Description

Jan. 2, 1941). HEYMAN 2,185,811
SEALING RING Filed Aug. 31, 1939 31TH I INVENTOR /Va f/va/v Hey/nan mvmmmfmmm ATTORNEYS Patented -J an. 2, 1940 SEALING RING Nathan Heyman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Oscar Heyman & Brothersyllnc New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York I Application august 31, 1939, Serial No. 292,868
' 4 Claims. (01. 53-4 This invention relates to finger rings, more particularly to sealing rings, and has for its object the provision of an improved ring of this character. The ring of the inventioncomprises a rotatable member mounted in or attached to an exterior portion of the band of the ring having one or more surfaces upon which letters, names, decorations, symbols, insignia or the like (hereinafter called characters) are engraved or encrusted. The exterior portion of the rotatable member which contains the character is partly or entirely cylindrical and is constructed and arranged to be rolled overthe surface of the wax to impress the character therein. Ina particularly advantageous embodiment of the in-" vention the rotatable member is in the form of an elongated cylinder mounted to rotate around its longitudinal 'axis in suitable supporting brackets attached to the ring band. In view of the relatively long surface which the exterior of the cylinder.inayfprovide, various words or names and elaborate designs may be formed on :the surface thereof.
Theinvention will be better understood from a consideration ofthe accompanying drawing taken in conjunction with the following description, in which: 4
Fig. lis a side elevational view, partlyin section, of a ring embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the ring of Fi .1; and- I Y Figs. '3, 4, and illustrate arrangements of characters such as may be formed on an exterior surface of the rotatable'member. 35 In the accompanying drawing, the ring I which i may be formed of any suitable metal, such as gold-platinum or the like, has an annular band 2, a recess 3 formed in the upper or headjportion of the band, and two upwardly extending brackets 4. A rotatable member 5, preferably in the form of an elongated cylinder, is mounted in the recess between thebrackets. Any suitable means may be provided for rotatably mounting and supporting the cylinder ,in the recess and in engagement with the brackets. As shown in the drawing, each bracket has a pintle l; arranged to coincide with the central opening 8V in the cylinder. It is understood, of course, that a pin or shaft may be similarly employed.
Asbest shown in Fig. 2, the median plane It! of the ring passes through the central portion of the recess and brackets, and the longitudinal axis ll ofthe-rotatable member 5 is parallel to and preferably embraces the median plane.
Any suitable character |5 may be engraved in or encrusted upon the cylindrical surface of the rotatable member, such as the characters illustrated Figs. 3, 4, and 5. In a preferred constructioniof sealing ring embodying the invention, the rotatable member and means for 6 mounting it in the ring band comprising the recess 3 and brackets l are so constructed and arranged that the exterior cylindrical surface of the cylinder 5 projects above the adjacent portionsof the'ring, thereby enabling the cyl- 10 inder to contact with and berolled upon any suitable surface without interference. The ring accordinglyfprovides means for effectively impressing various characters, including names or words, into hot wax or the like ,by merely pressingthesurface ofthe cylinder against the wax and rolling the cylinder thereover.
I claim; g I
1. A sealing ring which comprises a finger band, a recess formed in an exterior portion of go the band, at least-two oppositely disposed bracki ets, a pintle on each bracket, and a rotatable member mounted on the pintles, said rotatable member having a Wax-impressing character ior'med'on theexterior surface thereof, and be- 1 ing freely rotatable, whereby the rotatable member may be rolled over wax and [the character impressed therein.
A sealing ring which comprises a finger band, two oppositely disposed brackets on the band, a freely rotatable cylinder mounted between the brackets, a wax-impressing character formed on a surface of the cylinder whereby said cylinder may be rolled over wax and" the character impressed therein. 7 r
3. A scaling ringv which comprises a f nger band, a cylinderrotatablymountedin an exterior portion of the band, the longitudinal axis of the cylinder being parallel to the median plane of the "band, and a waxdmpressing character 40 formed or he exterior cylindrical surface of thecyiincie'r, said cylinder being freely rotatable whereby it be rolled over Wax and the character impressed therein.
, l. A sealing ring which comprises a finger rotatable member having a wax-impressing character formed on a cylindrical surface thereof, means for mountingthe rotatable member on the band, said band, mounting means and. rotatable member being constucted and ar- 59' ranged that .the'rotatable member is freely rotatable and may be rolled over wax and the character impressed therein.
