block 32 is provided with a pair of circular indentations 4| and the block 3| is provided with a like pair of circular indentations 42.
The inner face 24 of the extension 20 is provided with a pair of parallel tongues 43 at the upper and lower edge thereof and the end 25 is provided with tongues 44 which are continuations of the tongues 43. An outwardly extending block 45 is affixed to the face 24 adjacent the end 26 of theextension 20 and it will be understood that the under side of the extension 20, as viewed in Figure 6, presents a smooth surface.
The sides ll of the top Ill extend slightly outwardly of the top l and are provided with horizontally disposed grooves 46 and with openings 41 wherein is centrally pivoted in each case a support member 48. A pin 49 extends through the support 48 and into the side member I! to provide a hinge for the support, which is provided at one end with an upwardly extending detent 50 which is adapted to contact a relatively small block affixed to the underside of the top H] when the support is in extended position. The other end of the support 48 is provided with an extensible latch 52 having a hook 53 at its outer end and provided with a longitudinal slot 53a through which extends a screw 54 which is embedded in the under side of the support 48. A strap or guide member 55 is provided for the extension 52.
In the operation of the device it will be apparent that the same may be folded into a compact unit, all of its component parts being encompassed by the top and sides It and H respectively, as indicated in Figures '7 and 8. When it is desired to use the same as a card table, the legs are first moved to vertical positions, the blocks l9 serving to hold the same rigidly in such positions. The device is now a conventional card table. The extensions 20 will remain in stored position while the device is used as a card table.
To form the same into a game table, the extensions 20 may now be attached to the card table by placing the tongues 43 against the outer edges of the top I 0 and in the grooves 46. As each of the extensions 20 is so positioned, it Will be seen that the block 45 of each will fit between the tongues 44 of the adjacent extension 28. Thereafter the support members 48 may be turned upon their hinges 49 and the latch members 52 may then be extended outwardly until the hooks 53 engage with the points 29 which are each provided with a groove 56 for the reception there of. The device is now a game table and the troughs 39 and 40 provide a convenient means for retaining poker chips, money or the like, and the circular depressions 42 provide a means for holding glasses, etc. The compartment 33 may be used to store such paraphernalia as playing cards, chips and the like when the table is not in use.
When it is desired to utilize the extensions 20 merely to enlarge the table the same may be reversed from the position now described whereupon the same may be attached to the card table portion of the device in the identical manner above described. The upper surfaces of the extensions 20 will now form a continuation in fact of the surface of the top [0,
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may .be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
