1 Claim. (Cl. 24-47) This invention relates to an improvement in paper fasteners and has particular reference to a paper fastener designed for use in connection with a work holder such as a folder for containing a file of correspondence or other papers.

The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive, yet efficient, paper fastener which may be readily applied in any predetermined position on a work holder to effectively hold a file of papers in desired position in or on the work holder.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood by reference to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which is illustrated a paper fastener embodying a typical form of the invention.

Referring now to the drawing, and especially Figs, 2 and 3. the form of paper fastener there disclosed embodies a base In and a wire clip The base l may be formed of any suitable flexible sheet material, for example, strong but thinpaper or cloth and is preferably gummed or coated with suitable adhesive material on its back side l2. The adhesive material may be of any suitable kind but preferably of the kind which is normally dry and becomes sticky upon wetting.

of course it will be understood that the elements l3, I4 and I9 are'formed from' a single base.

In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the wire member is bent so that the V-shaped paper gripping element I'9a crosses portions of the legs 13a and Ida. The legs are also bent so that portions thereof I31) and Nb respectively extend substantially at right angles to the general direction of the paper gripper I9a. As indicated, the leg portions I31) and Mb are projected through the base element Illa in substantially the same manner as explained in connection with Figs. 2 and 3. In this arrangement, it will be observed that because of the angular relation between the leg portions lb and Nb and the paper gripping portion I Be, the wire member is somewhat more effectively anchored to the base element against displacement as an incident to the insertion or removal of paper sheets between the gripper portion- I91; and the base Illa. In the form shown in Fig. 2, anchorage of the wire member depends upon the adhesive contact between the. back of the base and underlying leg portion, the frictional gripping of the said underlying leg portion between the base and the work holder, and upon the fact that the clip must more or less stretch or distort the paper backing before it can be withdrawn therefrom. Of course, when the paper backing is applied to a work holder, it is heldagainst the necessary-distortion and hence the clip is effectively anchored.v

In Fig. 1, there is illustrated a correspondence folder 2| which embodies a cover fold 22 and a back fold 23. This folder may be of any conventional construction, for example, simply a sheet of heavy paper folded approximately midway of its length. A paper fastener of the construction illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and designated A, is applied to the inside of the cover 22, near its top edge and intermediate the width thereof. A similar paper fastener A is also applied to the inside of the front cover near its bottom edge and intermediate its width. Paper sheets such as represented by the broken lines 25, are adapted to be held securely in place on the front cover by having their upper and lower margins inserted under the gripping portion IQ of the respective paper fasteners.

The back 23 of the folder is illustrated as being provided with a paper fastener designated l3b of the type illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5. In this instance the fastener is secured to the inside of the back near its inner edge and approximately midway of its upper and loweredges. Paper sheets such as represented by dotted lines 24 may be securely held in more or less book fashion by the paper fastener B positioned as illustrated. Obviously, the paper fastener may be applied in any desired-position on any kind of a work holder Also, the details of construction of the fastener may be greatly varied.

In some instances, it may be desired to eliminate the gummed base and anchor the paper fastener directly to the work holder. This may be done in various ways, for example, by projecting the leg portion of the clip through the work holder in the same manner as such leg portions are projected through the gummed base element as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Of course, such an omission of the described base element would be within the spirit of the invention.

Many changes in the described structure may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which should be determined by reference to the.following claims, the same being construed as broadly as possible, consistent with the state of the art.

I claim as my invention:

A device of the class described comprising a spring wire clip having leg and gripping portions respectively, and a base element of flexible fibrous material to which said clip leg portions are secured, said leg portions comprising a pair of spaced legs and each of said legs extending through said base element at spaced points so as to provide portions of the legs intermediate their lengths on the back of the base and portions of said legs adjacent both ends of said intermediate portions on the front of said base, whereby the base carries said clip in fixed position thereon and within its area, said base element serving to facilitate adhesive mounting of the device in fixed position on a work holder.
