HOSE PROTECTOR Filed May 2o. 1929V IN VEN TOR.
Patented Aug. 25, 1931 LEON LOUIS LYONs, OE OMAHA, NEBRASKA f HOSE PROTECTOR Application led May 20, 1929. Serial No. 364,555.
The invention relates to hose protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be easily and quickly placed within a shoe heel upper by sewing or otherwise attaching and provided with sponge rubber members adapted to frictionally engage the stocking heel for preventing movement of the heel of the upper 0n the heel of the wearer thereby obviating damage to the heel of the stocking.
A further object is to provide a pliable member adapted to be sewed or adhesively mounted in the heel of the upper, and forming a carrier or holder for a sponge rubber gripping member for gripping the heel of the stocking.
A further object is to provide a heel protector comprising a pliable member adapted to be secured within the vheel of an upper and provided with sponge rubber members adjacent its ends and positioned to engage opposite sides of the heel of the stocking for gripping said stocking and preventing a rubbing action on the stocking incident to the flexing of the shoe during a walking operac tion.
A further object is to provide a hose provtector comprising a flexible member which may be quickly sewed or glued in the heel '3 of a shoe upper forsubstantially immediate use and provided with a sponge rubber stocking gripping member.
Afurther object is to provide a yhose protector comprising a flexible member adapted 5 to be secured in the heel of the upper of a shoe and having an aperture therein through which extends a stocking gripping member formed from yieldable material.
A further object is to provide a hose pro'- 40 tector comprising a flexible member adapted to be secured in the heel of an upper of a shoe and having an aperture therein through which extends a yieldable stocking gripping member formed from sponge rubber and provided with a flange overlying the rear side of the flexible member and. adhesively secured to said rear side. Y A further obj ect is toincline the elongated gripping members downwardly and outwardly at the ends of the flexible member, whereby when the flexible member is in position arching the rear of the stocking heel, said grlpplng members will present its long dimension at an angle to theupward movement of the s per and will tocking in the heel ofthe upalso fit in the natural depressions in the opposite sides of the heel of the further object is to gripping members from superimposed lay- I form ,the yieldable the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth,
shown in the drawings,
described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings the protector.
Figure 2 is Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe inner side of a perspective view of the protector showing the same bent to form'.v
, Figure 3 1s a vertical transverse sectional view through the heel of' an upper of a shoe and the foot of the wearer.
Figure 4 is a collective perspective view .of the disc from which vthe yieldable member may be formed. `v
Figure 5 is view through from discs.
Referring t a vertical transverse sectional a yieldable member formedV o the drawings, the numeral l the heel 2 of viating the present practice of using a special adhesive for s the shoe upper 3, thereby obecuring rubber gripping members within the heel of the upper as is now common practice, and whichoperatlon prevents the use By providing from leather,
of. the shoe for vmany hours. the flexiblek members formed fabric or other material which sponge rubber.
may be sewed or glued, immediate application is possible.
For purposes of illustration and description the flexible member l is preferably set forth as adhesively secured at y-il to the innerl side of the heel of the upper, Extending through elongated apertures 5 adjacent the ends of the flexible member l are the reduced portions G of gripping members which are preferably formed from sponge rubbe which has been found to have a frictional gripping action of a non-slipping nature on fabric, for instance the heel 7 of a stocking. The sponge rubber members 6 are provided with annular flanges 8 extending around the same, and which flanges are adhesively secured at 9 to the outer side of the flexible member, therefore it will be seen that the flexible members with the gripping members assembled thereon may be sewed as a unit for application within the upper of the shoe. lt will be noted that the gripping members 6 are shown as oval shaped and they incline downwardly and outwardly, therefore it will be seen that when the iexible members are secured within the heel of the upper, the gripping members will ineline downwardly7 and forwardly as shown in Figure 2, and will be disposed at opposite sides of the heel l0 of the wearer where they will register with the depressione ll in opposite sides of the heel for insuring a better gripping operation, and where the bulk of material may be increased without causing discomfort to the foot. The sponge members shown in Figure 3 are shown as formed from a single piece of material, however applicant does not limit himself in this particular, as it is obvious the device could be built up from a plurality of layers of material, vulcanized or otherwise secured together.
Referring to Figures 4 and E) wherein a modified form of gripping member shown, in this form the gripping disc 6a is adapted to be adhesively secured 6b to a second disc 60, larger than the disc 6a and preferably formed from the same material, and from In this particular form it is obvious that the two discs could be cut out by dies and then superimposed and secured together, thereby reducing the cest of manufacture.
From the above it will be seen that a hose protector is provided which is simple in construction, the parts reduced to a minimum, and one wherein the protector is formed from a pliable member which may be secured by stitching or a quick setting adhesive within the upper of a shoe, thereby allowing immediate application of the device to a shoe, which has been one of the drawbacks to devices of this character formed from rubber which requires aspecial cement of a slow setting and drying nature. lt will also be seen that the device is constructed in a manner whereby it grips the stocking at opposite sides of the heel of the wearer, thereby equalizing the strain on the stocking, and at points where there are natural depressions in opposite sides of the heel of the wearer.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A hose gripping device comprising a body member adapted to be received within the heel of a shoe and having an aperture therethrough, said body member being formed from non-stretchable material, a sponge rubber member within said aperture and entirely filling the same, and means for holding said sponge rubber within the aperture in extended position, said means comprising a disc secured to one side of the sponge rubber member and anchored to the outer side of the body inember, and forming means for maintaining the sponge rubber member extended upon transverse movement of a heel in contact therewith.
