Description

Aug. 7, 1951 H. M. HERBENER ARTIFICIAL BUST Filed March '7, 1949 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 7, 1951 Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARTIFICIAL BUST Henry M. Herbener, Thomasville, Ga. Application March 7, 1949, Serial No. 80,018 7 Claims. (01. 2-267) My invention relates to improvements in pads to be applied to or used in connection with women's busts.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which will create the appearance of a full youthful bust.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pad which will raise and support the natural bust.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in'which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2--2 of Figure 3,
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 4,
Figure 4 is aside elevation of the outer face of the pad,
Figure 5 is a similar view of the inner face of the pad,
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of a slightly drooping'bust,
Figure 5 is a similar view, showing the shape and arrangement of the bust after being raised and supported by the pad,
Figure 5 is a similar and applied pad.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of the bust supporter having bust receiving pockets 6, which bulge outwardly, as shown. These pockets taper outwardly and are shaped to correspond generally to the contour of a youthful bust. The body portion 5 has a lower band 1 and shoulder straps 8.
A pad 9 is arranged within each pocket. The contour of the pocket will hold the pad in place but if desired, additional means may be employed to attach the pad to the pocket. The pad is preferably formed of sponge rubber, although it may be formed of any other material. The pad is generally elliptical and its wall tapers toward its marginal edge in. This marginal edge is thin and is biased to move inwardly beyond the inner face of the pad. The thin marginal edge is placed under tension and will cling closely to the bust, when the pad is placed in position. The pad has view of the raised bust an inner main recess H to receive the bust and an inner auxiliary recess l2 to receive the nipple. The recess i2 is vertically inclined and disposed at the longitudinal center of the pad and near its vertical center. The recess H has a lower face H which is vertically convex and an upper face I! which is vertically concave. The faces II and 12 are horizontally concave. The pad has an outer convex substantially spherically curved face l3 and an artiflcal nipple I4 is preferably formed integral with the outer face 13. This nipple is at the longitudinal center of the pad, but at an elevation above the recess l2 and the natural nipple. This nipple may be inclined upward slightly. The lower portion of the pad beneath the recess I2 is thicker and vertically longer than the upper portion of the pad above the recess l2.
In use the pads 9 are inserted in the pockets 6 with the nipples l4 arranged remote from the natural busts. The pads may be attached to the pockets if desired. The supporter 5 is applied to the user and the natural busts enter the main recesses ll of the pads and the natural nipples enter the auxiliary recesses II. The lower convex face I l' of the pad elevates and supports the natural bust, causing the tops of the busts to become convex and enter the recess formed by the face l2. When the lower portion of the bust is raised, Figures 5 and 5, the upper portion is raised and rendered convex, this causing the natural nipple to be inclined downwardly. The downwardly inclined natural nipple enters the auxiliary recess l2, which is considerably larger than the natural nipple, to promote the convenience of the wearer. The artificial nipple I4 is disposed at an elevation above the recess l2, so that the artificial nipple assumes the elevation of the natural nipple, before the bust is raised, Figure 5 The pads being flexible and compressible, readily conform to the contour of the natural busts. The pad 9 may extend downwardly substantially to the body, thereby covering the lower portion of the bust beneath the auxiliary recess l2. The upper portion of the pad 9 above the auxiliary recess is shorter than the lower portion and terminates short of the body, thereby leaving the upper portion of the bust next to the body uncovered. This aids in concealing the use of the device. The applied pad produces the appearance of a full youthful bust.
The pad is also particularly adapted to be worn in connection with the new strapless halfbras now being featured.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
