1 This invention relates to apparel shoes, the predominant "obj ectof the invention being to providea shoe which includes improved means forsecuring upper portion-softhe shoeto s'o'le'portio'ri's'thereof;whichshoe, because of its improved construction and arrangement. is of distinctive appearance "and posseses the flexibility required f or'comfor'table'wear; and which may be economicallyfnianufactured "'Figjl is a perspective of a shoe made in ac- 12 Cl aims. Fig.3 isa' fragmentary vertical section showing anothermodifiedformof the invention;
In the drawing, wherein are 'shown'for purposesofillus'tration, merely, two embodiments of the invention, A'de' 'si'gnates in Fig. 1 the improved a shoe generaIIyJ The-shoe A, as illustrated, is of the" platform type," although, obviously, shoes of other types may 'be'made inaccordance with this preferably, though not necessarily, are pointed at their outer ends, as is indicated at ,fl -in-Figl 2; The vamp 3 of the shoe A is provided with'a plurality of apertures 9 which are located slightly inward of the marginal edge of said vamp,-as is shown't'o goodadvantage in'Figs. 1' and 2, and the upperquarter 2 of saidshoe A' is provided with a' plurality of like apertures It, as is shown in Fig. 1, said-apertures '9 and I0 being-shown in the drawing as being substantially semicircular in shape although,obviously,said-apertures may be of any'other suitable shape. L In assembling the shoe illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6,inclusive, of the drawing, the various'parts oi the shoe having been previously prepared and certain of said 'parts being arranged intheirre;
inv nt'iomandsaid shoe A includes a'platform'l,
anupp'er quarter'2',avamp '3, and an outsole'4. The platform I is provided with a platform cover, or socl{ 'li'riing," 5 which preferably is'ceniented to t e uppe face of the'platform so thatsaid upper face of said platforrn'is 'covered in its entirety by said sock lining; orplatformcover. 5 The' 'm'argin'al v edge portion of the platform cover, for sockf lining, '5 is provided with a" multiplicity o'fislijts' fi'KFigL 2) whiohtermiriate at their inner" ends at the marginaltedge "of the platform 'I,', the platform cove'if'forsock lining, When'in a flat 'co-nditibh',' having a marginal portion which jextendsoutwardlybeyond the marginal edge of n 'm'an'd the 'slitsfi bei'ng formed in this outwardly extended portion of 1 said platform 'coyer, or sock lining. The slits 6 provide themar ginal portion of the platform cover, or socklining; 5 licity ofi'contiguous tongues l which lated positions; every second tongue 1 of the platform cover, or sock lining-fi, is drawn down tight about the edge of the platform I and is-turned inwardly beneath said platform, thetongues referred to, which are designated: secondarily by the referencecharacter 1a in the drawings, being cemented to the bottom'face-of the platform. The tongues of the platform coveror sock lining 5 that are located 'betwe'en'adjacent pairs ofthe tongues. 1a; and which aresecondarily designated by'the reference'character lb, are passed through appropriate apertures 9 of the vamp 3 and the upper quarter! andare drawn down tight about the'edge of the'platform I-andare turned inwardly "beneath said platform; said inwardly turned portions ofsaid tongues 1b being-also cemented to the bottom face of the platform E. It is time noted'that the lower edges of the vamp 3 and the upper quarter 2 of the shoe A are sub,- stantially flush with the bottom face of the plat? form Land that portions of said vamp and upper quarter, which are located between the lower edges thereof and the apertures 9and bare interposed between thedownturned portions of said tongues lb and the edge ofthe platform I. -When the vamp 3 and upper quarter 2 have .been- "attached to the platform l-'ofv the shoe-A in the manner described above, the outsoleiof theshoe is cemented to the bottom face of the platform, and the heel (not shown) issecured in place," the inturned portions of the tongues =la-and lb being interposed between the upper faceof the outsole and the bottom face of the platform.
A shoe made in accordance with this invention, as described above, is of distinctive and orna mental appearance, and has the desired and required flexibility which make for comfortable wear. This latter property of theimproved shoe results largely from the fact that the-lower;edge
portions of the Vamp 3 and upper quarter do not underlap the platform I of the shoe, as is usually the case, but, instead, the lower edges of said vamp and upper quarter are substantially flush with the bottom face of the platform, as referred to above, and as is shown to good advantage in F gs. 1, 5, and 6.
In Fig. 7 a modified form of the invention is shown which illustrates the present invention as embodied in a sandal. In this form of the invention the platform ll of the sandal is provided with a, platform cover, or sock lining, l2 which is cemented to the top face of the platform and extends throughout the entire area of said top face of said platform. The platform cover, or sock lining, I2 is provided with tongues 13 of proper widths which pass through openings is between strap-like elements l5 of the vamp it of the sandal and are drawn down tight about the edge of the platform and are turned inwardly beneath, and are cemented to the bottom face of the platform.
Fig. 7 illustrates only the forward portion of a sandal made in accordance with this invention, but it is obvious that an upper quarter (not shown) would be attached to the platform H in the same manner that the vamp Iii is attached to said platform. Also, the sandal shown in Fig. '7 would include an outsole (not shown) which would be cemented to the bottom face of the platform I l with the inturned portions of the tongues l3 interposed between the top face of the outsole and the bottom face of the platform, Obviously, portions of the vamp l6 are embraced by the downturned portions of the tongues I3 so that said vamp portions are interposed between said downturned tongue portions and the edge of the platform, and tongues l1 formed on the platform cover, or sock lining, [2 at the toe of the sandal are drawn down tight and are cemented to the bottom face of the platform to provide the sandal with an open toe portion. If desired, the rearmost strap-like portions l5a of the vamp it of the sandal, shown in Fig. '7, may be provided with extensions l5b which are turned under the bottom face of the platform II and are cemented thereto.
In Fig. 8 is shown a modified form of the invention in accordance with which lower edge portions of an upper portion I8 of the shoe, that is the vamp or the upper quarter, are turned under the platform l5 slightly, as is shown at I80. in Fig. 8, said turned under marginal extensions of said upper portion of the shoe being cemented, or otherwise secured to the platform. By so turning under marginal portions of the shoe upper a more finished appearance is given to the shoe at the lower edges of the vamp and the upper quarter thereof without materially interfering with the flexibility of the shoe.
