EDWARD wrr'roorr, ors'r. Louis, rarssooiar HAT . Application filed August laf aaa Serial Miam This invention relates to hats, and has spe cial reference to ventilating devices for use in connection with hatsto permit circulation of air into and'from the hat when the hat is u worn.
An object of the invention isto provide a hat having a ventilating device comprising an opening through one side of the hat crown, and means supported adjacent to saidopening for stirring or agitating the air passing through said opening into the hat. I
I Another object of the inventionis'to pros vide a hat with a ventilating device comprising an opening in' the crown ofthe hat, and means for varyingthe size of said opening to vary the amount of air that may pass into or from the hat through said opening. 1
Another object of the invention is to pro vide ventilating means for ajhat comprising Q the two devices. or structures previously men-- tioned. I
Other objects will appear from the following description reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a top plan of my improved'hat.
' Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view ofo the" V ventilating device on thejtop of the crown of the hat.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. i
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the ventilat ing device and agitator located at the front of the hat. p
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 64-6 of Fig. 1.
The hat shown comprises a brim 1 and a crown 2 and may be made of any suitable material, whether Woven or felted. The front side of the crown is for d With 195 3 of relatively large diameter and preferably circular. Against the edge of the crown around the opening a ring 3 is secured by projections 4 on the ring passing through the '1 wall of the crown and being clamped or bent around a ring 5 on the inside of the hat. This ring 3 has a number of converging radial arms of spokes 6 united at the center of the ring in an inwardly dished discor hub-7. The arms or spokes 6 are of comparatively narrow idth,v being of only such as is necessaryjto' obtain the required strength. The" disc 7 supports an axial pin 8 on tive agitatoris mounted. Y I
This agitator comprises a plate split radially from a central portion 9 to the periphery of the plate and forming a number of arms whicha rota- 10 bentobliquely to the axis of the pivot Sibut.
not" into contact with the arms or spokesfi.
It is essential that this agitator device,com-
prising the part 9 and the arms 10 radiating therefrorm. be free to rotate by the pressure the crown around which the ring 3 is secured.
The hat may alsojb'e provided with a ventilating device in the top side of the crown of the'air entering the hat through the holefin i and such an'embodiment is shown. In order,
to ventilate through the top of the'crown a; hole is provided over which a thin relatively flat plate 11 is secured by-arms 12 passing through the marginal portion of the crown around the hole and being clamped or hooked upon a'rin'g 113011 the inside ofthe crown. This thin fiat plate 11 iscut to provide a number of holes 14 therethrough'for the admission or; air into vthe crown and the passage of air from the crown. The area of the holes 14 1 and the area'of the intervening portions of the disc are the same. A device for opening and closing the holes 14 is provided,- the samecomprising a central thin flat disc 15 pivoted toothe c enter of thedisc 11 by a pivot l6 andhaving apai'r of thin and relatively fiat-arms 1 17of sufficient width to close theholes 14 or to open said holes completely when placed upon the intervening portion ofthe disc 11. Thisdisc 15 is held-in frictional engagement vwith the disc 11 sothat it will not be turned ofits own accord, or accidentally, but may be adjustments in U the arms 17 are in position to open the holes 14 completely. I
To facilitate manipulation of the disc 15 one of the arms 17 is provided with an outward projection'QO which may be engaged by the finger.
From the foregoing it must be apparent that my invention comprises means for affording'thorough ventilation of a hat when I in connection with the margin of said plate worn. I do not restrict myself to a construction in which both ventilating devices are used, but desire to claim a construction in which eitherorboth ventilators are present. The device may be otherwise Varied without departure from the nature and principle of the invention, I
I donot restrict myself unessentially, but what ;I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A hat comprisinga crown having an opening through the wall thereof, athin and relatively flat plate coveringsaid opening and seated against one surface of the marginal portion of the crown around said opening and having holes communicating with said opening and of approximately the same area as the spacesbetween said holes, arms extending through the marginal portion of the crown around saidopening, a ring seated against the marginal portion of the opposite surface of the crown from said plate and engaged by'said arms, a disc pivotedto the center of said plate, and arms integral with and projecting f'romsaid disc and being of a size to close said holes through said plate in one positionof said arms and to seat upon said plate between saidholes in another position. r r
2. A hat comprising a crown having an inlet opening through one portion thereof and having an outletopening through another portion thereof, a thin and relatively flat plate covering said outlet opening and L having holes communicating with said outlet opening and of approximately the same area as the spaces of said plate between said holes,
fasteners in connection with the marginal portion of said plate extending through the crown around said opening, a ring engaged I by said fasteners on the opposite side of the crown from said plate, a disc seated against said plate between said holes, arms in connection with said disc having an area sufficient to cover said holes respectively, and a pivot extending axially through said disc and through said plate and frictionally holding said disc on said plate and preventing accidental turning of said disc and said arms and permitting turning of said disc and said arms to place said arms over said holes or intermediate of said holes as desired.
