Description

E. RUHLMANN.
DEVICES FOR A-TTACHING LAMPS-T0 BAND INSTRUMENTS. I No. 132,855,. Patented Oct. 3, 1876.

EUGENE RUHLMANN, OF LOOKPORT, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN DEVICES FOR ATTACHING LAMPS T0 BAND INSTRUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,855, dated October 3, 1876; application filed July 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EUGENE RUHLMANN, of Lockport, in the county'of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a Serenade-Lamp Attachment for Band Instrumerits; and I do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to an improved lamp attachment for band instruments; and
it consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will hereinafter more fully appear, and then be pointed out in the claims.
In the hereinbeforementioned drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal front, elevation.
Like letters of reference indicate similar parts in both figures.
A is the reservoir. B is the burner, screwed into the top of reservoir A, and provided with a contracted ring, 0, whose neck is provided with a female screw, into which fits the lower part of the globe H. 4
Attached to the ring 0 is a bracket, K, to which is removably attached a reflector, D, by means of a socket, N. O is a band interposed between the globe H and the flaring part of the ring 0. It is provided with two brackets, l? P, placed diametrically opposite, to serve as means of attachment of the bail Q. This bail is provided with a pivot, R, engaging with a socket, S, attached to a slender steel rod, T. U is a clamping-socket, having a passage for the rod T, and provided with an opening, V, by means of which it is attached to that part of a brass instrument into which either the crook or the mouth-piece is inserted. X is a rod, attached to the clamp U, and provided with a sliding socket, Y, into which is inserted the usual music-rack.
The object of my present invention is to provide musical instruments for bands, with means whereby the musician is enabled to read music by night; and this is accomplished by the device heretofore described, which is secured to the instrument by the clamp U. This clamp is provided with a cap, U, secured by means of the thumb-screws u u, and attached to the rod T by means of the fastening-screw t. This clamp serves to suspend the lamp, and also the music sheet or book; and both are so arranged in relation to each other that, by means of the reflector L, the music-sheet can beilluminated, whereby the object in view is attained.
It will be observed that the lamp is pivoted within the bail Q to the brackets P, and the bail in turn secured to the socket S by the pivot B. This arrangement allows the instrument to be'handled without changing the proper position of the lamp.
To enable the reflector D to throw the light upon the proper spot, the lamp is provided with the band 0 in such manner that it will revolve therein, whereby the position of said reflector is rendered adjustable, in conjunction with the set'screw t in the clamp U, which allows the lamp to be elevated and lowered until the rays of light are thrown upon the proper spot.
To secure the lamp, as described, to reed instruments, I change the clamp-socket U into a spring-band, of suitable diameter, having fastening-screws to draw the band tight around said instrument.
The whole lamp is made of brass, German silver, or other suitable material, and made to conform to the instrument in connection with which it is used. Its employment enables a music-band to produce a better class of music than can'otherwise be produced by night when marching through the streets, 860., because it enables the musicians to read their music instead of playing by heart or from memory only.
Having thus described by invention, in order to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, I desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The combination, with a suitable lamp, suspended, substantially as described, of the clamping-socket U, rod T, socket S, and the bail Q, substantially as described, for the purpose stated.
2. The combination, with the bail Qt Socket S, rod T, and clamp U, for supporting the lamp of the rod X, and socket Y, for supinterposed between the globe H and con Attest:

3. The combination, with the bail Q, of the brackets P and the collar 0, said collar being E. RUHLMANN.
tracted ring 0, for adjustably supporting the MICHAEL J. STARK,
lamp, substantially in the manner described. ARBOGAST RUHLMANN.
