This invention relates to animal holding boxes, and more specifically relates to an improved means for holding a rabbit so that injections may be made in the ear of the rabbit and thereafter 5 the rabbit may be asphyxiated.

It is a well known fact that the holding of a rabbit, and particularly the head of the rabbit, so that injections may be made in the ear of the rabbit is rendered difficult by reason of the struggles of the animal, and it is the broad purpose of my invention to provide a means which will not only hold the body of the rabbit but also the head of the rabbit against undue movement, and facilitate injections in the ear of the rabbit.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all of which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating a modification.

1 represents a box or receptacle of general somewhat elongated shape, preferably oblong in longitudinal section and rectangular in cross section, although, of course, the invention is not limited to the exact shape of the box or receptacle, as this can be varied to suit the trade. The top of the box is normally closed by a sliding cover 2 which has a recess 3 at its inner end cooperating with a recess 4 in a fixed portion 5 of the box top, to form an opening to accommodate the neck of a rabbit, illustrated by the reference character 6.

The cover 2 is adapted to slide freely in the box and may have metal strips 7 fixed to the box top and overlying the cover to prevent upward movement of the cover. Furthermore, the cover is capable of adjustment so as to allow for the accommodation of rabbits of diiferent sizes having diiierent diameters of necks. A simple means of adjustment is illustrated in which the cover is formed with a longitudinal series of openings 8, any of which are adapted to register with a socket 9 in the end of the box, and a removable pin 10 can be positioned in any of the openings 8 and in the socket 9 to secure the cover in closed position.

An important feature of my invention is the provision of a hood or guard 11 which is movably or removably connected to the box top and which holds the head of the animal against undue movement. This hood or guard may consist of a tapering arch 11, as illustrated in the drawing, and in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing I show this arch 11 as having flanges 12 at its edges adapted to slide in guides 13 secured to the box top so that this guard or hood may be positioned on the box or removed therefrom. Guides 13 may be secured to the box top by means of tacks or screws 13 as indicated in Figures 1,

2 and 3 of the drawing.

In the modification illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, a hood or guard 14, corresponding to the hood or guard 11, has flanges 15 at its edges, one of the flanges being pivotally connected to the box top by means of a screw 16, and the other flange 15 having a keyhole-shaped slot 17 therein to receive a headed screw 18 so that the guard may be located either in operative position over the opening formed by the recesses 3 and 4 or it may be freed from the screw 18 and swung to one side, as indicated by '80 the dotted lines in Figure 4.

It is to be understood that the hood or guard is in position to hold the head of the rabbit only when injections are made in the ears of the rabbit, but to chloroform or otherwise asphyxiate the rabbit this guard is in the way of a cup which is ordinarily used for chloroforming, and hence it is desired that the hood or guard be either removed or swung out of the way. After rabbits have been injected for a certain length of time-9o they are chloroformed and an autopsy made to determine the results; hence, my improved animal holder not only functions to effectively hold the rabbit against movement during the injection, but also can be utilized effectively when chloroforming the rabbit.

While I have referred to the animal as a rabbit it is obvious that the device can be utilized for holding various types of animals, and various slight changes may be made in the form and arrangement of parts without departing from my invention; hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.

What I claim is:

1. A device of the character described including a box adapted to receive the body of an animal, the top wall of said box adjacent the end no of the box having a recess therein, a movable cover on the box having a recess in its end cooperating with the first named recess to accommodate the neck of the animal, with the head of the animal outside of the box, and a movable guard or hood connected to the box adapted to receive and hold the head of the animal.

2. A device of the character described including a box adapted to receive the body of an animal, the top wall of said box adjacent the end of the box having a recess therein, a movable cover on the box having a recess in its end cooperating with the first named recess to accommodate the neck of the animal, with the head of the animal outside of the box, and a movable guard or hood connected to the box adapted to receive and hold the head of the animal, said hood or guard being of tapering form longitudinally and arched form transversely.

3. A device of the character described including a box adapted to receive the body of an animal, the top Wall of said box adjacent the end of the box having a recess therein, a movable cover on the box having a recess in its end cooperating with the first named recess to accommodate the neck of the animal, with the head of the animal outside of the box, a movable guard or hood connected to the box adapted to receive and hold the head of the animal, means on the box movably supporting the hood so that the latter may be moved to a position to expose the head of the animal.

4. A device of the character described including a box adapted to receive the body of an animal, the top Wall of said box adjacent the end of the box having a recess therein, a movable cover on the box having a recess in its end cooperating with the first named recess to accommodate the neck of the animal, with the head of the animal outside of the box, and a movable guard or hood connected to the box adapted to receive and hold the head of the animal, and means for adjustably securing the cover so as to vary the size of the opening to accommodate the neck of the animal.

5. A device of the character described including a box adapted to receive the body of an animal, the top wall of said box adjacent the end of the box having a recess therein, a movable cover on the box having a recess in its end cooperating with the first named recess to accommodate the neck of the animal, with the head of the animal outside of the box, a movable guard or hood connected to the box adapted to receive and hold the head of the animal, said cover having a longitudinal series of openings, a single opening in the box, and a removable pin adapted to be positioned in one of the openings in the cover and registering with the opening in the box to secure the cover in adjusted position.
