Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE,l
ALONZO B. BATSON, 0F NEWCASTLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT(:`\AGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,075, dated October i 6, 1875; application filed September 27,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALoNZO B. BATsoN, of Newcastle, Henry county, 'State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Bit-Gages, ofwhich the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, formingpart hereof.
My invention consists in a socket or head provided with spring-clasps, into which the brace-head is fitted and held in place, arranged to slide and be adjusted upon side bars provided at their lower end with a foot-piece or guard, through which the bit extends, whereby the foot-piece or guard may be adjusted at any desired distance from the point of the. bit, and thus boring to any exact depth desired effected.
Figure l is a front elevation of my gage, showing it adjusted upon a brace head and bit. Fig. 2 is a plan of the foot-piece or guard.
A is the socket or head, into which ts the brace-head B, and is provided with the springclasps a, arranged to hold the bracehead securely in its seat inthe socket. The socket has a central opening, f, through which the bit passes. rlhe socket A is arranged to slide up and down on the side bars C by means of the lugsy b, through which the said bars pass, one on either side, and is held adjusted atany desired position on the said bars by means of the set-screws c. Upon the lower end of the bars C is fixed the foot-pieceV or guard D, which is preferably made circular, Wththe central opening-d, through which the bit-point extends, as shown. The said guard D is preferably provided with the set-screws F, as shown, carrying on their interior ends the small swivel-mounted jaws e, whereby the bit may be held centrally within the guard, and the gage rmly secured to the bit during the operation ot' boring, the said jaws e readily engaging with the flange ot' the bit.
For convenience in adjusting the gage one ot' the side bars may be marked with a scale of inches, as shown. v
Instead ot' employing two side bars one may be used, upon which the-socket maybe arranged to 'slide and be adjusted, and the foot- ALONZO B. BATSON. Witnesses:
