'7 Claims.

The present invention relates to `an attachment in the form of a clip which is adapted to be applied detachably to .certain types of carrying containers or cases.

A primary object of the invention is to provide a new and novel clip member which may be applied or secured detachably toa part of a suitable type of case or container so that the same may be rendered capable of being suspended from a belt of a person by an intermediately disposed strap or connecting element.

lAnother object of the invention is to provide a new and novel metal clip having a pair of integral straps struck out from the body to provide loops through which a suitably formed strip may be inserted to secure said clip to a suitably constructed container or-carrying case.

A further object of the invention Vis to provide a clip -having means whereby the clip may be located or secured to a suitably constructed container or case.

Numerous other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the progress of the following specication.

The accompanying drawing illustrates a selected embodiment of the present invention and the views therein are as follows:

The particular embodiment of the invention herein disclosed for the purpose of illustrating the invention comprises a clip l `embodying a substantially triangular plate or body part f2, and a rectangular plate or part t, which are integrally connected together at their lower ends 'by means of a curved integral end plate ffl. The triangular plate 2 comprises a curved top edge `5 from which opposed side edges t, .l slope downwardly and outwardly. The rectangular lplate partt has a flat top edge B and a pair of side edges d and `i l) which are parallel to each other. The side edges 9 'and It are spaced apart from each other at a distance which is less than the length of the base of the triangular plate 2, as Yclearly shown in Fig. l.

The rectangular plate 3 has .a pair vof spaced parallel integral straps ll, t2, which are struck out from the `plate 3 and extend routwardly from the plate 3.

These straps `are vvjoinedv integrally 2 at their ends to this plate. The straps l l, i2 vare adapted to receive a narrow strip I3, which is preferably formed of a spr-ingy material, such as spring steel or the like. This springy strip I3 is bent transversely at its center so that the strap will assume the shape of a flattened V.. .A small protuberance I4 is preferably formed in the center of the strap I3 and is receivable in a small opening or hole I5 formed in the plate .3 at a point midway between the straps Il and l2.

The triangular plate 2 is preferably provided with a circular opening I'B near its apex. The edge of the opening I6 may be reinforced with a circular ring-like Yrib I1 which completely surrounds the opening. The plate 2 may be strengthened .at its side edges 6 and 'I vby `the provision of a pair of ribs I8 and I9 which are adjacent .these edges and which extend downwardly from the circular rib l l. The ribs l1, I8 and I9 are preferably integral with the plate 2 and may be formed by stamping, or in any other suitable manner.

The clip l may be used with any suitably constructed container'or carrying case, but is described herein as being particularly adaptable and suitable for use with cases or containers 20 for carrying slide rules of the type employed by engineers, mathematicians, designers and the like.

The slide rule case or container 29 is conventionally constructed in the form of an elongated rectangular box. The container 2b may have tWo relatively narrow opposed side walls 2I and 22, which are connected integrally to a rearward wall 23 and a forward wall 2li. A bottom wall 25 connects the said walls and closes the bottom. A transversely disposed strap 25, which may be formed of leather, is fastened at its ends to the forward wall 24 vnear the upper end of the container 2o by means o1" two rivets 21, 2.

`The container 2B is provided with an opening i 28 at its top end, which is adapted to be closed by-a cover lor ap 29. The cover or ilap 29 has a short downturned extension 3@ which Tis secured to the rearward wall -23 in any suitable manner, such as by rivets 3|. The ap 23 has any extension 32 in the form of a tongue, which may be inserted between the back rof the strap 26 and the front of the forward wall 24 of the c'ontainer,' as indicated at '33, Fig. 4, so that the opening 28 at the top of the container may be properly covered.

The clip I may be applied to the container v2l] by rst inserting the rectangular plate 3 upwardly between the rearward ap extension 3Q :and 'the rearward wall 23, and between the rivets 3 I.. The springy strip I`3 is then forced through the straps ll and I2 until the protuberance I4 on the strip I3 engages the hole I5 in the plate 3. The strip I3 will thereby be prevented from being forced out of the straps II and I2 under normal conditions because the springy nature of the strip E3 will cause the locking protuberance I4 to be forced tightly into the hole or keeper I5. The strip IS, after being positioned in the straps II, l2, prevents the clip member I from being disengaged from the container 20, since the lower edge 34 of the strip I3 will abut against the rivets 3| should there be any tendency of the clip member I moving downwardly or from coming out of engagement with the flap extension 30.

After the clip I has been fastened to the container 20 in the manner described, the container 29 may be suspended from an individuals belt 35, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A leather strap 38, having a snap clip 3'! at one end, is looped around the belt 35 and the ends of the strap 36 are fastened together by means of a snap fastener 38. The snap clip 31 has a springy strip 48 which may be depressed so that the snap clip 3l engages the opening I6 in the triangular plate 2.

The clip I may be detached from the container 20 by applying a force against either of the two outer ends lil and 52 of the strip I3. This action will cause the protuberance I4 on the strip I3 to become disengaged from the hole or keeper I5, thereby allowing the strip I3 to be removed easily from engagement with the straps II and I2 and the clip I, by merely grasping the end of the strip I3 and pulling it outwardly.

The invention provides a positively operating appliance in the form of a clip which may be applied to, and detached readily from, a case or container for easy carrying. The clip is simple and durable in construction and may be readily and economically manufactured. The parts constituting the clip are adapted to be stamped from metal and are easily and quickly assembled. The device may be sold as a separate unit or it may comprise a part applied to a carrying case.

While the present invention is particularly adapt-ed to be used with slide rule containers, it L.

is to be understood that the device may be used in connection with any container or case capablo of being fastened to the clip I by the means heretofore described.

Changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacricing any of its advantages and the right is hereby reserved to make al1 such changes as fall fairly within the scope of the following claims.

The invention is hereby claimed as follows:

1. A clip for attachment to a carrying case, comprising a back member, a front member parallel with the back member, spaced therefrom and integrally united therewith along the meeting edges of said members, one of said members having lugs struck therefrom in a plane oilset from the member to dene a space between the lugs and thesaid member, and a resilient member receivable in said space, behind the lugs.

2. A clip for attachment to a carrying case, comprising a back member, a front member parallel with the back member, spaced therefrom and integrally united therewith along the meeting edges of said members, one of said members having lugs struck therefrom in a plane offset from the member to define a space between the lugs and the said member, and a resilient member receivable in said space, behind the lugs, said resilient member having a protuberance on a face thereof and receivable in a space formed in the member having the lugs.

3. A clip for attachment to a carrying case. comprising a back member, a front member parallel with the back member, spaced therefrom and integrally united therewith along the meeting edges of said members, one of said members having lugs struck therefrom in a plane offset from the member to denne a space between the lugs and the said member, and a resilient member receivable in said space, behind the lugs, said resilient member having a protuberance on a face thereof and receivable in a cavity formed in the member having the lugs, said resilient member also being bowed transversely to create a pressure against the lugs and the face of the member having the lugs.

A clip for attachment to a carrying case, comprising a back member, a front member parallel with the back member, spaced therefrom and integrally united therewith along the meeting edges of said members, one of said members having lugs struck therefrom in a plane offset from the member to define a space between the lugs and the said member, a resilient member receivable in said space, behind the lugs, said resilient member having a protuberance on a face thereof and receivable in a cavity formed in the member having the lugs, said resilient member also being bowed transversely to normally urge engagement of said protuberance in said cavity.

In combination, a container, a cover closure secured to one side of the container, said cover closure extending a predetermined distance below the top of the container and secured to the container by spaced securing means whereby a space is provided beneath the cover, below an edge of the container and between the securing means, a U-shaped clip having one leg arranged in said space between a part of the closure and a wall of the container and between the securing means, and a second leg extending from the clip in position projecting exteriorly of the closure for attachment as on a carrying belt.

6. In combination, a container, a cover closure secured to one side of the container, said cover closure extending a predetermined distance below the top of the container and secured to the container by spaced securing means whereby a space is provided beneath the cover, below an edge of the container and between the securing means; a U-shaped clip having one leg arranged in said space between a part of the closure and a Wall of the container and between the securing means, and locking means engageable with a part of the clip to prevent the clip from being accidentally removed from the container, said clip having a second leg extending exteriorly of the closure in position for attachment as on a carrying belt.
