The sliding carriage is connected to a connecting end of the string, and engages the rotatable member in such a manner that rotation of the rotatable member results in a linear movement of the sliding carriage in an axial direction that is parallel to a rotation axis of the rotatable member, which, in turn, results in a linear movement of the connecting end of the string in the axial direction.
Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a hand controlled regulator, more particularly to a hand controlled regulator for a resistance-providing device of an exerciser.
- 2. Description of the Related Art
- A conventional hand controlled
regulator 10 is connected to a resistance-providingdevice 3 of anexerciser 1 through astring 5, as best shown inFIG. 1 . - Referring to
FIG. 2 , the conventional hand controlledregulator 10 includes acasing 11, arotatable member 13, a string-mounting member 15, apost unit 14, apositioning disc 16, and anoperating knob 12. Thepost unit 14 is mounted securely in thecasing 11. The string-mounting member 15 is sleeved around thepost unit 14, and is formed with anannular groove 151. Therotatable member 13 is sleeved rotatably on thepost unit 14, has an annularlower part 131 disposed above and connected securely to the string-mounting member 15 for co-rotation therewith. Thestring 5 is wrapped around and is disposed in theannular groove 151 in the string-mounting member 15, and has a first end secured to the string-mounting member 15. An upper face of thecasing 11 is formed with a spring-mountingseat 11″ that has oppositecurved slots 110 which respectively receive left and right spring-loadedengaging balls operating knob 12 is mounted rotatably on thecasing 11 around the spring-mountingseat 11″. Thepositioning disc 16 is sandwiched between theoperating knob 12 and the spring-mounting seat 11″, is formed with a series of left ball-retaininggrooves 161 and a series of right ball-retaininggrooves 161, and is co-rotatable with theoperating knob 12. Thepositioning disc 16 has a central rectangular opening and is sleeved securely on therotatable member 13 for co-rotation therewith. The left and right spring-loadedengaging balls grooves 161 in thepositioning disc 16, thereby positioning theoperating knob 12 in a stationary state. The second end of thestring 5 is connected to the resistance-providingdevice 3 of theexerciser 1 under tension. - The conventional hand controlled
regulator 10 is disadvantageous in that rotation of theoperating knob 12 to increase the resistance of the resistance-providingdevice 3 is laborious. Moreover, undesired disengagement of the spring-loadedengaging balls grooves 161 may occur due to a counteract pulling force applied thereto, which results from the tension of thestring 5. - Therefore, the object of this invention is to provide a hand controlled regulator for a resistance-providing device of an exerciser so as to overcome the aforesaid disadvantages of the conventional hand controlled regulator.
- According to the present invention, a hand controlled regulator is adapted to be connected to a resistance-providing device through a string. The hand controlled regulator includes: a casing; an elongated rotatable member that is mounted rotatably on the casing, that defines a rotation axis, and that is operable to rotate about the rotation axis; and a sliding carriage that is mounted movably on the casing, that is adapted to be connected to a connecting end of the string, and that engages the rotatable member in such a manner that rotation of the rotatable member results in a linear movement of the sliding carriage in an axial direction that is parallel to the rotation axis, which, in turn, results in a linear movement of the connecting end of the string in the axial direction.

Since the pulling force resulting from the tension of thestring 53 and applied to therotatable member 40 through thesliding carriage 50 is in a direction parallel to the rotation axis, therotatable member 40 cannot be rotated to cause the slidingcarriage 50 to move in the axial direction. - In the first preferred embodiment, the

The other end of thestring 53 extends through ahole 26 in the lower casing half 22 (seeFIG. 6 ) to connect with the resistance-providingdevice 3″ of the exerciser 100 (seeFIG. 4 ). - The first preferred embodiment further includes a
hand operating mechanism 30 that engages thescrew rod 42, and that includes a driving member, such as adriving gear 31, and a driven member, such as a drivenpinion 41. Thedriving gear 31 is rotatably mounted in thecasing 20 adjacent to thescrew rod 42 through a pair of bearings 23 (only one is shown inFIG. 3 ) . The drivenpinion 41 is mounted securely and coaxially on thescrew rod 42, and meshes with thedriving gear 31. Thedriving gear 31 has an upper face formed with an indicating scale (C) (seeFIG. 5 ) to indicate a range of adjustment of the resistance-providingdevice 3″ of theexerciser 100 through thestring 53. The upper andlower casing halves driving gear 31 is partially exposed from thecasing 20 through the side opening 28 to facilitate turning of the same to rotate the driven pinion 41 (seeFIG. 7 ). In this preferred embodiment, the speed ratio of the drivenpinion 41 to thedriving gear 31 is greater than one such that one revolution of thedriving gear 31 results in revolutions of the drivenpinion 41 together with thescrew rod 42, thereby facilitating advancing of themovable carriage part 51. - Referring to

10. The hand controlled regulator as defined in claim 2 , wherein said casing is formed with a side opening, said hand controlled regulator further comprising a hand operating mechanism that engages said screw rod, and that includes a rack-and-pinion assembly having a pinion mounted securely and coaxially on said screw rod, a rack-holding member disposed in said casing and formed with a rack-guiding track extending in a direction transverse to said rotation axis, a rack member disposed slidably in said rack-guiding track and meshing with said pinion, and an operating lever connected to said rack member and extending outward therefrom through said side opening in said casing.
11. A hand controlled regulator adapted to be connected to a resistance-providing device through a string, said hand controlled regulator comprising:
a casing;
a screw rod that is mounted rotatably on said casing, that defines a rotation axis, and that is operable to rotate about said rotation axis;
a sliding carriage that is adapted to be connected to an end of the string, and that is formed with an inner thread engaging said screw rod; and
a hand operating mechanism that engages said screw rod, and that includes a driving member mounted in said casing, and a driven member mounted coaxially on said screw rod and engaging with said driving member so as to co-rotate with said driving member;
wherein, the speed ratio of said driven member to said driving member is greater than on so as to permit linear and accelerated movement of said sliding carriage.
12. A hand controlled regulator adapted to be connected to a resistance-providing device through a string, said hand controlled regulator comprising:
a casing formed with a side opening;
a screw rod that is mounted on said casing, that defines a rotation axis, and that is operable to rotate about said rotation axis;
a sliding carriage that is adapted to be connected to a connecting end of the string, and that is formed with an inner thread engaging said screw rod; and
a hand operating mechanism that engages said screw rod and that includes a rack-and-pinion assembly having a pinion mounted securely and coaxially on said screw rod, a rack-holding member disposed in said casing and having an upper face formed with a rack-guiding track extending in a direction transverse to said rotation axis, a rack member disposed slidably in said rack-guiding track and meshing with said pinion, and an operating lever connected to said rack member and extending outward therefrom through said side opening in said casing.
