GREETING CARD Filed Jan. 13. 1932 FIG I;
l N VEN TOR:
911 Good Wishes for the New Year Patented Oct. 23, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GREETING CARD ration of Maryland Application January 13, 1932, Serial No. 586,352
1 Claim.
This invention relates to greeting cards such greeting cards with ornamented fronts constructed from metal foil.
As exemplified in my co-pending application, Serial No. 503,618, filed on December 20, 1930, now Patent No. 1,850,857, granted March 22,
1932, cards of the kind specifically referred to have been made heretofore with openings in their fronts through which were exposed surfaces of paper or the like for application of either printed or hand written inscriptions.
The object of my present invention is to make it possible, to print or write upon the fronts of the cards, without necessity for resorting to the relatively complicated window opening construction featured in my previous application. This desideratum I secure as hereinafter fully explained, by leaving the metal foil front of the card intact, and applying either over the entire surface of the front, or upon portions thereof, a coating of paint or the like which is receptive In the drawing, Fig. I shows the front of a greeting card conveniently embodying the present improvements; and
Fig. II shows a longitudinal sectional view of 0 the card taken as indicated by the arrows 11-11 in Fig. I.
As herein delineated, my improved card comprises a front 3 made from paper-backed metal foil which may be of copper, aluminum, brass, gold, silver, or any relatively ductile metal; and a back 4 of stiff paper or cardboard, the two parts of the card being permanently secured together by pasting or gluing. The paper backing 6 for the metal foil 7 is secured by means of a layer of paste or glue conventionally indicated at 9, and. it may initially carry the paste or glue 10 by which the back 4 of the card is permanently 0 attached to the front 3.
As shown at 11 in Fig. I, the front of the card is in the present instance ornamented by an embossed design, there being a plain fiat area 12 in the midst of the embossment.
In carrying out my invention, I apply to the flat area 12 of the card front, a suitable coating 13 of paint or the like which is receptive to printed inscriptions such as shown at 14, as well as to personal inscriptions made in ink by hand. 7 The low spots of the embossed areas may be covered with the same coating as is used in the plain area 12, or With a-coating of contrasting color, depending upon the design as well as upon the effect desired in the finished card; and the high 7 spots of the embossment may be polished to contrast with the different colors employed in the low spots.
The specific ornamentation herein shown and described by way of example, is of course to be considered as typical only of many other types within the skill of artificers in metal, and to which resort may be had for the purposes of diversification within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
As an article of manufacture, a greeting card provided with a facing of metal foil thereon having a flat area coated with material receptive to printing or hand-writing, and ornamented around such area with embossing raised above the flat area and polished.
