Abstract
The present invention comprises a new and improved exercise device that is specifically adapted to assist a user engaged in abdominal crunches. The device comprises an elongated, arcuate board having a pair of handle grips extending from the sides thereof. Users engage the handles of the device and place their hands alongside their head during the crunch exercise. This is accomplished without placing strain on the neck. Rather than placing a tugging load on the back of the user's head, the board distributes this load across the back of the head, neck, and upper back of the user, thereby avoiding neck flexion. Overall, the device supports both the head and upper back, and eliminates neck pain when performing an abdominal crunch. The device includes adjustable side handles to ensure hands are properly placed, and stabilizes the head and neck while a person performs abdominal exercises. The device improves form during the exercise and improves core performance.
Description
- This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/076,058, filed Nov. 6, 2014, entitled “Ab Crunch Neck Support,” the entirety of which is hereby incorporated by reference.
- The present disclosure relates generally to devices for abdominal crunches.
- Core exercises are critical for those seeking to improve their overall strength and athleticism, or simply to tone their abdominal region. Many core exercises exist, but the most popular and widely adopted is the abdominal crunch exercise. The abdominal crunch is an exercise in which users lie face up and engage their abdominal region as they lift their shoulder blades from the ground. Several forms are used, including placing one's hands behind their head, placing their hands one their chest, or extending their arms for added difficulty. The crunch is differentiated from a full sit-up in that full flexion is not required. Users focus on their abdomen while lifting their head and shoulders from the floor, squeezing their core, and then returning to a starting position.
- Placing hands behind the head during the exercise can create added resistance as the user flexes their upper body forward. However, in this form there is an innate reaction to pull on the back of the head while performing the exercise. Not only is this contrary to the exercise, but this may strain the muscles of the neck.
- Example embodiments are described herein in the context of devices for aiding a user in performing abdominal crunches. These illustrative embodiments are mentioned not to limit or define the invention, but rather to provide examples to aid understanding thereof. Illustrative embodiments are discussed in the Detailed Description, which provides further description of the invention. Advantages offered by various embodiments of this invention may be further understood by examining this specification.
