Description
Patented Jan. 12, 1943 UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARBAGE RECEPTAOLE Ambrose Caloagno, Portland, Oreg.
Application October 26, 1940, Serial No. 362,999
1 Claim.
This invention relates to garbage receptacles of the general type employing an outer case and an inner receiver wherein the latter is removable from the former.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of pedal operated cover means for garbage receptacles without loss of essential portability for disposal.
A secondary object of this invention is the provision of an inoffensive fixture properly adaptable as an adjunct to the home.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent in the following discourse wherein the significance of the reference numerals in the accompanying drawing, details of construction and operation of a typical receptacle embodying this invention, and the particular advantages thereof are explained.
Figure 1 represents a View of a vertical diametral section of the device taken on the line |l of Figure 3.
Figure 2 represents a vertical diametral section at right angles to that shown in Figure 1 taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a view in elevation of the front of the receptacle.
Figure 4 represents a view in elevation of the back of the receptacle.
An outer case I is formed of a cylindrical shell 2 fitted with a bottom 3 and false-bottom 4. A deflector 5 of tapered annular form is attached at the upper part of the shell 2.
The cover is formed in two ornamental halves 6 and 1 preferably of cast material. These halves 6 and I are hinged at 8 and 9, respectively, to the shell 2. Lateral extensions I and H of the halves 6 and 1 respectively, constitute levers to which the upper extremities of -to symmetrically disposed vertical rods I2 and I3 are respectively pivotally attached.
A foot-lever It of annular form is hinged at l interiorly of the shell 2 and extends around the inside of the shell 2 closely adjacent thereto and below the false-bottom 4. Diametrically opposite the hinge the continuous bar of which the foot-lever i4 is made is conveniently formed with exteriorly extending features It and I! to which a pedal i6 is secured.
Arcuate slots as l9, symmetrically formed and disposed in the shell 2 accommodate two laterally extending studs and 2| towhich the lower extremities of the rods l2 and 13 are pivotally attached respectively.
In detail the cover hales 6 and I are respectively formed with a bead 2| and coping 22 to provide a shed for water.
The rear of the case I is further fitted with a door 23 fitted with a handle 24 and hinges 25 and 26 to provide access to the interior of the case I. Through this door 23, a garbage receiver 2'! is installed within the case I and conveniently removed for emptying.
To dispose of garbage the housewife need not soil her hands nor handle an unwieldy cover, but needs merely to step upon the pedal [8 to open the receptacle. The deflector 5 directs refuse into the garbage receiver. Releasing the pressure of the foot upon the pedal is allows the cover to close by gravity.
The garbage receiver 21 is removed with its contents through the door 23 and replaced when emptied.
It Will be apparent that the case I may be finished in a variety of ways more or less decorative and may endure indefinitely without damage in proper use. The mutilation of the garbage receiver 21, occurring in the course of common use, does not detract from the appearance of the receptacle nor in any wise interfere with the proper closing of the receptacle. Hence the device is conducive to highly sanitary conditions.
Receptacles embodying my invention may be made substantially as desired to preclude the possibility of loss of the cover by high winds or marauding animals. Proper provisions in building plans may be made to securely install the receptacle in concreted pavements or otherwise supply the device as a permanent fixture.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A garbage receptacle comprising, a cylindrical case formed with two diametrally opposed lateral and one front slots near the lower extremity and fitted with a horizontal partition above said slots and a segmented lid each segment of which is hinged upon the upper rim above said lateral slots, an annular foot lever hinged interiorly of the case diametrally oppositethe said front slot in a manner to traverse the positions of said lateral slots, a pedal extending through said front slot to a rigid attachment with said foot lever, studs secured to said foot lever to extend through said lateral slots respectively, levers extending laterally of the pivotal axes of said-lidhinges respectively, and links connecting said levers and said studs respectively.
I AMBROSE cALoAGNo.
