.A particular object of this invention is to provide an improved sandal in which the upper or vamp portion is made of straps constructed of textile material and in which the straps will be so constructed so that 'their edges will be non-fraying in character.
A further obj ect of this invention is to provide an improved sandal' having the upper or vamp portion made of a series of inter- This invention relates to improvements in locked or interlacing straps in which the straps are all of non-raying construction and may-be made with a minimum of expense.
Further objects of the invention will be 'apparent from Vthe specification and drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a new and improved sandal embodying my'invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of aportion of y one ofthe individual straps used in the sandal shown in Fig. 1, showingthe method ofmakinsaid individual straps.
- ig. 8 is a cross-sectional view along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
10 is the sole of the sandal, 11 is the heel and 12 is the counter having the strap portion 13. 14 designates the individual each having the outer and upper layer 15 and the reinforcement 1,6 with turned-over edges 17. 18 indicates the lines' of stitches joining the upper member 15 to the lower member 16. ,v
The straps 14 are joined to the sole 10 in any improved manner and the method by which they are connected to the `sole forms no part of myinventio I prefer to use a textile strip with a selvage or ribbon edge for the upper layer of the strap, as the use of such a strip results in great economy of production and 'gives a finished strap-with edges non-fraying in con` struction and ofpleasng appearance.
It has hitherto been the ,e'ustom to make such straps (but not for use in making a shoe) from sheet fabric. from which the strips 15have been cut by hand or have been stamped by means of dies. Where strips of straps,
with ribbon'edges.
The strips "15 are formed with selvages, vso that their edges are non-raveling and of single thickness. i #For reinforcement 'in the straps 14 shown herein, I emplo7 a rubberized fabric cut into appropriate strips with turnedsover edges,"
17, and are sewn to the upper layerV 15 as shown in the drawing.
Changes may be made in the form of reinforcement used and in the'method of attaching same tothe upper layer 15, and other changes may be made in the form of the con- `struction of these straps 14 without departing l from the spirit of my invention. What I claim 1. A shoe or the like having a sole and a. vamp` portion, said vamp portion comprising so a series Of independent straps which loosely cross each other and which are connected toi said sole ,at separated pointsthereof, said straps comprising upper layers of textile material having selvaged edges of substan` tially the same thickness vas the body portions thereof. said straps having reinforcing members applied wholly to their under faces,
said reinforcing members having longitudinal inturned edges which labut the under faces of said textile layers.
2. A shoe or the like'having a sole and a vamp portion, said vamp portion comprising a series of independent straps which loosely cross each other and which are connected to said sole at separated points thereof. said straps comprising upperlayers of textile material having selvaged edges of substantially the same thickness as the body portions'thereof, said straps having reinforcing these strips 16 of rubberized fabric members applied wholly to their under faces, said reinforcing members having longitudinal inturned edges which abut the under n faces of 'said textile layers', the width of a. 5 reinforcing member being substantially the i same as that of the associated upper layer.
3. A shoe or the like having a sole and a vamp portion, said vampfportion comprising a series of independent straps which loosely cross eachother and which are connected to said sole at separated points thereof, said straps comprising upper layers of'textile material ,having selvaged edges of substantially the same thickness as the body portions thereof,'said straps having reinforcing members applied Whollyto their under faces, said reinforcing members having longitudinal inturned edges which abut the under faces of said textile layers, said reinforcing members being made of rubberized fabric.
Inytestimony whereof, ll aix my signature.
