J. H. CLYDE.
Pantaloons. No. 238,574. Patented March 8,1881.
INVENTOR:

WITNESSES Nrrno STATES ATENT FFICE.
JOSEPH H. CLYDE, OF ATLANTIC, IOWA.
PANTALOONS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 238,574, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed May 31, 1860. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. CLYDE, of Atlantic, in the county of Cass and State of Iowa, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Pantaloons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent the protrusion in front and wrinkling in rear in the knee portions of the legs of pantaloons, and also the uneven wearing of the seat portion.
To this end the invention consists in a novel construction and improved form of pattern, whereby provision is made for reversing the pantaloons, so that the wear will come alternately on the front and rear portions. The invention is also applicable to overalls.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a mode of carrying out my invention.
Figures 1 and 2 are views of the twolegs of a pair of pantaloons made according to my improvement, and Fig. 3 shows the same with their inside seams sewed up and the two legs ready to be sewed together. Fig. 4. is a front View, and Fig. 5 a rear view, of the pants when ready for wear; and Fig. 6 is a view of one of the legs at the side seam, to show the arrangement of the pockets.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Each leg is designated by the letter A. The line a 1) represents the fly of the front, and the line 0 (1 represents the shape in which the back of the pants is cut when made in the ordinary way. The two legs A A, Fig. 3, are sewed together from the commencement of one fly, a I), to the commencement of the other fly, and the portion which is to serve as the back is buttoned together, leaving the front fly as in ordinary pantaloons. When the pantaloons are to be reversed the back is unbuttoned to form the front fly, and the former frontis buttoned to form the new back portion.
The pockets are formed of a square piece of cloth sewed on the inner side of the leg, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 6. The line of indicates the opening-for the pocket when worn in one way, and the line 9 h the opening for the pocket when reversed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Rex'ersible pantaloons having each leg provided with two fly portions, whereby one fly may be buttoned over another to form the back, while the other flies form the front of the garment, and may be used alternately when the garment is. reversed, substantially as herein described.
2. In reversible pantaloons having each leg provided with two fly portions, the pocket E, provided with the two openings 0 f and g h, substantially as herein described.
JOSEPH HORNER CLYDE.
