UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT Gr. MAOKINNEY, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN GEM-SETTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 195,765, dated October 2, 1877; application led February 10, 1877.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT G. MACKIN- NEY, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new or Improved Gein-Setting; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specication and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Y Figure lis a top view, Fig. 2 a bottomview, Fig. 3 a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of it on an enlarged scale.
It is composed of a series of duplex tapering jaws, a, a base-ring, b, and an inner connectionring, c, arranged as represented, and soldered together at their point-s of contact.
The jaws Vat their lower ends rest on the base-ring, above which they are notched on their inner edges to receive the connectionring. Each jaw tapers not only longitudinally from its lower to its upper end, but it also tapers transversely, or is triangular in section, as shown. The jaws are arranged at equal distances apart upon the base-ring, as shown.
This setting, made as described, has been found to be very useful, as well as ornamental, for holding a gem or stoneas a real or fictitious diamond, for instance.
The inner edge of each of the jaws, being sharp and inclined to the base-ring, does not reect light to the disadvantage of the stone, and, besides, cannot be seen through it.
The outer edges of the jaws, owing to their thickness, become so many reflectors of light when they are finished, and contribute to the general effect of the jewel.
I claim- As a new or improved manufacture, the described geln-setting, composed ofthe series of duplex tapering jaws and the base and connection rings, combined and arranged as set forth.
HERBERT G. MACKINNEY.
