Description

M. KUHA N DIsPLAY Box April 20; 1943.
Filed April 15, 1941 mur reda
Patented Apr. 29, 1943 UNETED STATES I zrtzes RA'E'EN'E EFICE 2 Claims.
This irivention relates to display boxes, and pertains more particularly to covered boxes of the set-up type which are adapted to be supported at an inclined angle, in opened position, so that the merchandise contained in the box is attractively exhibited to prospective purchasers.
The principal purpose of the invention is to provide a set-up display box equipped with a novel hinge member Which so connects the box body and its cover that it may be disposed flatwise and unobtrusively against the bottom and one end of the covered boX, or folded upon itself to support the box body at an inclined angle, when the cover is removed and swung beneath the opened box.
Another object is to provide a simple and economical hinge member Which may be adhesively applied to any ordinary, rectangular display box without cutting or otherwise mutilating the box or its cover, and without the necessity of employing special fastenings.
A suggested embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it will be understood that the size or shape of the improved display box may be varied to suit particular purposes, without departing from the essence of this invention as set forth in the appended claims. In the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a closed, set-up box equipped with the improved hinge member;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box, showing the cover swung beneath the box body in position to receive and support the body portion at an inclined angle;
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the box in display position; and
Fig. 4 is a bottom vieW of the closed box, partly broken away.
The body H and cover |2 of the improved box are preferably rectangular and may be of any desired size and arrangement, provided the cover telescopes over the top of the box in the usual manner; and the parts may be of cardboard or other suitable sheet material.
The box and its cover are permanently connected by a hinge member preferably consisting of a flat strip of cardboard having hinge lines IS, M- and 25, defining several relatively foldable sections or panels t, ll, l?- and 53. Panel IG is cemented at 2 to the bottom 2! of the box, preferably at one end thereof; and panel IQ is comented at 22 inside the end wall 23 of the box cover. The width of the hinge member as a whoie is substantially the same as that of the Lil box I I; the aggregate length of the panels lt, ll and 18 corresponds to the length of the box; and the length of panel S9 is approximately equal to the height of the box.
Hence, When the box is closed, panels l, ll and I8 lie flatwise against the box bottom, and panel IQ lies against the box end with its upper margin concealed by the cover Wall 23. A hinge member thus disposed is unobtrusive and in no wise detracts from the appearance of the closed box, and it will be apparent that it may be colored or decorated to harmonize or contrast with the color of the box body or its cover.
To open the box and arrange it in display position, the free end of the cover l2 is lifted; the cover is swung endwise to inverted position beneath the box body so that the hinge member folds upon itself at the weakened lines [3, M and I 5 (Fig. 2) and the box body is then inclined so that one end rests within the cover and against the end wall 24 thereof, While the other end of the box is supported in elevated position by the folded hinge member which serves as an easel (Fig. 3).
It Will be observed that the hinge sections 18 and l are of substantially equal length and stand upright against the cover end 23, With the fold M between said J'uxtaposed sections engaging the inside of the inverted cover, whereas the longer panel Il is disposed approximately at right angles to the box bottom. The box is thus firmly braced at both ends, and eifectively resists any casual impacts which might tend to upset or displace it.
It will be apparent that the box may again be closed by reversing the operations. above described; and it will be understood that the cover may be readily opened and closed to permit removal or inspection of its contents Without necessarily placing the box in display position.
I claim:
l. A display box of the character described, comprising a box body, a cover telescoping thereon, and a hinge member interconnecting the box and its cover, the hinge member consisting of a plurality of relatively foldable, substantially rigid sections, one endmost section being attached to the box bottom and the other endmost section being attached to an end wall of the cover, so that the hinge member is disposed against the bottom and one end Wall of the closed box, an intermediate section of said hinge member being foldable upon itself and movable to bracing position to support the box in its display position, with the fold of said intermediate section engaging the inside of the inverted cover and with one end of the box body resting in the inverted cover.
2. A display box of the character described, comprising a box body, a cover telescoping thereon, and a hinge member interconnecting the box and its cover, the hinge member consisting of four relatively foldable, substantially rigid sections, three of Which are disposed flatwise i against the box bottom and the fourth against cover, the intermediate sections folding upon themselves When the cover is moved to display position, so that the box body may be supported at an incline with one end resting within and against an end wall of the inverted cover and i With its other end braced by the foldedrhinge member, the last named endmost section and the adjacent intermediate section being of equal length and said sections being J'uxtaposed When in display position, so that the fold connecting the intermediate sections engages the inside of the inverted cover. i
MAURICE KURHAN.
