9 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved treadle operated waste receptacle, an object of the invention being to provide such a device that may be opened, closed, and emptied conveniently and 5 wtithout soiling the hands or fingers of the opera or. l Another object is tor provide a device of the character` above described comprising a decorative outer container and an insertible service pail l or container, each of which has a lid or cover for completely closing the containers and confining the odors of the contents thereof.
Another object is to provide a simple and inexpensive means in connection with a device of l the above character, whereby the lids may be actuated simultaneously by merely depressing a foot operated treadle, it being unnecessary to at anytime grasp with the lingers any soiled or dirty parts of the device.
20 Another object is the provision of a disinfecting attachment on the lid of the inner pail or container.
These and' other objects are attainedgby the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-sectional View of the waste receptacle of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View on a reduced scale taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail exploded perspective View showing a novel means employed for effecting movement of the container lids or covers in unison.
The device of this invention comprises an outer container 5 open at its top for reception of an linner container or waste receptacle 6. The inner n receptacle has a bottomr' provided with flanges 8 adapted to rest upon one or more cross bars 9A riveted orotherwise secured to the wall of the outer container. AtV the location indicated at 10, there is hingedly mountedupon the top edge 12 -of the inner container a cover or lid 13 having a peripheral bead 14 adapted to seat within anV annular recess V15 of the inner container for Veffecting a seal between the cover and the inner container. The annular recess preferably is bounded by a peripheral bead 16 which encloses a suitable reinforcing wire. Pivotally mounted at opposite sides of the inner container, as at 17, there is provided a suitable bail orrigid wire handlel whereby the' receptacle 6 mayibe lifted bodily from its position -in the container or protective casing 5. The rigid wire handle is o! such shape and size that theportion 19 inter mediate the endsl thereof rests'upon the top `of the bead 16. The intermediate portion 19 thereby is rendered readily accessible while the inner container is in position within the casing 5.
The outer container or casing 5 has hingedly mounted, at 20 an outer lid or cover 21 having 60 preferably a concave inner face 22. A peripheral bead 23 extends about the rim of the cover, whereby to provide an annular depression 24 adapted to rest upon the upper peripheral bead 25 of the outer container for the purpose of pro- 65 viding a suitable joint between the cover and the container. TheA hinge connection at 20 is by means of a hinge member 26 welded or otherwise secured tothe lid and provided with a suitable angle member 27 cotter pinned or otherwise piv- 70 otally mounted upon a bracket 218 fixed upon the outer face 29 of the casing 5. A second angle bracket 30 is secured to the cover 271, at a'short distance from the hinge 20, whereby connection may be made by means of a connecting rod 31 for 75 treadle operation of the outer cover or lid.
The treadle member 32 may be fulcrumed at 33 upon the piece 9 and it may have at its outer end an enlarged foot piece 34 whereby the treadle member may be moved about its fulcrum by the application of an operators foot. Any suitable hinge connection may be made between the treadle member and the connecting rod 3,1, as indicated at 35. From the foregoing it should readily be apparent that downward movement of vthe foot piece 34 initiates a vertical rupward movement of the connecting'rod 31 which, by
means of its connection at 30, may lift the lid 21 until it assumes a nearly vertical position.
In order that refuse or the like may be placed in the inner receptacle after application of force to the foot piece, a suitable connection is provided between the cover 21 and the cover`13. This connection preferably is made by means of a rotatable spindle 36 having at its lower end a latch piece 42 engageable with a keeper 60, and at its upper end a finger piece or handle 37 whereby the spindle may conveniently be rotated. Between the handle and the lower end 38 of the spindle is fixed a bearing plate member 39 which may be in the form of a disc that normally is held, by means of a spring 61, in abutment'upon the top face of cover 21. The plate 39 andv cover 21 are provided with means for holding the spindle in adjusted positions so that accidental movement thereof vto the latched or unlatched positions is effectively prevented. Such means may comprise a series of openings or depressions 40 formed in the under face of the plate 39, which depressions are adapted to vengage upwardly extending humpsor projections 41 on the cover.' The humps or projections 41 may readily be formed by stamping them` into the material of the cover. The elements 40 and 41 are so spaced and related that they will register with one another upon each quarter turn of the spindle. It will readily be understood that it is immaterial Whether the cover or the plate 39 carries the humps or projections, the alternative structure being well within the scope of the present invention.
The spindle 36, before the placing of the cotter pin 62 and latch piece 42, is inserted through the opening 63 in the cover, then a suitable spring 61 is applied to the spindle and held in place by the cotter pin 62 or any othei suitableabutment member. This affords a yielding engagement to the elements 40 and 41. Thereafter the latch piece 42 is applied to the spindle. Both the latch piece and the cotter pin are extended through holes drilled transversely through the spindle, as `is/readily apparent by reference to the drawings.
The keeper 60 comprises a bridgelikemember secured to the top of the inner cover 13 by any suitable means such as spot welds 64, and it is provided with an elongated slot 65 wide enough to admit the spindle 36, only when the latch piece 42 is disposed longitudinally of the slot. When lthe spindle is rotated to dispose the latch piece Ytransversely of the slot 65, the latch piece abuts the under face of the keeper Vand precludes detachment thereof from the keeper so that when the pedal 39 is depressed for raising the outer cover 21, the inner cover will move therewith. The slot 65 is made elongated in order to permit such relative movement of the covers as results from the spaced apart relationship of the cover hinges, i. e., the spindle moves along the slot when the covers are moved, in unison, to the raised and lowered positions. vThe keeper and the latch piece are disposed diametricallyy opposite their respective hinges, and the elongated slot65 is on that diame- .terof the cover 13 whichincludes the hinge 10 and the keeper 60.
Means are provided for maintainingthe keeper and latch piece in alignment while the cans are nested. Said means may comprise an extending lug 66 on the -inner can which lug is adapted to f rest within a recess 67 formed in the outer can.
The recess may be formed in any suitable manner such as by cutting away a portion of the bead on can, 5 as illustrated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it should readily lbe under# stood that actuation of the treadle effects normally a lifting of both lids or covers, thereby permit-v ting waste or refuse to be inserted withinithe receptacle 6, and that should it be desired to bodily remove the receptacle 6 thelid 21 may readily be detached from the lid 13 without soiling the fingers or hands. It should be noted thatthe inner lid,'as well as the outer lid, provides a 'tight closure whereby any odors peculiar to the contents of the'innerireceptacle are confined therein. If desired, the inner lid 13 may be provided with a depression 45 and a suitable cap 46 which together afford a means for reception cfa suitable disinfecting material 47. The cap may be` provided with a ller opening 48,'and the depressed portion 45 may have formed therein a series of openings 49 for dissemination of the disinfectant.
From the disclosure in Fig. 1, it will be noted that opposite ends of the treadle member 32 ex-V treadle member is provided an abutting portion 53 which is adapted to strike the bottom or lower end 54 of the inner container for slight projection'of the container upwardly upon the application of sufficient force to the foot piece 34. The slight upward movement of the inner container serves to move the handle 18 to a slightly elevated position, which renders it easily grasped for removal of the inner container from the casing 5. The foregoing may be accomplished by extending the uppermost wall 55 of the slot 51 to a position labove the abutment 54 of container 6. An alterktacle and its lid together providing a sealed chamber for receiving refuse, a latch connection between the lids to provide for quick detachment thereofvone from the other, foot operated means for conjointly raising and lowering both lids, and means for precludingrelative rotation of the lids one to the other.
