Description
Nov.2,1937. R. CLED-INA l:2,097721 7 ROLLER SKATE 'Filed June 9, 1954 2 sheets-Sheet 1 Patented Nov. 2, 1937 v l com21 nonnen sxsrn Raphael Cledina, Liege, Belgium Application 4.lune 9, 1934, Serial No. 729,888
.Y use] l 4 claims. This invention-has for its object to realize a 4roller skate having steering and braking devicesand permitting a parallel running of the skates similar to that known by ski-running.
The invention will be described with'reference,
to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a planl view of a roller skate; Figure 2, a side elevation and Figure 3. a iront view of thesame: Figure 4,` a partial front view of the steering device after action; Figure 5, a side elevation of the roller skate in a modied form: Figure 6. a. front view oi' the same: Figure' '1. a
side elevation of the'roller skate in a furthermodifjied iorm'and Figure 8 a plan view of the 3 same. v i
l Referring to the drawings, the frame l oi the roller skate vis preferably made of sheet metal, which is bent to form two branches la, lb, supported by the axle 2 of the back wheel 3, which is 2g provided with rubber tyres. The frame I may be made lalso of a slight cast metal. The back wheel 3 is arranged by means of a suitable known device so as to be prevented from running backwards, but only forwards-fior' ex-A ample by means of a ratchet wheel la secured to the back wheel and acted on by a spring ieontrolled pawl Ib. 4(.lrossbarsl arenttedtothefrontpartoithe `freine i and they carry a supporting plate-l oi so conventional design to which the boot is secured 4 by means of wellknown fastening devices. such as i clamps ia. The supporting Aplate IA is pivoted around apin 8 connecting the frame branches la, lb towards the heel portion ol the plate. The
3l'. backwheelaxleisprovidedwithabrakedruml surrounded by a brake band I connected at la by conventional means to the rear end of the4 sup piste t. At its front part, the frame I is lprovided lwith 4o a rod II which forms an extension thereof frame ltbeing pivotally connected at l, l' and l" to a longitudinal rod Il extending towardsthe Iorewbeel axle il toformabearing Ii for aver tical pin "carried by thesaid axle Il. 'lliepln 45 l! is formed integral with ornxed to a toothed f segment I4 which engages with a second toothed t Il carried by the forked end Il' of the By the described mue!p skate, tne'mr 5o doesnot go forwardby swaying from one side to the other as is known with ordinary miler 'skates v 'TT-but rather he advances by ski-running and -by maintaining the skates parallel to one another. the skate being prevented by the ratchet `wheel 5s from running back. 1
June 1.1, 1933 (o1. sse-11.20)
1f the sksterwisnes to change the direction of his run,v he presses the plate 5 to one side causing the frame i to pivot laterally around the rod lo towardsthe desired side thereby causing the toothed segment II to rotate the toothed segment `5 Il, for displacing the steering axle Il in the corresponding direction. Springs I'I are arranged between the bearing Il and the forked end I6 of the frame rod I6 in order to limit themotion of the axle I3 and to assist in returning the frame I l0 to its normal horizontal condition.
'For brs'sing, the'skater presses down with the heel the back portion of the plate l, causing the latter to pivot around the .pin 6. By this movement a tractlve eilort lon the brake bands 8 is 15 produced so as to bring the latter into contact.
with the brake drums 1. i
It will also be noted that the toothed segments Il, Il of the steering device may be replaced by a forked extension termina ing arms Il and lla disposed so as to bearagainst and actuate the steering axle I3 on one side or the other of the vertical pin l2, according as the y frame i is inclined by the skater towards the right or the left.v (Figs. 5, 6.) f 25 Having thus described my present invention. what I now claim and desire to secure by letters Patent is:
l. In a roller skate having forward wheels and a rear'wheel, the combination oi a laterally swingso ing frame, means actuated by said frame for steering the iorward'wheeis of the skate, e longitudinally tiltable plate resting -ou said frame and actuated bythe heel ot the skater. means actuated by said plate tor brakingthe skate, and l means to prevent the skate from running back- 2. In a roller skate, a laterally swinging frame. means actuated by. said trame lor steering the skate. a longitudinally tiltable plate secured to 4o the boot ot the skate and resting upon said frame. apin secured to the said trame and onwhich the said plate may tilt, means actuated by said tiltable plate for `braking the skate, and means to prevent the skatejirom running back- 3. In a roller skate. alaterally swirigillA frame,
' arodconnectedtosaidframe having aforked end projecting upwardly. a toothed segment carried bysaidiorkedenda.sewndtootheds'egxnentn- 50 sed with .the ont toothed segmcnt.' s vertical pin carrying 'said secondtoothed segment and the rod i! and hav- 20 A2 comme ,may be steexed, o. longimdlnally tiltble plato of the. sand verticalpin, a. bearing member reo rod connected to theI said frame having a forked r the forke end ,tz
secured tothe boot of the skater and resting upon ceiving the said vertical pin ond comprising a rod mid frame, means actuated by said plate for on which the frame mayswing! whereby the skate b e, 1 the skate, ond means to prevent the ekate may be steered, o longitudinally tiltable plate from running backwards. secured to the boot of the skater and re$ting uponN 5 4. In a roller skew, a laterally swinging frame, saidfmme, means actuated by soleil plate for skate, and means to prevent the skate and, o. vertica pin cameo! by the wheel axle, sold from running backwards.
