UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH WISSEN, AOF DEOATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUNTER-SUPPORT AND SEAM-PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,943, dated October 15, 1878; application tiled September 13, 1878.
To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, J osErn WIssEN, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Seam -Protector and Supporter for Boots and Shoes; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this speciication, in Which- Figure l represents, in perspective, a portion of a boot with my seam-protector attached to it. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a view of the seam-protector detached.
My invention relates to a metallic device, to be located over the side seam, uniting the upper and counter of a boot, and attached by a series of rivets to both said upper and counter to protect the seam and support it.
My invention consists in a metallic plate having a series of rivet-holes made close to two of its edges'to receive rivets, by which it is fastened to both the upper and counter over the ordinary side seam, in combination with a shoulder formed on said plate at or adjacent to its lower portion, to rest upon the edge of the sole of the boot and support the seam, in the manner explained hereinafter.
In the drawings, A represents the counter of a boot or shoe, and B a portion of the upper of the same. They are united by ordinary side seams at a, and one or both of these seams is re-enforced and protected by a plate, C, of sheet metal or cast metal. This plate has distinct features from the ordinary counter-supporters in use. The latter generally de.- pend upon the heel D of the boot as a support against which they are braced and screwed. This plate C is riveted to both the upper and the counter of the boot up to a considerable height, so as to afford a support and protection for the side seam a., that otherwise often rips open under the pressure exerted by the feet ofl persons having a tendency to run over. It has a shoulder, c, to rest upon the edge of the boot-sole E and to add to the stili'- ness and stability of the parts. This plate terminates in a short prong, c', made to enter easily between the sole and the upper, where it will remain Without any additional fastening, the series of rivets b passing through the counter A and one edge of the plate and through the upper B and the other edge ot' A the same plate, forming the only fastening necessa-ry for that purpose. The plate C has a vertical groove, d, upon its outer surface, to imitate the side seam a, and its upper end is rounded off to improve its appearance.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- A combined counter-support and seam-protector consisting of a metallic plate, C, having a series of holes upon each side to receive rivets for securing it to both the counter and upper, as shown and described, and provided with a shoulder and prong, all substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH WISSEN. Vitnesses:
