so that the needle and thread does not go through the brim in a manner to be exposed on the top side thereof, as is usually the case in the manufacture of straw hats.
I preferably not only flange or extend the edge portion of the sweat band out under the brim away from the critical point, so to speak, the junction of the crown and brim, but I provide additional preventative means intermediate of *55 the sweat band and the hat body to prevent any vperspiration 'which might possibly work through Vthe leather-'from `contacting with-the h-atbody "and hat brim.
The vinvention accordingly consistsin the 'features of construction and arrangement-of/parts which will ybel exemplied 1in the illustrations hereinafter'described and-the scopeof the application of which willbe indicated in thefollow- 'ing claims.
In the accompanying Adrawing in `which lis shown one orfmorel possible embodiments of my e invention,
Fig. lshows abottom plan Viewof .a 'felthat .having one ofumy improved sweatlbandsattach'ed thereto Fig.-2 isla vertical cross sectional View, broken away, .through one side of .the hat shown-'inFig '1; `Fig.`.3 isa fragmentary perspective View of-fa portion ofthe exposedmemberoffthe sweat band 'shown l in Fig.' 2; and
iFig. 4 shows; asectional viewthroughtheband lportionof la hat `somewhat like that shown -in Fig.. 2, though comprising a modified assemblage.
.In the'old method o'fattachingsweat leathers or .sweat bands fto felt hats, the perspiration v"from ythe wearer would work down tothe line of stitches along its lowerV edge portion, which f in'V turn would serve as la wick to conduct lthe perspiration throughthe needle holes to the felt-bodylin'a .way .todampen and. soil the samemore: orless `accordfingfto .theamount of yperspiration and `the conditions under whichthehat-was worn. Lhave now devised a perspirationwproof sweatband, 1 as twill now'be referred to in detailfhaving an outwardly disposed annular flange vextended from itslower portion `which serves-to protect @both :the inner .wall "of the band portion and .theiunderawallor surface of the brimito'alimitedextent 'suilicient `to prevent :the .perspiration from-working across 4the'ilange and onto thebrim.
Referring in'. detail to the: characters of Areference marked upon the drawing, 5 represents the top of the crown of a felt hat, 6 the annular side wall of the crown, and 'l the brim. In this connection it will be understood that the hat as well as the brim may be formed of any suitable material, as for instance fur, and may be of any preferred style or shape, as the object of the invention is to protect all types of hats wherein the perspiration is liable to penetrate and soil the band and brim portion of the body. 8 represents the band portion of the hat body which, in this instance for clearness, is not shown as being provided with a hat band.
9 represents the outer annular member of my improved sweat band which may be formed of leather or other suitable material, and has its lower edge portion deflected outward to form an annular flange 10 which conforms to the shape of the inner wall of the side crown and the underface of the brim, the said member being secured to the brim by having its outer annular edge portion 11 sewed to the outer layer of fur of the underface of the brim without allo-wing the threads 12 to extend through to the top side, and whereby the said threads are carried over the outer annular edge of the flange in a way to draw it in against the brim and form a neat finish to the underside of the brim.
Next adjacent to the inner side of this annular iianged member 9, I provide an intermediate band of absorbent material 13 such as felt, cotton or the like, and between it and the hat body I also provide a strip of oiled silk, rubber or other waterproofing material 1li, as shown in Fig. 2, which like the outer member 9 and absorbent material 13, includes a flange 15, the edge 16 of which is sewed in between the edge 11 of the outer member and the underface of the hat brim, and whereby any dampness which may penetrate the member 9 will contact with and be distributed by the vabsorbent material 13, thus lessening its possible damaging effect on the hat body. With the inclusion of water-proof material 14 between the absorbent material and the hat body, all possibility of the soiling of the latter is eliminated.
In Fig. i I have shown a form of sweat band embodying my invention which includes 'the flanged strip of absorbent material 13 positioned between a folded strip of leather or other suitable material comprising the outer flanged member 9a and the inner flanged member 14e, which in this instance are formed of the one piece, and folded longitudinally to form the closed annular upper edge portion l'I. In this case, this latter mentioned portion 14a would preferably be coated with a non-absorbent material such as rubber, cellophane or the like, and in this comiection I secure the raw edge portions of the three layers together, as at 18, by cement or a line of stitching, the threads of which would be treated with waterproof material to prevent absorption of perspiration which may come in contact therewith.
This ensemble, thus produced, represents a commercial article of manufacture which may either be made up or purchased by hat manufacturers and by them stitched into hat bodies by a shallow form of stitching. rials as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, are somewhat eX- aggerated for the sake of clearness.
In addition to the protective qualities of the sweat band herein described, it will also be seen that a very much more comfortable hat to wear is produced, and one that will set closer to the head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The thicknesses of the mate- 1. In combination, a hat including a crown and brim portion, an outer annular band positioned within the crown and having an outwardly disposed annular ange conforming to the under surface of the brim, an inner strip of absorbent material also having an outwardly disposed annular flange and positioned between the outer annular band and the body of the hat, the edges of the flanges being sewed to the under face of the brim by stitches passing through the flanges, over the edges, and through the underface of the brim in a manner to not show on the top surface of the brim.
2. In combination, a hat including a crown and brim portion and an annular outer band positioned within the crown and having an outwardly disposed annular liange conforming to the undersurface of the brim, the edge of the flange being sewed to the underface of the brim by stitches passing through the flange, over the edge, and through the underfaoe of the brim in a manner to not show-on the top surface of the brim, and a flanged water-proof protective member inter- .mediate the hat body and outer band having its outer edge portion secured between the underface of the brim and the flanged portion of the sweat band and secured by the stitches attaching the outer band to the brim.
3. In combination, a hat including a crown and brim portion and an annular outer band positioned within the crown and having an outwardly disposed annular ange conforming to the undersurface of'the brim, the edge of the flange being sewed to the underfaceof vthe brim by stitches passing through the flange, over the edge, and through the under-face of the brim in a manner not to show on the-top surface of the brim, a strip of absorbent material adjacent the said band and a strip of water-proof material between the absorbent material and the hat body and having its outer edge portions secured between the underface of the brim and the iianged portion of the outer band, and secured by the stitches attaching the outer band to the hat.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a sweat band comprising'a strip of-absorbent material and a strip of water proof material, each Vhaving an outwardly disposed annular flange portion to conform to the undersurface of a hat brim, the edges of said flanges being secured together to lform an assembled sweat band adapted to be set into a hat.
