UNITED STATES PATENT (Dineren.A
THEOBALD LEININGER, OF WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, MERCER COUNTY, OHIO.
IM PROVEM ENT IN WATER- ELEVATO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,917, dated December 23, 1879 application tiled November 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THEOBALD LEININGER, ofWashington township. in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Elevating Water; I and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved portable elevating` and force pump for raising and discharging water from ponds, cisterns, wells, or running streams, and which may be em,- ployed for extinguishing lires and for various domestic and industrial purposes.
The invention consists in a pump-chamber provided with a suitable inductionopening and valve, and with a piston, which may be also provided with an induction-opening and valve, the said pistou being provided with a hollow piston-rod having a dischargefspout,
and attached to an operating-lever by a swivelconnection, whereby the spout may be turned in any direction to discharge the water, as more fully hereinafter specified.
The drawing represents a vertical sectional view of my invention, in which the letter A represents a pump-cylinder of any suitable capacity, and constructed of any desired material. The said cylinder has an induction-opening, B, at its bottom, and an inwardly-opening valve, O.
The letter D indicates the piston, which may also be provided with an induction-opening, E, and valve F. From said piston extends upwardly a hollow piston-rod, Gr, which is provided with a lateral discharge-spout, H, near y its top. The upper end of said piston-rod is provided with a bead, I, which sits an d is adapted to turn `in an annular recess, K, in a connecting-piece, L, which is pivoted tothe operating-lever M, forming a swivel-joint, which permits the piston to be turned so as to point the discharge-spout in any desired direction.
The lever M is fulcrumed -to a standard, N, secured to the base of the apparatus, the said base being supported upon legs O, so as to el evate the pump slightly when placed in position. The lever M is intended to be of suilicient length to enable several persons to operate it togethen'in order to secure a maximum of power.
The apparatus may be employed either as a submerged or surface pump. In the former case the piston is provided with an inductionopening as well as the cylinder, to insure rapidity in filling the cylinder. In the latter case the opening in the piston is securely closed, so that the water will be received at the aperture in the cylinder alone. When used as a surface-pump the cylinder may be set in the water, so that its lower end will be covered by the same, or the opening at said lower end may be provided with a hose, which may be extended into the water.
It will be evident that the apparatus may i be applied to all purposes where it is required to elevate water, and can hence be used as a garden-engine for watering plants, as a lireengine for elevating' water into buildings, and for various domestic and industrial purposes. l i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of the pump-cylinder A, provided with induction-opening B and valve O, the piston D, provided with opening E and valve F, the hollow piston-rod G and spout H, and the connection L, secured to the pistonrod by aswivel-joint and to thelever M, whereby the pistonrod may be turned to direct the dischargespout, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have.hereunto set my hand this 24th day of November, 1879.
THEOBALD LEININGER.
