Application September 13, 1947, SerialNo. 773,747
v The present invention relates so-handbags, and more particularly to the type of handbag, used to. carry diapers, bottles, and other articles requiredfor the'care of an infant while traveling or away from. home,
The. principal object of the invention: is to provide a new and useful handbag. having separate moisture-proof "compartments, one: of which is adapted to receive fresh diapers or other clothing, another being for damp or soiled di-apers, and still others. being provided to hold bottles or other equipment. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a handbag having: a plurality of compartments, each of. which is accessible from the outside independently of the others, through separate slide fastener closures of the type known popularly as zippers.
Av further object of the invention isto provide a handbag having separate compartments. for fresh and soiled diapers, and still other compartments at the ends of the bag for holding bottles in an upright position, said bottle-holding com,- partments being accessible from the outside of thebag through slide fasteners'in the ends there'- ofwit'hout opening the diaper-holding compartmentsof the: bag. Such a. feature is particularly advantageous when traveling in public conveyances or when in congested. public areas, since it eliminates the need, for exposing the contents of the bag, and makes it possible to get at the bottle without searching throughthe interior of the bag. In addition to the convenience mentioned, such segregation of the bottles from the other contents of the bag is desirable because it prevents contamination of the nipples by soiled diapers, and provides positive assurance that the nipples will remain sterile until used.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon consideration of the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a handbag embodying the principles of the invention, the slide fasteners being shown in the partially opened condition to reveal a bottle in one of the end compartments;
Figure 2 isan enlarged tranverse vertical section through the same, taken along the line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, taken at 3-3 in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional 1 Claim.- (Cl. 150-34l view, takenthrough the top portion. of the handand stitched together to form sides i3 and i4, a
fiat bottom 95, and ends [6, The: top of the ba is formed by the: inwardly turned top edges of the side panels #3 and I4, which are stitched at 2!) to the outer tapes 2| and: 22, respectively, of two laterally spaced ,zip-pers 23 and 2s. The zippers 23 and 24 are completed. by athird tape 55 disposed between the tapes 2i and Z2, and attached to the free edges of the three tapes are teeth 26: which are; adapted to be interlocked by means of slides 30, in a: manner well know -in the art.
The inside: of the bag is lined with a moistureprocf lining 31,. preferably of plastic sheeting, which is secured at its outer top edges by the stitching 20. A. partition 32' divides the interior of the bagtinto" two separate compartments Hand 34, one of which is for the purpose of holding clean diapers: or clothing, and the other being for the purpose of receiving damp or soiled articles'. The: partition 32 is preferably formed by two panels 35 and 35 of the moisture-proof plastic sheeting, said panels being sewed together and to the lining 3| at 40, along the bottom. of the bag, and being stitched at 4| to the tape 25 along the center line thereof. The two panels 35, 35 enclose a compartment 42 which may be used to hold cosmetics and other articles usually carried in a personal handbag. The compartment 62 is reached through a longitudinally extending opening in panel 35, having a zipper 43 along the edges thereof. A rectangular strip 41 of cardboard or other composition is secured in the bottom of the bag between the liner 3| and portion 15, to stiffen the bottom, of the bag and hold it to shape,
The ends I 5 of the bag are formed with, vertically extending openings 44 having zinpers" 45 along the edges thereof, whereby the openings can be closed. Attached to both sides of each of the openings 44 along the inside edges thereof, and to the topand bottom corners of the ba are sections 46 of plastic sheeting forming pockets or com artments 50 which are adapted to receive nursing bottles 5|, and hold the same erect.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the handbag Ill provides separate, moisture-proof 3 compartments 33 and 34 for holding clean dry articles in one of them, and damp or soiled articles in the other. Each of the compartments 33, 34 is accessible from the outside through its own zipper closure 23 or 24 in the top of the bag, making it possible to get into either compartment without exposing the contents of the other. The inside compartment 42 provides a receptacle for cosmetics or other personal effects of the mother, and eliminates the need fora separate handbag to carry the same. The two bottle pockets 50 in the ends of the bag provide convenient receptacles for holding nursing bottles in erect position, said bottles being segregated from the other articles in the bag so that the nipples thereof cannot become contaminated.
The separate zippers 45 for each of the bottle compartments make it possible to get at either of the bottles without opening the diaper compartments 33 and 34, which is a particularly convenient feature when it becomes necessary to remove or replace a. bottle in congested public areas, or where the light is poor.
In addition to the many advantages mentioned above, the handbag Ill is singularly well adapted for use as a beach bag for carryin towels, bathing suits, bottles of lotion, and the like. Here again, the moisture-proof lining of the bag permits damp and dry articles to be segregated from one another, while bottles of sun tan lotion are carried in upright position in the bottle compartments 5D and are conveniently accessible through the zipper closures 45. Cosmetics, cigarettes, currency, and the like can all be carried in the inner compartment 42 without being dampened by wet bathing suits and towels in the compartments 33 and 34.
While I have shown and described in considerable detail what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be' understood that such details are merely illustrative, and that various changes may be made in the shape and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A handbag for carrying clean and soiled infants diapers and nursing bottles, comprising a rectangular body having horizontal top and bottom edges, and vertical sides and ends, said top along opposite edges of each of said openings,
the two companionate rows of teeth along the side of each of said openings being adapted,to intermesh with one another to close the opening,
' slide means associated with each of said pairs of intermeshing rows of teeth, said slide means being selectively operable from the outside of the Sandbag to open either one of said compartments without opening the other, each of said ends of said bod having a vertically extending opening formed therein, intermeshing slide fastener teeth attached to the material along both edges of each of said end openings, whereby the openings can be closed, waterproof plastic sheeting attached to the inside of said handbag body along the inside edges of said end openings, said plastic sheeting formin pockets within the interior of said body in which nursing bottles can be. carried entirely separate from said diaper compartments and protected from contamination, and a slide for operating each of said end slide fasteners from the outside of the bag to provide access to either of said bottle pockets without opening'said diaper compartments.
