COVER FOR PAILS OR TUBS.
SPEGIFIGATIOF forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,111, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed February 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ELIAKIMRIGE, of Nan net, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Pails or Tubs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in covers for pails and tubs; and it consists in attaching the three parts of the cover together by means of a metallic plate, which is provided with a number of slots which extend at right angles to each other, and through which pass nails or screws, to limit the movements of the various parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A represents a tub or pail having a recess, B, made in its top edge to receive the cover. This recess is made largest or widest at its top or bottom, and the edge of the cover is made of a corresponding shape, so that when the cover is placed inside of the top of the tub or pail, and then the parts of the cover are expanded outward, the cover will be so held that it cannot be raised until the wedge which expands the cover has been drawn outward, so as to allow the cover to be contracted The two parts 0 of this cover are connected together by a metallic plate, D, which is provided with the slots E, so as to allow one of the parts to move inward toward the other. Between these two parts is placed the wedge G, which has a flange, I, projecting from both of its edges to catch in corresponding grooves in the inner edges of the two boards or parts of the cover. In opposite edges of the pail are cut the two notches a, which correspond in shape and size to the ends of the wedge G, and in these notches the ends snugly fit, as shown in Fig. 1, when the cover is in position. Passing down through the long slot 0 in the plate is a nail or screw, N, which catches in this wedge, and which nail or screw acts as a stop to limit the movement of the wedge back and forth. Through the slots E, into that part of the cover just under them, are passed the nails or screws a, which bind the plate and that part of the cover together. As these nails or screws do not bind the plate tightly down upon this part of the cover, this part of the cover can move freely back and forth the distance of the two slots E. This wedge acts in the usual manner for the purpose of expandin g the two parts of the cover tightly into the recess formed in the top of the tub or pail, and thus locking the cover securely in place.
By the use of the slotted plate the three parts of the cover are secured together so that they cannot become separated or lost, and yet are allowed a free movementupon each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A cover for pails and tubs composed of the two parts 0 and wedge G, in combination with the plate 1), having the slots E O, and the nails or screws a N, which pass through the slots and limit the movements of the parts, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of January, 1880.
