Abstract
A rail assembly (10) for attaching a server tray (60) into a cabinet includes a pair of rail brackets (80) mounted in sidewalls of the cabinet, a pair of outer rails (30) movably received in the rail brackets, and a pair of inner rails (20) attached to opposite sides of the server and movably received in the outer rails. Each rail bracket includes a first part (40), and a second part (50) adjustably connected with the first part. Each outer rail has a blocking member (322, 322′) formed therein. Each inner rail has an acting member (242, 242′) formed therein engaging with the blocking member of the outer rail. Therefore the outer rails can be moved outward together with the inner rails for fully drawing the server out of the cabinet with the outer rail detaching from the rail bracket, when the server needs to be maintained.
Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention relates to a rail assembly, and particularly to a rail assembly which can conveniently attach a server to a cabinet.
- 2. Related Art
- A conventional rail assembly for mounting a server to a cabinet has a plurality of ball bearings or pulleys provided therein. This kind of rail assembly is shown in Taiwan Patent Application No. 089220370. The rail assembly comprises a rear bracket, a front bracket, a rail and a plurality of pulleys. The front bracket comprises a first connecting portion, and the rear bracket comprises a second connecting portion engaging with the first connecting portion. A length of a connection of the first connecting portion and the second connecting portion can be adjusted for fitting to various cabinets. Two blocking members are formed in opposite ends of the front bracket respectively, for limiting movement of the pulleys within the front bracket.
- In this rail assembly, when the server needs to be maintained, the server cannot be fully drawn out of the cabinet because the pulleys are restricted in the front bracket by the blocking members. This makes maintenance or replacement of the server inconvenient. In addition, the pulleys render the structure of the rail assembly unduly complicated and wide. Consequently, the cost of the rail assembly is high, and the rail assembly occupies excessive space in the cabinet.
- Thus, a rail assembly which overcomes above-mentioned problems is desired.
- Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a retaining assembly for a rack cabinet which is relatively inexpensive and can be conveniently assembled and used.
- To achieve the above-mentioned object, a rail assembly in accordance with the present invention comprises a rail bracket adapted to be mounted in a sidewalls of the cabinet, an outer rails movably received in the rail bracket, and an inner rails attached to a sides of a server tray and movably received in the outer rail. The rail bracket comprises a first part and a second part adjustably connected with the first part. The outer rail has a blocking member formed therein. Each of the inner rails has an acting member formed therein engaging with the blocking member of the outer rails. So the outer rail can be moved outward together with the inner rail for fully drawing the server out of the cabinet without the outer rail detaching from the rail bracket, when a server retained in the server tray needs to be maintained.
- Other objects, advantages and novel features of the present invention will be drawn from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the present invention with the attached drawings, in which:

- Referring to FIGS.1 to 6, a rail assembly in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the present invention comprises an
inner rail 20, anouter rail 30 and arail bracket 80. A pair of the rail assemblies is used for mounting a server tray 60 into a cabinet (not shown). - The
inner rail 20 comprises afirst base plate 22. Two guidingflanges 24 are formed on opposite longitudinal sides of thebase plate 22 respectively. Aresilient protrusion 242 is formed in an end of one of the guidingflanges 24. Three spacedfixing openings 224 are defined in thefirst base plate 22. Eachfixing opening 224 comprises a hole (not labeled), and a slot (not labeled) in communication with the hole. A width of the slot is less than a diameter of the hole. Aninserting hole 222 is defined in an end of thefirst base plate 22 that corresponds to theprotrusion 242. - The
outer rail 30 comprises asecond base plate 32. Two guidinghems 34 are formed along opposite longitudinal sides of thesecond base plate 32 respectively. Each guidinghem 34 is folded inwardly to form afirst railing 36 parallel to and offset from the guidinghem 34. Two first slidingspaces 38 are defined between the two respectivefirst railings 36 and thesecond base plate 32. Ablocking slot 322 is defined in thesecond base plate 32, corresponding to theprotrusion 242 of theinner rail 20. - The
rail bracket 80 comprises afirst part 40 and asecond part 50. Thefirst part 40 comprises athird base plate 42. Twosecond railings 46 are formed on opposite longitudinal sides of and parallel to thethird base plate 42. Two secondsliding spaces 48 are defined between the two respectivesecond railings 46 and thethird base plate 42. Afirst mounting portion 44 is formed at an end of thethird base plate 42. Threefirst mounting holes 442 are defined in thefirst mounting portion 44. Ahook 422 is formed in an opposite end of thethird base plate 42. Anelongated slot 424 is defined in thethird base plate 422 adjacent thehook 422. - The
second part 50 comprises afourth base plate 52. A pair of throughholes 522 is defined in thefourth base plate 52, corresponding theelongated slot 424. Asecond mounting portion 54 is formed at an end of thefourth base plate 52. Threesecond mounting holes 542 are defined in thesecond mounting portion 54. - Two fixing holes (not shown) are defined in opposite sides of the
server tray 60 respectively. A plurality ofmushroom posts 64 projects from each of the opposite sides of the server tray 60, themushroom posts 64 corresponding to thefixing openings 224 of theinner rails 20. - Referring also to FIG. 7, in assembly, the
second mounting portion 54 of thesecond part 50 of eachrail bracket 80 is firstly mounted in a rear portion of the cabinet by fixing means (not shown) engaging in thesecond mounting holes 542. The end of thefirst part 40 of therail bracket 80 having thehook 422 is received in thesecond part 50. A plurality of screws (not labeled) is sequentially inserted through theelongated slot 424 and the throughholes 522 for engaging with a plurality of corresponding screw caps (not labeled). Thus a portion of thefirst part 40 is slidably received in and engaged with thesecond part 50. A length of the portion of thefirst part 40 received in thesecond part 50 can be adjusted by adjusting the positions of the screws in theelongated slot 424. The first mountingportion 44 of thefirst part 40 is mounted in a front portion of the cabinet by fixing means (not shown) engaging in the first mounting holes 442. In this way, tworail brackets 80 are mounted in the cabinet. - The
inner rail 20 of eachrail bracket 80 is positioned against a corresponding side of theserver tray 60, with the corresponding mushroom posts 64 of theserver tray 60 extending through the holes of the respective fixingopenings 224 of theinner rail 20. Theinner rail 20 is then slid until necks of the mushroom posts 64 are received in the slots of the fixingopenings 224. A fastener (not shown) is inserted through the insertinghole 222 of theinner rail 20 and engaged in a corresponding fixing hole (not shown) of theserver tray 60. Theinner rail 20 is thus fixed to theserver tray 60. - The guiding
flanges 24 of theinner rail 20 are slid into the first slidingspaces 38 of theouter rail 30 until theprotrusion 242 of the inner rail is engaged in theblocking slot 322. In this way, a pre-assembly comprising twoinner rails 20, twoouter rails 30 and theserver tray 60 is obtained. The pre-assembly is then inserted into the cabinet by sliding the guidinghems 34 of theouter rails 30 along the second slidingspaces 48 of thefirst parts 40. - Referring to FIG. 8, in use, when a server retained in the
server tray 60 needs to be maintained or replaced, the server may be removed as follows. Theserver tray 60 is pulled outward. Theinner rails 20 are consequently pulled outward. Friction between theouter rails 30 and thefirst parts 40 is slightly greater than friction between theouter rails 30 andinner rails 20. Therefore, theouter rails 30 do not move until theprotrusions 242 of theinner rails 20 have moved to corresponding ends of the blockingslots 322. Then theouter rails 30 are moved together with theinner rails 20, by reason of theprotrusions 242 pushing theouter rails 30 at said ends of the blockingslots 322. Theserver tray 60 is thus fully withdrawn from the cabinet without theouter rails 30 detaching from thefirst parts 40, whereupon the server can be conveniently maintained or replaced. - When the
server tray 60 needs to be inserted back into the cabinet, theinner rails 20 are moved inward together with theserver tray 60. Theouter rails 30 are moved inward by fixing ears (not labeled) attached at front ends of the opposite sides of theserver tray 60. Theserver tray 60 is thus conveniently received in the cabinet. - Referring to FIG. 9, a
rail assembly 10′ in accordance with an alternative embodiment of the present invention comprises aninner rail 20′, anouter rail 30′ and arail bracket 80. Therail assembly 10′ is similar to therail assembly 10 of the preferred embodiment. The difference is that in therail assembly 10′, the blockingslot 322 of theouter rail 30 is substituted by a blockingplate 322′ of theouter rail 30′, and theprotrusion 242 of theinner rail 20 is substituted by atab 242′ provided on afirst base plate 22′ of theinner rail 20′. Assembly of therail assembly 10′ is substantially the same as that of therail assembly 10. In use of a pair of therail assemblies 10′, theouter rails 30′ are pulled out together with theinner rails 20′, by reason of thetabs 242′ engaging with the blockingplates 322′. - From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the present invention provides a rail assembly for attaching a server tray to a cabinet, whereby the server tray can be fully drawn out of the cabinet. This allows convenient maintenance or replacement of a server retained in the server tray. In addition, the rail assembly has a relatively simple structure, thereby reducing the cost of the producing the rail assembly. Furthermore, space occupied by the rail assembly is also reduced.
- It is understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof. Thus, the present examples and embodiments are to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and the invention is not to be limited to the details given herein.
Claims (16)
1. A rail assembly for mounting a server into a cabinet, comprising:
a rail bracket adapted to be mounted in a sidewall of the cabinet;
an outer rail movably received in the bracket, the outer rail comprising a blocking member formed therein; and
an inner rail adapted to be attached to one side of the server and movably received in the outer rail, the inner rail comprising an acting member formed therein engaging with the blocking member of the outer rail for moving the outer rail outward together with the inner rail such that the server can be fully drawn out of the cabinet without the outer rail detaching from the rail bracket.
2. The rail assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the inner rail comprises a first base plate and two guiding flanges formed at two opposite sides of the first base plate.
3. The rail assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the outer rail comprises a second base plate, two guiding portions formed at two opposite sides of the second base plate, and two first railings parallel to and offset from the guiding portions respectively.
4. The rail assembly as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the acting member of the inner rail is a protrusion formed in one of the guiding flanges, and the blocking member comprises a slot defined in the second base plate of the outer rail corresponding to the protrusion of the inner rail.
5. The rail assembly as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the acting member of the inner rail is a tab formed in the first base plate, and the blocking member is a blocking plate formed in the second base plate of the outer rail corresponding to the tab of each inner rail.
6. The rail assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the rail bracket comprises a first part, and a second part adjustably connected with the first part by fastening means.
7. A server assembly adapted to be mounted in a cabinet, comprising:
a pair of rail brackets mounted in two sidewalls of the cabinet respectively;
a server; and
a pair of rails attached to opposite sides of the server and slidably received in the rail bracket respectively;
wherein the server can be fully moved out of the cabinet without the rails detaching from the rail brackets.
8. The server assembly as claimed in claim 7 , wherein each of the rails comprises an inner rail and an outer rail slidable relative to the inner rail.
9. The server assembly as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the outer rail has a blocking member provided therein, and the inner rail has an acting member provided therein.
10. The server assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the inner rail comprises a first base plate and two guiding flanges formed at two opposite sides of the first base plate.
11. The server assembly as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the outer rail comprises a second base plate, two guiding portions formed at two opposite sides of the second base plate, and two first railings parallel to and offset from the guiding portions respectively.
12. The server assembly as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the acting member of the inner rail is a protrusion formed in one of the guiding flanges, the blocking member comprises a slot defined in the second base plate of the outer rail corresponding to the protrusion of the inner rail.
13. The server assembly as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the acting member of the inner rail is a tab formed in the first base plate, and the blocking member is a blocking plate formed in the second base plate of the outer rail corresponding to the tab of the inner rail.
14. The server assembly as claimed in claim 7 , wherein each of the rail brackets comprises a first part and a second part adjustably connected with the first part by fastening means.
15. A server assembly comprising:
a pair of rail brackets mounted to two opposite side walls of a cabinet, each of said brackets including relatively moveable front and rear parts so as to be adjustably mounted to the corresponding side walls;
a first rail moveably received in each corresponding rail bracket;
a second rail moveably received in each corresponding first rail; and
a server including two opposite side faces, to each of which the corresponding second rail is attached; wherein
during withdrawal of the server from the cabinet, the second rail initially moves outwardly relative to the corresponding first rail and via a first abutment structure successively urges the corresponding first rail to commonly outwardly move; during insertion of the sever into the cabinet, the second rail initially moves inwardly relative to the corresponding inner rail and via a second abutment structure successively urges the corresponding first rail to commonly move inwardly; whereby
the server is allowed to be withdrawn outwardly with more exposed portions under a stable manner.
16. The server assembly as claimed in claim 15 , wherein said first rail is moveably received in the front part of the corresponding rail bracket.
