'1 Clarins.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in hair driers and more particularly to a drier of the helmet type.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a hair drier which operates on the principle of sucking warm air through the hair to be dried, thus applying the drying air most effectively and eliminating hot blasts of air in the patrons face and the subjection of the patron to other inconveniences.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
'In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the drier.
Figure 2 is a top plan view. j
Figure 3 .is a section on line 3-3 of Figure l.
-Figure 4 is a cross section on line l-I of Figure l.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary plan view, partly in section, of the heating unit.
Referring to the drawings wherein like nu merals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the helmet which can -be constructed of rubber, Bakelite papier-mch, or other suitable material.
The lower edge of the helmet 5 is provided with a channel 6, which contains the heating unit 1. This heater consists of an elongated body 8 of insulating material, containing or supporting a suitable heating resistance 9. This structure as aunit is supported in the channel i by any suitable means. The channel 6 is provided with openings I0 in-the top, and similar openings in the bottom, for the circulation of air.
Attached to or supported by the helmet 5 are flexible, elastic members comprising sheets I2 and I3, of rubber or other iiexible and elastic material, adapted to close the space between the lower edge f the helmet 5 and the head of the patron. These sheets I2 and I3 are vulcanized or otherwise secured at their lower edges to an elastic band I5 preferably of sponge -rubber, and at their upper edges have strengthening ribs or beads I 1, adapted to rest in grooves in the helmet. 'I'he linner sheet I2 is provided, near its lower edge, with a series of openings IS for the escape of air.
Inclined ange-like deiiectors I 8 are provided y on the inner side of the helmet 5 and serve to deflect warm air into the hair of the patron.
Numeral I! represents 'the suction line which extends from the nipple 20 in the top of the helmet.
This suction line I9 is preferably constructed of rubber tubing through the wall of which extends the electric cord cr conductors 2l which are connected in a suitable manner to the heating element 9.
Thus it can be seen that suction is applied to the hair of the patron and this suction serves to draw warm air through the openings I6 from the compartment II and heating unit l.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specic terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. In a hair drier, the combination of an in flexible helmet provided with an outlet opening adapted to be positioned over but be spaced from the crown of the head, a heater adjacent the edge of the helmet, and an air channel extending downwardly from the helmet comprising an inner pliable member supported at its upper edge by the' helmet adjacent one side of the heater and extending downwardly therefrom and having openings therein near the lower edge thereof and remote from the outlet opening in the helmet and a companion pliable member supported at its upper edge adjacent the other side of the heater and extending downwardly therefrom, and a pliable band to which the lower edges of the pliable members are secured, and a suction pipe secured to the helmet over the outlet opening.
2. In an inflexible hair drier, the combination of a. helmet provided with an outlet opening and adapted to bepositioned over but be spaced from the crown of the head, a. heater surrounding and supported from the .edge of the helmet, 'and an air channel comprising an inner pliable member adapted to surround the head and be supported at its upper edge by the helmet adjacent one side of the heater and extending downwardly therefrom and having openings therein near the lower edge remote from the outlet opening in the helmet to admit the delivery of air and a companion pliable' member surrounding but spaced from the rst member supported at its upper edge adjacent the other side of the heater and extending downwardly therefrom, and a pliable band to which the lower edges of the pliable members are secured, and an exhaust pipe connected to the outlet opening.
3. In an inflexible hair drier, the combination of a helmet having an -outlet adapted to be positioned over but be spaced from `the crown of the head, a heater supported by the edge of the helmet and a surrounding air channel comprising an inner elastic member secured at its upper edge to the helmet and extending downwardly therefrom and having adjacent its lower edge openings therethrough remote from the outlet in the helmet for the passage of air and an outer surrounding elastic member spaced from the inner elastic member and secured at its upper edge to the helmet and extending downwardly therefrom in such a way as to permit the passage of air to the channel between them, and an elastic band to which the lower edges of the two pliable members are secured and which is adapted to engage with the head of the patron, and means for drawing air through the air channel, and out of the helmet.
4. In a hair drier, the combination of a rigid helmet having an outlet therein adapted to be positioned over but be spaced from the crown of the head, a chamber having openings in the top and bottom thereof supported by and surrounding the lower edge of the helmet, a heater ar" ranged in the chamber, and means for conducting air to the head comprising two spacedapart pliable members each attached at one edge to and completely surrounding the chamber one within and the other without the openings therein, theinnermember having openings remote from the outlet in the helmet adjacent the lower edge thereof, means adapted to close the space between the other edges of the pliable members, and means for causing air to pass through the heater, between the companion pliable members,
40 through the openings in the inner pliable member, and through the helmet.
5. In a hair drier, the combination of an inflexible helmet having an outlet therein adapted to be positioned over but spaced from the 45 crown of the head, a channel having openings in the top and bottom thereof surrounding the lower edge of the helmet, a heater arranged in the channel, means for conducting air to the head comprising two spaced-apart pliable members each attached at its upper edge to and completely surrounding the channel, one within and the other without the openings in the lower part thereof, the lower edge of the inner pliable member having openings therein that are remote from the outlet in the helmet, and an elastic band adapted to close the space between the lower ends of the pliable members and engage the face of the user, and means for drawing air over the heater, through the channel formed by the pliable members, and through the outlet in the helmet.
6. In a hair drier, the combination of a rigid helmet having an outlet in the top thereof and adapted to be positioned over and spaced from the crown of the head, a hollow member having openings in the top and bottom supported by and surrounding the lower edge of the helmet, a heater in the hollow member. a surrounding air chamber comprising inner and outer pliable lmembers secured together at their lower edges and each attached at its upper edge to the hollow member one within and the other without the openings in the lower part thereof the inner pliable member having openings in the lower edge thereof, and means for causing air to pass into the chamber between the pliable members and through the outlet in the helmet.
'7. In a hair drier, the combination of a rigid helmet having an outlet in the top thereof and adapted to be positioned over and spaced from the crown of the head, a hollow member having openings in the top and bottom supported by and surrounding the lower edge of the helmet; a heater in the hollow member, a surrounding air chamber comprising inner and outer pliable members secured together at their lower edges and each attached at its upper edge to the hollow member one within and the other without the openings in the lower part thereof the inner pliable member having openings in the lower edge thereof, means for causing air to pass over the heater into the chamber between the pliable members and through the outlet in the helmet, and one or more substantially annular deflectors within the helmet adapted to force thel current of air onto the head of the patron.
