YORK.
Application filed January 20, 1927.
This invention relates to caps or bandages intended for aifording warmth and support to the knee, elbow or shoulder, particularly the knee, its object being to provide an improved device of this nature incorporating certain advantages which will be hereinafter described.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings wherein a Constructional form thereof is illustrated by way of example, Figures l and 2 being respectively views of the device in partly and completely finished states.
rllhe particular form illustrated is a kneecap or cover designed primarily to be worn as a pallative for a rheumatoid condition of the knee. it consists of a blank 1 of suitable material, preferably what is known as shearling, that is, sheepor lamb-skin tanned with the wool on it, or some other natural wool or furcovered skin, although any material or combination of materials having the properties necessary to a device of this nature may be employed, cut to an approximately rectangular shape as illustrated by Fig. 1. Extending from t-he mid-point of each side of the blank to a hole 2 punched in the body of the blank is a slit 3 and cut in each of the corners at one end of the blank is a series of slots 4 to 7. Secured at its sides only, symmetrically over each slit 3 with its apex near the associated hole 2 and its base at the edge of the blank, is a gusset 8 of elastic webbing or similar material and secured at the ends remote from the slots l to 7 are strips or bands 9 of material similar to that employed for the gussets 8.
It will be observed from Fig. 1 that the lower edges of the blank converge slightly and the lower band 9 and the series of slots i to 7 are arranged perpendicular to the convergent edges. This insures that the bands 9 and the series of s lots 4t to 7 will be substantially parallel when the cap is folded and the front portion which covers the patella is belled out as illustrated by Fig. 2.
To secure the cap or bandage in place, it is folded over the knee and the bands 9 passed Serial No. 162,223.
around the leg and passed in and out through the slots 7, 6, 5 and e. `When the bands have been passed through these slots they are drawn to the correct degree of tautness and then folded back and passed in and out 5 through the slots 6 and 7 as illustrated by Fig. 2. Although this method of securing the cap in position is preferred as it permits of any desired degree of adjustment, it is by no means essential as the slots 4 to 7 can be omitted and the bands 9 secured at opposite ends to opposite sides of the blank. With this latter arrangement the cap or bandage would of course be positioned by slipping it over the foot and leg.
As a device constructed in accordance with the present invention incorporates an elastic portion in each of its sides it permits practically unrestricted movement of the joint while insuring that the latter is covered by the device in any position of adjustment it may assume. Further, as the blank is merely slit under the gusset-s 8, no .parts being removed, the gussets themselves at no time contact with the skin of the wearer and as the 75 slits are never extended to any considerable extent no portion of the joint rwhich is normally covered by the cap or bandage is uncovered owing to iexure.
It will be understood that the particular form of the invention herein described is given by way of example only and that other forms may be devised without transgressing the limits of the invention as defined by the succeeding claim.
Claim:
A therapeutic device of the class described comprising a substantially rectangular blank of soft flexible material comprising an outside surface and an inner surface of soft and heat-retaining characteristics, V-shaped cutf outs extending from the edges of the said blank with their apices directed inwardly of the edges of the blank and elastic gussets secured over said cut-outs and acting to cause the edges thereof tobe drawn together to bring the bandage into complete form and also serving to cross the cut-out portions and means for snugly securing said blank to a joint ef the wearer comprising a band of ilexblemateral and a plurality of slits formed in the material blank through which Jshe ilexble band is adapted to be threaded to Secure it thereto.
In testimony whereof We ax our signature.
