Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims inv conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of an ash receptacle illustrative of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
With continued reference to the drawings, the ash receptacle comprises an elongated metal tube I of substantially uniform diameter and of a length somewhat greater than the distance from the vehicle instrument board II to the vehicle dashboard or re wall I2. The tube I0 has a diameter suflicient for the easy passage of such objects as cigarette and cigar butts therethrough, and has end walls I3 and I4 closing its opposite ends, each of the end walls being centrally apertured for a purpose which will presently appear.
A spiral screw I5 is disposed in the tube Ill and extends from one end wall to the other. This screw is of a size such that it is substantially in contact with the inner surface of the tube and has a central shaft I6 which is journaled at its ends in the apertures in the end walls I3 and I4.

A flanged, circular cap 23 is secured to the side wall of the tube IIJ adjacent the end wall I4 and the side wall of the tube is provided with an aperture 24 opening into this cap. The cap is disposed on the side of the tube opposite the ash receiving structure I8, so that it depends from the tube when the ash receptacle is mounted in the operative position illustrated in Figure 2, and the flange of the cap is provided with screwthread formations 25.
A hollow container 26 formed of a fire resistant material, such as glass, has an externally screw-threaded rim threaded into the ange of the cap 23 and is dependingly supported from the cap 23 at the outer side of the vehicle dashboard or hre wall I2.
In order to more effectively support the weight of the container 26, a washer 21 is secured to the vehicle dashboard I2 by suitable means, such as the screws 28, and this washer is provided with an aperture which receives the tube I0 and is surrounded by an annular boss 29 engaging the outer surface of the tube and providing a support therefor.
The only modification required in the vehicle construction is the formation of the apertures in the interior cowl I 9, the instrument board II, and the dashboard I2, to receive the tube I0 and the ash receiving structure I8, and when the ash receptacle of the invention is operatively mounted in the vehicle, the elongated tube extends through the vehicle instrument board and dashboard, the ash receiving structure I8 extends upwardly from the tube through the interior cowl of the vehicle and the container I9 is suspendingly supported lby the tube at the outer side of the vehicle dashboard.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. An ash receptacle for an automotive vehicle comprising an elongated tube, apertured end walls secured one in each end of said tube, a helical screw in said tube extending longitudinallY thereof and journaled at its ends in said end walls, means connected to one end of said screw and disposed outside the corresponding end wall for manually rotating said screw to move ashes longitudinally of said tube, a hollow ash receiving structure projecting laterally from said tube at the end of the latter adjacent said means and communicating interiorly with the interior of said tube, a cover hinged to said structure at the end of the latter remote from said tube, a flanged cap secured to said tube at the other end of the latter and having therein an aperture opening into said tube, said cap having screw-thread formations in the flange thereof, and a hollow container having an externally screw-threaded rim threaded into the flange of said cap for receiving ashes from said tube, said receptacle being adapted to be mounted in an automotive vehicle with said ash receiving structure extending through the vehicle internal cowl from below the latter, said tube extending at its end adjacent said ash receiving structure through the vehicle instrument board and at its opposite end through the vehicle dashboard and supporting said container at the outer side of the vehicle dashboard.
2. In combination with an automobile having a dashboard provided with an aperture therein, an instrument board spaced from said dashboard and having an aperture therein in alignment with the aperture in said dashboard, and a cowl extending from the upper edge of said instrument board to the upper edge of said dashboard and having an aperture therein adjacent the aperture in said instrument board, an ash receptacle comprising an elongated tube extending through the apertures in said instrument board and said dashboard, an ash receiving structure projecting from said tube through the aperture in said cowl and communicating interiorly with the interior of said tube, a anged cap secured to said tube at the side of said dashboard remote from said instrument board and at the lower side of said tube, said tube and said cap having registering apertures therein for the passage 0f ashes from said tube through said cap, a hollow container having an open upper and releasably secured to said cap, centrally apertured end walls secured one at each end of said tube, a shaft extending through said end walls and having a crank thereon at the outer side of the end wall adjacent said instrument board, and a helical screw surrounding said shaft and extending longitudinally of said tube for moving ashes from said receiving structure to said container upon rotation of said shaft by said crank.
