1' Claim. 1 This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in shoes, more specifically, shoes for use by infants, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a shoe of this character which may be quickly and easily unfolded so to speak, for purposes of cleaning, laundering, or the like. This object is achieved by the provision of a shoe formed in its entirety from foldable material and including a sole and a shoe upper, the latter assuming the form of a plurality of foldable or bendable panels which may be arranged into a proper, predetermined configuration and suitably secured together so as to enable the shoe to be worn, but which may be unfolded with equal expediency for laundering or cleaning purposes.

An important feature of the invention resides in the particular means employed for separably attaching the components of the shoe upper together.

Important advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in its highly pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is aperspective view of the invention in its assembled form;

Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the invention in its developed or unfolded form; and

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 44 in Figure 3.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a shoe designated generally by the reference character H], the same being formed in its entirety from suitable foldable material such as soft leather, rubber, or the like, and embodying in its construction a sole I 2 and what may be referred to as a heel panel M which is provided at the rear end or edge of the sole I2, as is best shown in Figure 3.

It is to be noted that side portions of the panel l4 constitute what may be called a pair of lateral wings IS, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.

A pair of shank panels 18 are provided at opposite longitudinal edges of the sole l2, while a pair of toe panels 20 are similarly secured to the sole, forwardly of the shank panels.

Finally, a plug panel 22 is provided at the front end or edge of the sole 12, this plug panel including a pair of transversely spaced tongues 24.

The various panels [4, I8, 20 and 22, aswell as the sole I2 are provided. with reinforced marginal edges as typified by the reference character 26, which marginal edges, as is best shown in Figure 4, may simply assume the form of strips of material which are doubled upon and under the marginal edge portions of the panel or sole, as the case may be, and are secured in position by ornamental lines of stitching 28.

The invention in its developed or unfolded form is illustrated in the accompanyin Figure 3, and when it is desired to assemble the shoe, the heel panel I 4 is first angulated to an upstanding position wherein the wings I 5 thereof extend forwardly at the sides of the sole I2, as shown in Figure 1. Thereupon, the shank panels l8 are angulated upwardly into a superimposed or overlapping relation on the wings I6, and it is to be noted that the wings It are provided with a pair of suitable fasteners, such as for example, conventional buttons 30 which are removably receivable in appropriate butt'onholes 32 with which the shank panels 18 are provided.

Similarly, one of the toe panels 20 is provided with a further button or fastener 34 which is engageable with an aperture 36 provided in the remaining toe panel, whereby the two toe panels may be releasably connected together, and the plug panel 22 may then be upturned, substantially as shown in Figure 1. It is to be noted that the plug panel 22 is formed with an aperture or buttonhole 38 which is registrable with the aforementioned buttonhole 36 in one of the toe panels 20, and the tongues 24 of the plug panel 22 are also provided with a pair of buttonholes or apertures 40 which are registrable with the aforementioned buttonholes or apertures 32 in the shank panels 18. The plug panel 22, of course,

overlaps the toe panels 28 While the tongues 24 overlap the shank panels l8, the buttonholes 38, 40 receiving the aforementioned fasteners or buttons 34, 30, respectively, whereby the assembled shoe is retained in shape as illustrated in Figure 1. In this position the shoe is, of course, adapted for wear, but by simply disengaging the buttons or fasteners 30 from the apertures 32, 4! and similarly disengaging the button 34 from the apertures 36, 38, the entire shoe may be unfold- 1 scription thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, whatis claimed as new is:

A shoe formed from foldable material and comprising a soleQa heel panel extending pwardly from said sole and provided at the opposite sides thereof with a pair of forwardly extending wings, a pair of fastening elements provided at the outer surfaces of the respective wings, a pair of shank panels extending upwardly from opposite side edges of said sole and having upper portions thereof superposed on the outer surfaces of said wings and provided with openings to receive said fastening elements, a pair of -toe panels extending ed as shown in Figure 3, for cleaning or launupwardly and inwardly from opposite side edges of the sole and having overlapped upper portions, an additional fastening element connecting the overlapped portions of said toe panels together, and a plug panel extending upwardly and rearwardly from said sole and provided at its rear end with a pair of transversely spaced outwardly sloping tongues, an intermediate portion of said plug panel being superposed on the overlapped portions of said toe panels and provided with an opening to receive the last mentioned fastening element, said tongues being superposed on the outer surfaces of the respective shank panels and being provided with additional openings to reeeive the two first mentioned fastening elements.
