This invention relates to printing telegraph control mechanism and is particularly adapted to control the receiver units in a distinctive manner upon the reception of successive electrical impulses. the characteristics of which are the same. More particularly the invention relates to key control mechanism comprising a double step relay, and an object of which is to provide means to be actuated by successive electrical impulses, having similar characteristics, the first of which causes an electrical control switch to be operated which remains in said. operative position, and the second of said impulses causes the electrical switch to return to its normal inoperative position.
This feature when particularly applied to the case shift mechanism is extremely useful and important in that separate shifting and unshifting control mechanisms are eliminated.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will be obvious from the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying the invention or from an inspection of the accompanying drawing, and the invention also constitutes certain new and novel features of the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The invention can be embodied in a considerable variety of constructions, and of these one has been selected for specific description and illustration herein the one which at the present time is believed to exhibit the invention in its most convenient and effective form. The construction referred to is one form ofpower driven recording units particularly adaptable to printing telegraph systems and described in my copending application Serial No. 677,018 filed June 22, 1933.
Referring now to the drawing in which similar parts are designated by the same numerals in the several views, it is believed that a clear understanding of the invention will be had therefrom when considered In conjunction with the following description.
For the sake of clarifying the following description, the operation of the recording unit will be given first, followed by a description of the operation and of the parts of the double step relay necessary for a full understanding of this invention.
Recording mechanism As mentioned before for illustrative purposes, 5 this invention is shown as embodying a power driven typewriter of the type disclosed in the aforesaid application, the construction of which is well known to those in the art, and hence requires only the following brief description.
Referring now to Fig. 1, in the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, well known means are provided for actuating the type bars and case shift mechanism by power operated devices comprising a power driven roller I0. 15
A cam II is pivoted on one arm of a bell crank lever l2 pivoted in the frame, the other arm of which is operatively connected with one arm of a bell crank lever I3 by means of link II. The other arm of lever I3 is connected to the type bars (not shown) in a well known manner and fully disclosed in the aforesaid application.
The lever I2 is actuated by the cam H when the latter engages the driven roller III to be operated thereby. The engagement of the cam ll $5 with the power roller is controlled automatically by means of the solenoid l8 connected to the key bar ll by link ID. The cam II is resiliently engaged by a springpressed arm 20 which tends to turn it into engagement with the power driv- 30 on roller or a. stop 2i on a lever 22 pivoted on the bell crank l2 and normally arranged in the path of 9. lug 23 on the cam. When the lever 22 swings to move its step out of the path of the lug, the arm 20 swings the cam into engagement as with the power roller to be actuated thereby to swing the bell crank l2 to actuate its connected mechanism. The lever 22 has an arm 2| which is provided with an oflset projection 25 at its end which projects laterally through an opening 40 in the bell crank l2 and engages the bifurcated lower end 26 of an arm 21 of a key lever ll pivoted on the common rod 28 and linked to the solenoid l8. It is obvious then that energization of solenoid IS in causing a key lever ll to be 45 depressed releases the revolubly mounted cam I l to engage and be actuated by power roller III in turn operating bell crank i2 and its attached links to cause the associated mechanism such as the key bars or case shift mechanism to be operated.
One of the links it connected to a bell crank I2 is associated with the case shifting mechanism (not shown) well known in the art and a disclosure of which is given in U. S. Patent 1,945,097
issued to R. G. Thompson, et 9.1., January 30, 1934,
so that further description is not necessary since the case shifting mechanism itself is not claimed as part of this invention. It is understood that the case shift mechanism remains in its operated position so long as the controlling key bar I! is depressed which is the common practice.
Double step relay Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 illustrating one form of a double-step relay the function of which is to control the key lever mechanism for example, the case shift lever mechanism so that it remains in its operative position upon the reception of a particular impulse and to be rendered inoperative upon the receipt of a second impulse having the same characteristics.
The relay comprises a. magnet which, upon energization, will rock its armature 3| to which is attached an extension arm 32 and pivotally mounted at 33. Arm 32 also carries at its free end a pawl 34 which is pivoted thereto and pressed by a spring 35 into engagement with a ratchet 33 having 20 teeth. A leaf spring member 31 fastened to the frame 38 serves as a detent to hold ratchet 36 in position. Rocking of armature 3| will cause the arm 32 to be moved to the right as viewed in Fig. 3, which upon deenergization, is urged by spring 39 attached to arm 32 and member 40 to advance ratchet 38 one tooth.
Member 40 is rigidly fixed to an extension 4| of frame 38. Ratchet 36 is mounted upon a rod 42 mounted on frame 38 and which also carries a slotted cam 43 having half the number of slots as teeth in the said ratchet. Cooperating with the cam 43 are contacts 44 adapted to be closed when the high surfaces of cam 43 are engaged. Since ratchet 36 has 20 teeth and cam 43 has 10 high surfaces, it is obvious that a single operation of magnet 30 will close contacts 44 and a second energization of the magnet will permit them to resume the position they occupy in Fig. 3. The function of contacts 44 will be fully explained in connection with the circuit diagram.
Operation Referring to Fig. 2, magnet 33 is shown as adapted to be connected to a printing'telegraph line or radio network suitable to receive single characteristic impulses. Upon the receipt of the first impulse contacts 44 are adapted to be closed as fully explained above to cause the circuit 45 to energize the solenoid l3 connected to key lever I1. Closure of contacts 44 causes the condenser 45 to discharge through the windings of solenoid It! to overcome initial inertia of solenoid i3 and during the remaining period of energizing the said solenoid preventing a short circuit of the current mains 41. Energization of solenoid I8 in the manner just described causes a key lever IT to be depressed to release the cam H and then actuated by power roller Ill to rotate the cam a half revolution which causes the bell crank lever l2 to operate its connected mechanism, preferably the case shift mechanism through the connecting link I6.
The case shift mechanism will remain in this operated position during the period solenoid l8 remains energized. Upon reception of the second impulse contacts 44 are caused to be opened to break the local circuit 45 to deenerglze solenoid I8 releasing its connected key lever H to restore the case shift mechanism to its original position.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a single modification, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention therefore to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:
'1. In a printing telegraph recording unit, operating instrumentalities, power operated devices individual to said instrumentalities, a plurality of keys each adapted to cause actuation of one of the power operated devices, means for operating said keys, and means to control said key operating means, said control means adapted to function in a different manner upon successive operations thereof.
2. A printing telegraph recording unit com prising case shift instrumentalitles, power operated devices individual to said instrumentalities, a key adapted to cause actuation of said power operated device, control means for operating said case shift key, and means to operate the said key alternately automatically upon successive operations of the said control means.
3. In a. printing telegraph recording unit, the combination of a case shift mechanism, a power driven roller, a cam movable into operative engagement with said roller for actuating said case shift mechanism, a movable key lever for controlling the engagement of said cam with the power driven roller, electromagnetic means for operating said case shift key lever, and means comprising an electromagnetically controlled switch to operate the said key alternately upon successive operations of the last named means.
4. In a remotely controlled recording mechanism, the combination of an operating instrumentality, a power operated device individual to said instrumentality, a key lever adapted to cause actuation of said power operated device, means for operating said key lever, a circuit adapted to be energized by successive impulses, and means included in said circuit to control the operation of said key lever whereby the associated power operated device is controlled in a different manner upon successive energization of said circuit.
5. In a remotely controlled recording mechanism, the combination of an operating instrumentality, a power operated device individual to said instrumentality, a key lever adapted to cause actuation of said power operated device, means for operating said key lever, a circuit adapted to be energized by successive impulses having the same characteristics, and means included in said circuit comprising electromagnetic means to control the operation of said key lever whereby the associated power operated device is controlled in a different manner upon successive cnergization of said circuit.
6. In a remotely controlled recording mechanisrn. the combination of an operating instrumentality, a power operated device individual to said instrumentality, a key lever "ncluding controlling means adapted to cause actuation of said power operated device. 'a circuit adapted to be energized by successive impulses, and means included in said circuit comprising a double step relay to control the operation of said key lever whereby the associated power operated dcvice is controlled in a different manner upon sum cessive energization of said circuit.
7. In a remotely controlled recording mechanism, the combination of an operating instrumentality, a key lever and control means therefor adapted to cause operation of said instrumentality, and electromagnetic means adapted to control the operation of the key lever, including means connected at all times to said control means, whereby the said instrumentaiity is controlled in a diil'erent manner upon successive energization, at all times, of said electromagnetic means.
12. In a remotely controlled mechanism, the combination of an operating instrumentality, a lever to actuate said instrumentality, electromagnetic means cooperating with said lever to operate the lever upon its energization and deenergization respectively, and operable means to control the energization of the said electromagnetic means upon successive operation of the said operable means.
13. In a remotely controlled mechanism, the combination of an operating instrumentality, a lever to actuate said instrumentality. electromagnetic means cooperatlng with said lever to operate the lever upon its energization, and a relay adapted to control the energization and deenergization respectively of said electromagnetic means upon successive operation of the said relay.
