Description

E. GOODMAN 'S SANITARY UNDERGARMENT' LADY Filed Jan. 18, 1933 v u a a r I I I v I In INVENTOR GOOD/14AM BY Y ATroRNEYls Patented Aug. 28, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1,971,558 LADYS SANITARY UNDERGARMENT Emily Goodman, New York, N. Y.
Application January 18, 1933, Serial No. 652,287
4 Claims. (01. 128-288) This invention relates to improvements in garments" and more particularly to ladies sanitary undergarments.
The primary object of the invention resides in 5 a form fitting ladies undergarment for covering the lower part of the body and upper thighs of a wearer, and in which is embodied, a means for supporting a sanitary napkin whereby the use of sanitary belts may be dispensed with durin m menstrual periods.
Another feature of the invention'is to provide a-combination ladies undergarment and sanitary napkin holder which may be worn at all times with assured comfort to the wearer, and which 15 from outwardappearances resembles a conventional undergarment.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a ladies undergarment having attaching tabs supported therein at the front and rear to go which the ends of a sanitary napkin may be attached, the garment being so reinforced that any pull or strain upon the tabs due to the body movements of the wearer is from the hips of the wearer and not from the waist. Thus the garg5 ment which is supported from the wa st will not work downward upon the wearer but remain in an adjusted position to support the napkin in proper position at all times.
A further object is to provide a combination o sanitary garment in which the napkin is supported in a manner to eliminate bulkiness and pomible detection when worn beneath tight fitting outer garments.
A. still further object is to provide a garment 35 having the above feature which is strong and durable, easy to put on and take off, convenient for the changing of napkins, and free' of any snap fasteners or other week fastening devices which might give way under strain while the garment 4 isinuse.
with these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essen- 1 features of which are hereinafter'fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my sanitary undergarment. so Figure 2 is a rear elevational view of the same. Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional'view therethrough showing the outline of a woman's body and a sanitary napkin in dot and dash lines.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view looking toto ward the front of the garment.
acters, the-numeral designates my improved Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but looking toward the rear of the garment.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the napkin attaching tabs and its support.
Referring to the drawing by reference charundergarment in its entirety which in the drawing is shown as being of the panty or step-in type, although other styles of undergarment worn to cover the lower portion of the body and upper thighs of a wearer may be used in conjunction with the invention now to be explained. .The garment 10 comprises a pair of front sections 1111 stitched together as defined by the seam 12. The front sections 11-11 are provided with 70 extension portions 1313 stitched together to form a seam 14. The extension portions 13-13 are looped to form a crotch portion 15 andthe said extensions are stitched to the spaced ad-.- jacent edges of a pair of rear or back sections 7 16-16 at the seams 17-17. The front and rear sections 11 and 16 are stitched together at their outer side edges at the seams 18, while a placket extends inwardly from the top edge of the garment at the left side and is closed by a hook 3 and eye connection 19. a g The rearwardly extending portions 13-13 te'rminate adjacent the top edge of the garment and interposed between the spaced rear sections 16-16 at the waist band are elastic straps or 35 inserts 20. The expansion of these elastic inserts is limited by a flexible non-elastic tape 21 stitched to the adjacent edges of the sections 16'16 and which tape is normally provided with a slack to enable expansion or stretching of the garment at the waist portion but which serves to restrict or limit such expansion.
From, the description thus far, a garment of the panty or step-in type has been described which is provided with leg openings 22, and a waist encircling portion 23 whereby the garment when in worn position upon a wearer, is supportedfrom the wearers waist. The garment may be donned or removed by the opening of the placket closed by the hook and eye connection 19. The elastic insert serves to snugly hold the garment about the waist of the wearer.
Stitched to the front sections 11-11 and the rear sections 16-16 of the garment are sets of diagonally disposed non-elastic tapes 24 and 25 respectively. These tapes extend downwardly from the hip portion of the garment in convergving relation and the tapes of each set terminate in spaced relation to each other. The lower ends of the tapes 25 terminate at the scams 1'! as best seen in Figure 5 of the drawing. Secured at the lower end of the sets of tapes'25 and 26 are sets of upwardly converging elastic straps 26 and to which fabric tabs 27 are connected, the said tabs 5 having openings or holes 28 provided therein. Thus it will be seen that attaching tabs 27 are provided within the garmentat the front and rear thereof to which a sanitary napkin such as shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 of the drawing at 29 may be pinned or if desired the ends of the napkin may be inserted through the openings 28 and tied. a
When forming the gusset consisting of the extension portions 13, the same is so constructed as to produce a fullness sufficient to compensate for the rear attaching tab 27 so that when the garment is in a worn position upon a wearer, the impression of the tab or connection of the sanitary napkin will not be visible from the outside of the garment. v
For the convenience of adjusting the napkin 29, the sides of the garment are provided with slits or openings 29' whereby the wearer may reach into the garment without lowering or removing the same.
When a sanitary napkin is in position and the garment is upon a wearer, the wearer isassured of free body movements, and any strain or pull due to such movements upon the tabs 27 is compensated for by reason of the elastic straps 26. The garment is also relieved of the strain of pull due to .the fact that the reinforcing strips extend to the hip portion of the garment and the pull is upon the hips of the wearer rather than upon the waist portion of the garment. Th s the body movements will not tend to cause the garment to work downward upon the body of the wearer. After the garment is once ad- Justed together with the sanitary napkin supported thereby, the same will remain in such adjusted position.
wherein I have shown and described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, I wish itto be understood that such changes as come within the scope of the appendedclaims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: 1. In combination, a garment for covering the lower body and upper thighs of a wearer having .u I i means whereby the same may be supported from the waist of the wearer, sets of diagonally arranged strips stitched to the front and rear of said garment, and extending upwardly to the opposite hip portions thereof, and napkin attaching tabs yieldingly supported from the lower ends of said strips.
2. In combination, a ladies undergarment adapted to be supported from the waist of a wearer having means whereby the same may be supported from the waist of a wearer, sets of diagonal reinforcing tapes stitched to the front and rear of said garment on the inside thereof, the upper ends of said tapes extending to the opposite hip portions of said garment, elastic elements secured to the lower ends of said tapes, and sanitary napkin attaching tabs suspended from said elastic elements. 4
3. In combination, a ladies undergarment closed at the front and rear and adapted to be supported from the waist of a wearer and having leg portions, the leg portions being slit at the sides thereof to enable the interior of the undergarment to be reached from the outside thereof when in worn position upon a wearer, front and rear napkin attaching tabs, means yieldably supporting said attaching tabs within the undergarment at the front and rear thereof and accessible by reaching through the slits in the leg portions for the at-. tachment of a sanitary napkin thereto and for the removal of a sanitary napkin therefrom without disturbing the wearing position of the garment upon the wearer, and means for transmitting any strain upon said first means to the hip portions of said undergarment.
4. In combination, a ladies undergarment of the panty or step -in style having a waist encircling portion and leg portions, the leg portions being split at their sides upwardly from their lower edges .to enable access to the interior of the undergarll ment from the outside when in worn position upon a wearer, sets of diagonal tapes stitched to the front and rear of said garment on the inside thereof, the upper ends of each set of tapes extending to the opposed hip portions of the undergarment 129 between the upper ends of said slits and the waist encircling portion, while the lower ends of each set terminate in spaced relation, and napkin at- 'taching tabs yieldingly supported by the lower spaced ends of the respective sets of tapes. 12o
