This invention relates to a display sales rack for counter use, which is in some respects similar to the rack disclosed in my pending application, Serial Number 694,064, :tiled February 20, 1924, but embodies certain improvements which adapt it especially to the display of packages of chewing gum, mints, and other articles which'may be put up for sale in a similar form.

The general obj ect of the present invention is to provide an inexpensive and practical device comprising a number of carriers for holding goods of the nature specified, in such a manner that they will be displayed to the best possible advantage.` The rack contains a concealed bell or similar alarm, and improved means are provided to increase its activity or sensitiveness. The carriers radiate from a common center about whichthey revolve asa unit, and they are specially constructed with a View `to facilitating the insertion or removal of the goods, at the same time making it impossible to effect the removal without sounding the alarm.

As illustrated in the drawings, the device comprises a. broad base 10, which may be stamped from thin metal, or constructed in any other desired manner, and which sup ports a central vertical shaft 11, on which the display rack is revolubly supported. For this purpose a collar 12 is .mounted on 'he shaft 11, and supported by means of a pin 13er the like. The rack comprises a body portion 1/1, preferably in tlievform of acylindrical shell, having a top l5, and a bottom 16 secured to its ends by tongues :17, or other suitable means. `rllheupper end of the shaft 11 ext-ends centrally through the tcp 15, and constitutes an axis about 2 is central vertical section which the rack may revolve. A plurality of radiating wings or carriers 23 are supportedin symmetrical relation to the shell 14, and maybe suitably secured thereto by tongues 24, or in any other desired manner. Thesecarriers 23 are rectangular in shape, and of a suitable size to receive a `number of packages of chewing gum, mints or the like, which may be` either rectangular or cylindricalin shape, as illustratedat 25 and 26, respectively. Each of the carriers 23 is in the form` of aslieleton frame, each of its opposed faces being formed by a peripheral flange27, and the remainderfbeing open so that all except, the ends of the packages may be visible from either side of the carrier. rlhe top and bottom of the carrier are closed, andthe outer wall is closed except atithe lower end where it is cut away, as indicated at 28, to provide an opening through which a single package `may be inserted or removed from the bottomr of the carrieigas shown at 29. When inserting a package in this mrmner,l the .packages `already in the carrier are lifted up, and the succeeding package insertedfbeneath the same. Thumb notches 3() are preferably out in the flanges 27so thatthe packages within the carrier may be easily grasped and lifted. Thumb notches 31 are also cut so `that the lend of the package may be easily grasped for removing thesame. While it is necessary, in filling the carrier to its capacity, to insert the last packages through the opening 28, the lower part of the carrier may be filled directly through the face of the vcarrier by inserting.; the packages at an angle, as illust- 'ated at 32. (Fig. 1.)

In order to prevent theft, as well as to attractthe attention of customers and promote sales, a Aconcealed alarm is provided rwhich will become audible upon the slightest movement ofl the rack. For this purpose, a plurality of loops 33 are struck` .downwardly from the top 15, and serve toy support clappers 84s which are `arranged in close Cil the shaft l1. In order to make the alarm more sensitive, the bottom 16 of the shell lis cut away centrally, as indicated at 36, (Fig. 2) so as to permit a certain amount of lateral play to the lower part of the shell. rlhe upper surface of the collar 12 is convex, and the entire shell 14 and the carriers 23 are supported from the top l5, which rests upon the convex surface of the collar, thus forming a bearing from which the carriers are suspended, and about which they may oscillate laterally Whenever subjected to the slightest touch. Series of openings 37 are preferablv provided in the shell le, so that the sound may be more readily emitted.

From the foregoing description, itl will be noted that the packages of goods are held so that both sides are displayed, only the ends being concealed. The rack is suspended on the collar l2, so that the slightest touch will cause it to oscillate and bring one of the clappers into contact with the bell. will be impossible to remove a package without rendering the alarm audible. The packages may be easily inserted in or removed from the carrier when desired, but can not become accidentally dislodged.

l/Jhile I have shown and described specifically the construction of the. various features which constitute the preferred form of the invention, it is obvious that many modifications may be made therein without departing from the salient features thereof, and it is, therefore, my intention to include all such modifications within the scope of the appended claims.

That is claimed is:

l. In a display device, the combination of a base having a shaft secured to and extending upwardly therefrom, a bearing member supported by the shaft near its upperlend,'a hollow body surrounding` the shaft with its top resting on said bearing member and constituting a support for said body, said body containing compartments for receiving small packages for display, the bottom of the body having an opening larger than the shaft, whereby lto permit lateral oscillation of said body, and means within the body operable to sound an alarm upon slight oscillation of said body.

2. In a display device, the combination of a vertical shaft, a collar supported on the shaft and having a convex upper face, a hollow body surrounding the shaft and having a top resting on the convex face of said collar with the remainder of the body depending from said top and containing compartments for receiving small packages for display, the bottom of the body having an opening larger than the shaft so as to permit lateral oscillation of the body about said collar, and means within the body operable to sound an alarm when the body is so oscillated.

3. In a display device, the combination of a base having a shaft secured to and extending upwardly therefrom, a hollow body mounted to revolve about said shaft, a bearinC member supported by the shaft near its upper end in supporting relation to the top of said body, the remainder of the body being disposed in depending relation to the top, said body containing compartments for receiving small packages for display, the bottom of the body having an opening larger than the shaft so as to permit lateral oscillation of the body, a bell secured to the shaft within the body, and clappers suspended from the upper end of the body in close proximity to the bell, whereby to sound thebell upon slight oscillation of the body.

In a display device, the combination of a body member comprising a hollow shell with an opening in the center of its bottom, a vertical shaft extending through said opening, means supported by the shaft on which the top of the body rests, the remainder of the body being in depending relation to its top, said body containing compartments for receiving small packages for display, said supporting means constituting the sole support for the body, the opening in the bottom through which the shaft extends being larger than the shaft to permit the body to oscillate about its support, and means operable to sound an alarm when the body is so oscillated. i

5. In a display device, the combination of a central body member having radially projecting rectangular skeleton carriers adapted to contain small packages, each of the opposed faces of said carriers being open except at the edges so as to display bothI sides of the packages, the top and bottom of the carrier being permanently closed, and the 'outer side closed except at the lower edge which is cut away sui'iiciently to permit the insertion or removal of the packages one by one, the upper portions of the opposed lower side faces having thumb notches cut therein to permit the lowermost package to be grasped and lifted within the carrier and the lower portions. of the opposed front side faces having thumb notches to permit the lowermost package to be `grasped and withdrawn through the openin in the outer side.

. In a display device, the combination of a central hollow body member supported for rotation about a vertical axis and also for lateral swinging movement, a plurality of skeleton carriers projecting radially from the central body member and adapted to contain small packages, and means within the body member operable to sound an alarm upon slight rotatory or swinging movement of said body member.

7. In a display device, the combination of a vertical shaft, a hollow body member supported for rotation about said shaft and also for lateral swinging movement, said body member having radially projecting carriers provided with means for supporting small packages so that opposite sides thereof are 5 visible, a, bell secured to the shaft Within the body member, and elappers suspended from the upper end of the body member n close proximity to the bell, whereby to strike the same upon slight rotatory or swinging movement of said body member.
