Description

E. WOODMAN April 29, 1947.
GARMENT Filed Jari. 27, 1944 I IN V EN TOR. firm/a Mad/21a)? Patented Apr. 29, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Edward Woodman, Seattle, Wash.
Application January 27, 1944, Serial No. 519,956
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a garment of loin cloth type that is particularly adapted to be worn as an under-garment.
The objects of this invention are to provide a garment of this type that is very simple and inexpensive, that can be made from a minimum amount of material without waste of said material in cutting, that isv comfortable and convenient to wear, that is easy to put on and take off, that easy to launder, that occupies very little space when packed and that is equally well suited for use by men, women and children when made in proper sizes.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying. drawing.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a garment made in accordance with this invention showing the same opened out into a flat position and showing portions broken away to reveal certain elastic members disposed within the hemmed parts of the garment.
Fig. 2 i a view similar to Fig. 1 showing waist strap and fastener means of modified form and showing a different arrangement of elastic members.
Like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the drawing.
The garment comprises a flat rectangular garment member formed of any suitable kind of cloth and preferably hemmed along both sides and across both ends.
Two waist straps 6, usually of the same cloth as the garment, are provided. Each waist strap 6 has one end portion sewed or otherwise fixedly secured to a corner portion 3 of the garment member 5 at one end portion of said garment member.
Preferably each waist strap 6 is made by taking a strip of cloth about one and one-half inches wide, folding this strip along a medial line to bring the two edges thereof together in overlapped relation to provide a two ply strip about three quarters of an inch wide, stitching this strip along the two overlapping edges, then doubling this two ply strip midway of its length to form a bight 4 at the outer end portion of the strip and to cause the two portions of the strip to lie alongside of each other in a common plane with their edges close together and sewing or otherwise securing the two end portions of the strip to the garment at the corners 3 of the garment body 5. The adjacent edges of the two halves of each strip are then secured together at intervals by cross stitching 8 to form preferably two or more button holes I. This provides an economical and easy way to form a plurality of button holes and the presence of several button holes in each strap makes the waist portion of the garment quickly and easily adjustable to the user. Also the bight portion t forms a very durable and long lasting part in the outermost button hole 1.
A button 9 is provided near each corner of the garment member 5 at the end remote from the one to which the waist straps are connected. Also, if desired, other buttons 9 may be provided inwardly from the buttons 9 to cooperate in making the waist portion of the garment ad- J'ustable, to provide a more secure fastening when double buttoning is used and to take care of the loose ends of the waist straps 6 when the second button holes in these straps are used.
Obviously metal snap fasteners Ill-4&3, as indicated in Fig, 2, may be used in place of the buttons and button holes shown in Fig. 1. The waist straps 6 shown in Fig. 2 are plane fiat strips of cloth instead of being narrower pieces doubled as shown in Fig. 1.
Preferably a piece of elastic material H is provided in the end portion of the garment 5 between the two waist straps 6, as shown in Fig. 1, or two pieces 12 of such elastic material are provided in the respective waist straps 6, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide a snug and yielding fit. Obviously one of the elastic members I l and two of the elastic members l2 may be provided in the same garment if desired.
Also I provide an elastic member M in each side of the garment member 5 as a preferred form of construction. These elastic members M are positioned so that they will be in what is normally the front portion of the garment when the garment is in use. When thus positioned these elastic members l4 gather or pouch the garment member 5 at the front, thus making the garment more comfortable and more convenient, especially for the accommodation of men. The elastic members It may be omitted from garments intended for women.
The elastic members may be sewed within the seamed portion of the garment in each instance. The garment will be somewhat drawn or gathered at the location of these elastic members as indicated by shading in the drawing.
In the use of this garment the end portion of the garment member 5 to which the waist straps are secured is usually positioned at the back of the user, the garment member 5 extends between 3 the legs and the waist straps are drawn around the waist and made fast to the buttons 99 or snap fasteners Ill.
The garment is easy to put on and take ofi, is very comfortable to wear and is plane and flat thus making it cheap and easy to manufacture and very easy to launder.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention but it will be understood that changes in this garment may be made within the scope and spirit of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A garment of the class described comprising a flat rectangular cloth garment member; two waist straps secured to said garment member adjacent one end portion thereof adapted to extend sidewise therefrom when the garment is in use, each of said waist straps being formed of a looped piece of cloth having its two ends sewed to the garment member and having a bight portion at its outer extremity and having cross stitching at a plurality of intervals to form between the two parts of said piece of cloth a plurality of button holes; and buttons on the other end portion of said garment member adapted for engagement within the button holes of said waist straps.
2. An undergarment for the lower portion of the body comprising a substantially plain flat rectangular fabric garment of substantially greater length than width having a back portion and a front portion adjacent its respective ends and having a medially disposed crotch portion between the back and front portions; hems provided in the four edge portions of said garment member; two waist straps secured to the respective corners of said back portion and extending sidewise therefrom; fastening means carried by said waist straps; other fastening means carried by the front portion of said garment member adjacent the end thereof and releasably engagemember.
' tions of said front garment portion in a gathered condition to thereby provide fullness and some elasticity in said front portion of said garment EDWARD WOODMAN.
