This invention relates to improvements in adjustable mountings for liquid fuel burners of the character employed in open hearth furnaces and the like.
Such burners 'may employ liquid fuel, such as tar, and generally include an elongate` tube or pipe supported externally'of the furnace and extending inwardly to direct the llame thereof upon the bath of meta1. Due to the location of said burners above the working floor and the crude support thereof from the buckstays of the furnace, they are diillcult to adjust for proper direction in relation to the bath, and their manipulation necessitates. exposure of the workman to excessive heat.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide an adjustable mounting for such burners Said mounting includes a base or frame 3 comprising an angle member extending horizontally between and secured to adjacent buckstays 2, said member havingbearing plates 4ver tically slotted for vertical 'adjustment on `the buckstays, as by means of bolts 5. The upper horizontal leg of the angle member 3 is longitudinally slottedat 6 for a substantial distance between the buckstays for purposes hereinafter described. -Spaced apart sleeve bearings I are secured to the upper face of the frame 3'for slid- `ably and rotatably `supporting' a tubular shaft 8,
having universal movement capable of being easi- V1y and readily adjusted without the difficulties aforesaid.
My invention contemplates a universal mount-v ing accessible to the workman and operable by a simple bar or lever, said mounting also being capable of adequatelyv supporting lthe elongate burner by its relatively short externally projecting portion only.

Referring to the drawings, A designates an open hearth furnace containing a bath of molten metal B. A burner C for the combustion of liquid fuel, such as tar, isdirected inwardly toward the bath B from outside the furnace, said burner usually including an 'elongate tube or pipe, the major portion of which is disposed inside th furnace away from external support. c
My improved mounting for such a burner is generally indicated at D, secured to the buckstays 2 of the furnace; In addition to the rigid support provided thereby, the mounting D is capable of adjustment to move the burner C hori-` zontally and vertically in order to properly ,po-

, The burner carriage includes a slide9 welded to a pair of spaced sleeves I Il slidable on the shaft 8, said slide being in the form of a plate depending from and between said sleeves through the slot 6 in theframel Beneath said upper flange of the frame 3, the slide is provided with a central threaded boss II engaging the threaded terminal of a screw I2 rotatably supported at its other end in a bearing flange I3 secured to the frame 3, said screw extending parallel with the slot 8 in said frame.
The carriage also includes a table I4 fixed to the shaft 8 between the sleeves III thereon, said table being centrally apertured to` receive the threaded stud I5 of a burner support I6 rotatable with said stud on the table, a locking nut I1 being provided to secure. the support to the table. The axis of said stud I5 is disposed at right angles to the axis of the shaft A8. Support I6 is provided with a burner clamp including a lower fixed V-jaw IB and an upperinverted V-jaw I9 ml'ivable in relation to the xed jaw I8 to grip the burner C therebetween so that the latter extends transversely of the support I6.
The movable clamp member-is pivoted atv 20 to the' support I6, and on the opposite side thereof is slotted at 2| to receivea stationary vertical locking post 22 on said support, the latter being said shaft carrying the slotted at 23 in coacting relation with the en- I trance of the post in slot 2|, whereby the jaws may be secured and wedged in gripping 'engagement withA the burner C by the insertion of a tapered key 2l in slot 23 over the adjacent portion For the purpose of further securing the burner C, particularly for `counteracting the weight of cured thereto.
In operation, the frame 3 of burner mounting D is secured to the buckstays 2 of ythe furnace at a suitable elevation with'relation to the burner opening E in the furnace by the slotted plates 4 and bolts.5. The burner C is secured to the carriage by the clamp l8-I 9, and the turnbuckle is adjusted to dispose the burner at the proper inclination in a vertical plane with respect to the bath B, the carriage table I4 pivoting about the horizontal axis of the shaft 8 upon adjusting the turnbuckle.
If it is desired to translate the burner laterallyl in a horizontal direction, for adjustment thereof with relation to the bath B, the operator may rotate the feed screw I2 to translate the entire carriage by sliding movement of the shaft in the bearings 'l on the frame 3. Also, the burner JC maybe adjusted laterally about the pivotal axis of the table I4, upon loosening the.
nut l1 and moving said burner and table upon the stud l5.
Means are provided for conveniently effecting the aforesaid adjustments by the operator, as by means of bars 'or pipes indicated at 3| in Fig. `2,
said means including short pipe sections' or sleeves,v

By insertion of the bars 3| in said pipe sections 32, the operator may stand a suitable distance from the burner mounting while adjusting the latter, whereby he will not be subi ected to the'high temperatures vimmediately adjacent said mounting. It will thus be seen that I have provided an adjustable mounting for burners of the character described,v which mounting has universal adjustment to enable the convenient positioning of the burner sleeves in relation to the bath of molten metal B. Various modifications and changes are contemplated within the scope of the .v following riage also having a table rotatable with saidl shaft,
a burner support rotatable on the table, means for securing the burner to said support, means on the frame foradjustably sliding the carriage andy shaft, adjustable means connecting the slide and burner for rotating said burner withthe carriage and shaft, and means for securing the burner support to the table of said carriage.
2. The combination with a burner adapted to extend inwardly through a furnace opening, of a supporting frame adapted to be disposed transversely of said burner and opening, a burner carriage having a slidable portion and a rotatable portion mounted on the frame, means for clamping the burner transversely of the rotatable portion of the carriage with the outer end of said burner extending beyond said carriage, adjustable means connecting the said outer end of the burner with the, slidable carriage portion for rotating the burner with the rotatable carriage portion, and means carried by the frame and engaging the slidable carriage portion for adjustably sliding the burner` and carriage on said frame in a direction transversely o f said burner.
3. The combination with a burner of the character described, ofa horizontal supporting frame therefor, said frame being longitudinally slotted, a shaft mounted for sliding travel on the frame parallel with the slot therein, said shaft also being rotatable about its longitudinal axis, a burner carriage secured to'v the shaft, a sleeve freely mounted on the shaft on either side of the carriage and a slide extending downwardly from said sleeves through the frame slot, an adjusting screw rotatably mounted inV the frame parallel with said slot and having threaded engagement withl a coacting portion of the slide, said carriage-also having a table rotatable thereon, a burner support rotatable on the table about an axis at anangle to the axis of said shaft, adjustable means securing the burner support against rotation with respect to the table,
a clamp on the burner support for securing the burner transversely thereof with the outer endof said burner extending beyond the carriage, and a turnbuckle connecting said outer end of .the burner with the carriage slide for pivotal adjustment of the carriage and burner about the shaft a shaft mounted for sliding travel on the frameA parallel with the slot therein, said shaft also being rotatable about its longitudinal axis, a burner carriage secured to the shaft, a sleeve freely mounted onthe shaft on either side of the carriage and a slide extending downwardly from said sleeves through the frame slot, an adjusting screw rotatably mounted in the frame parallel with said slot and having threaded engagement with a coacting portion of the slide, said carriage also having a table rotatable thereon, a burner support rotatable on the table about an axis at anangle to the axis of said shaft, adjustable means securing the burner support against rotation with respect to the table, a clamp on the burner suplort for securing the burner transversely thereof with the outerend of said burner extending be# yond the carriage, a turnbuckle connecting Asaid outer end of the burner with the carriage slide for pivotal adjustment of the carriage and burner about the shaft axis, and receiving sockets attached to the screw and to the means securing the burner support against rotation for manipulation thereof by the insertion of a bar therein.
