Description

P. LEAF ELEANS FOB AQJUS'I'ING THE LENGTH OF TROUSERS WITH CUFFS Filed April 2 FIG-2- FIG. I.
PHILIP LEAF, mmvrox.
M o n A m H Falter-aired @ct. 39, 1950 MEANS FOR ADJUSTING THE LENGTH OF TROUSERS WITH CUFFS Philip Leaf, Jamaica, N. Y.
Application April 2, 1942, Serial No. 738,878 Claims. (01. 2- 232) This invention relates to trousers, and has for its main object to provide novel improved means for lengthening or shortening the legs of trousers.
Another object of my invention is to provide means, as indicated hereinbefore, which will not require an cutting, sewing, shaping or forming cuffs separatel as is needed in such cases at present.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide means whereby trousers legs may be adjusted within wide limits and to any length as desired, for a great number of possible changes.
Still other objects of this invention will be partly apparent as the specification proceeds or partly pointed out therein, and, among others, I may mention: to provide means of the character described, which will be simple to use and apply, inexpensive. and adapted to mass manufacturing, while. at the same time, will be applicable t existing trousers which were originall made prior to my invention.
In the drawings, forming a part of this speciilcation, and accompanying the same:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a pair of pants, the lower portions of its legs being turned inside out to show a preferred embodiment of my de ice applied to them. The left-hand leg showing my device in its original position (as seen in the figure) and the right-hand leg showing one step in the method of using it;
Fig. 2. again, is a front view of a pair of trousers, the left side of the figure showing a further advanced step. The right side showing the final appearance of the pants leg which has been adjusted and a cuff formed on it by my invention;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of said preferred embodiment of my invention; and
Figs. 4 and 5 are fragmentary horizontal and vertical sectional views, respectively, of the de\.ce shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, by characters of reference, the numeral indicates a pair of pants in general, on the lower portions of the inside thereof of each leg of which is arranged the said preferred embodiment of my invention generally indicated by the numeral 2| and being composed 01. two members 22 and 23.
The first member 22 is formed by a base 24 which is a piece of flexible sheet material of any appropriate character preferably textile. A plurality of transverse strips or tapes of material 25 are secured on the base of carrier sheet 24 as by the stitching 28 at their ends. A plurality of cross stitches 21 are also arranged in each strip or tape 25 whereby loops 2B are formed. by said strips.
The carrier sheet 24 with loop forming strips 25 will be secured on the inside of the trousers leg 29 to a. desired distance above the bottom edge 30 thereof. 1
It will be understood that in Figs. 1 and 3 the lower portion oi. the respective leg of the trousers is turned upwardly so that the lower edge 30 is shown there at the upper end of the upturned portion. This showing was chosen to facilitate the showing of my invention and de-- vice and the applications of the method of us- 111g a.
The securing of the base sheet 24 on the inside of the trousers preferably will be executed in the following manner and as it is well-known. The trouser legs always have two seams at the two sides, one of which is shown in the fragmentary Figs. 3 and 4 as indicated at 3! and from the same on the inside project the usual flaps.
32 and the respective longitudinal margin of ,the base sheet 24 will be sewed on the respective flap as indicated at 33.
After this the sheet 24 is placed across the width of the trousers leg secured at its otherside at the other seam and the like and two such base or carrier strips or sheets 24 will be used one on each half of the trousers leg so as to fully encircle the same. as will be understood and as indicated in a preliminary manner in Fig. 4.
I also provide two bottom strips of material 34 which may be secured at or adjacent to the'bot--'- tom edge 30 of the trousers leg on 'the flaps 32 as by the end stitching 35a. It will be seen that in this manner both the-carrier sheet 24 and the bottom strip 34 may be secured on the inside of the trousers leg in an invisible manner, no partthereof being shown on the outside or outer right side of the trousers.
Said base strip 34 may carry a plurality of normally .upwardly pointing tabs 35 which will: be used as hook elements to secure the upwardly.
folded end of the trousers into one of the loop forming strips 25 as will be more fully described.
sold they are finished and adjusted to the length of the customer's legs. This entails considerable labor, expert knowledge, possibly the use of machinery and tools and, time and experience so that a smaller Storekeeper may lose considerable sales because customers are impatient to wait for these alterations for which he has to send out the trousers and also because of the added expense and on account of these drawbacks and. annoyances,
In many other cases people buy pants and want to finish it at a desired length themselves easily and conveniently, and they also desire to be able to adJust the length later on as needed particularly to lengthen the pants. This is a very essential requirement with growing boys where, at present, the parents very often have to buy new pants frequently as the boys grow, while the old ones are hardly used.
According to my invention, and referring to the embodiment thereof described hereinbefore, the indicated elements will be provided on the pants of unfinished and normally excessive length when being manufactured. When a pair of pants is sold first the lower ends of the legs will be turned inside out, as indicated on the left side of Fig. l whereupon the bottom portion of the leg of the pants will be folded reversely to a desired extent until the hook tabs 35 at its bottom edge may reach a desired loop strip 25, whereupon the respectiv'etabs 35 will be hooked into the registering loops 28 as generally indicated in the right side of Fig. 1. The reverse turning of the bottom portion of the pants here being imagined as to be made for hooking the tabs 35 into the loops of the second-strip 25a counting from the bottom edge 21.41 of'the carrier sheet 24.
After such pre-determined doubling of the bottom part of the pants and hooking and securing the same into a selected row of loops, the lower portion of the pants will be turned back to the usual position, right side out, which is indicated on the left side of Fig. 2 at 3B.
The pants may be used in this form when it is desired without any cuff and obviously they are adjusted to a desired length and when they are pressed the insertion and use of my invention will not appearat all, since the same may be made of light material and will not show on the outside or outer view of the finished pants. This I has been proven by numberless experiments and use of the invention.
" If it is desired to finish the pants with a cull the form shown on the left side of Fig. 2 is not the final one yet, but the lower part of this, as finished, will again be turned doubled upwardly as on theline' 31 shown in an imaginary manner by dots and dashes and'producing the final form shown on the right side of Fig. 2 and having a cufl -38 at the bottom of the trousers leg.
When the lower portion of the trousers leg ad- Justed in the manner described. is pressed fiat, the trousers will appear as any othernormal' pair of trousers with cufisof the'usual' appearance.
It may happen that when the described preferred embodiment of my device is inserted into a trousers leg the foot of the wearer may be caught by the top edge 24b of the carrier sheet 24 and to prevent this, the top margin of the sheet may be secured to the material of the trousers by any appropriate means. One method for this purpose may consist of applying a row 39 of socalled invisible stitches along said upper edge as indicated in Fig. 3, said stitches not showing on the outside of the pants.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that changes and variations may be resorted to in the elements, construction and operation of my invention, and I reserve my rights to such changes and variations as are within the spirit of this specification, and the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim as new and want to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A device to adjust the length of trousers legs, comprising two sheets of flexible material secured by their marginal portions on the inside of a trousers leg, on the flaps of its seams, so as to be invisible from the outer right side, a plurality of transverse strips of material on each of said sheets secured thereto at their ends, a plurality of spaced apart cross stitches on said strips forming loops therein, two strips of material adjacent to the bottom edge of the trousers leg on the inside thereof one for each of said sheets of flexible material secured at their ends on said flaps of the seams invisible from the right side of the trousers, a plurality of hook devices on said strips of material at the bottom edge adapted to engage respective loops in selected transverse strips of material on said sheets.
2. In a device to adjust trousers to various pre determined lengths, in combination, a first securing means arranged adjacent to the bottom on the inside of the trousers leg, a plurality of upper securing means arranged in rows at various distanccs from the bottom edge of the trousers leg,
said first securing means being adapted to register and cooperate with respective rows of said second upper securing means, and a separate piece of flexible sheet material secured on the inside of the trousers leg carrying said plurality of upper securing means.
3. In a device, as set forth in claim 2, said first securing means being arranged on a strip of material, and means to secure said strip of material on the inside of the trousers leg.
4. In a device, as set forth in claim 3, said flexible sheet of material for the upper securing means and said strip of material for the lower securing means being secured on the trousers leg by means 7 invisible from the outside.
