COMBINATION PACKING AND DISPLAY CONTAINER.
Application filed January 20, 1926. Serial No. 82,401.
My invention relates to packing and display containers in which medium or small articles can be conveniently packed for ship ment by the manufacturer and which may opened by the retailer to display its contents in a convenient and attractive manner.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a packing and display container, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and which will be attractive in appearance for counter use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a packing container which when opened becomes a self-supporting display device.
Another object of my invention is to provide a packing and display container, the cover of which, when opened, forms a straight line with the back of the portion containing the articles for sale and displays advertising matter.
A further object of my invention is to provide means which will securely retain the cover in the open position while also acting as a support for the container while on display, allowing it to recline backward at a graceful angle.
With these and other objects in view,.to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the operation and construction herein described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive, standpoint.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and more specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purposes of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my combination packing and display container with the cover closed for shipping purposes;
Fig. 2 is an end view of same;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation with the cover raised upward; illustrating the means of support in its flattened or unassembled position;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of same;
Fig. 6 is a partial front view of my container with the articles packed therein on dis- Fig. 7 is a side view of same;
Fig. 8 is a partial sectional view of same taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7; and
Fig. 9 is a partial ,plan view of the development of that portion which forms the body or compartments of the container in which the articles are packed.
The back 1, top 2 and cover 3 are formed by one sheet of material and are divided by the scored lines 4 and 5. The cover 3 may have an ornamental contour to conform with the advertising matter printed uponit. The support 6, glued or otherwise suitably fastenedto the rear face of the back 1, top 2 and cover 3 which is most clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 is divided into the center portion 7 to which the glue or other means of fastening is applied, and the sides or wings 8-8, said wings and center portion being defined by the scored lines 99. The irregular shaped cutout portion 10 is not glued or fastened to the back but is integral with the lower part of the center portion on the scored line 11. The portion forming the compartments into which the articles are inserted is made from one piece of material, said compartments being attached to one another by portions 12 which are glued or otherwise fastened to the back 1. The compartments are comprised of the sides 13, the side tabs 14, the front portions 15, the bottoms 16 and the bottom locking tabs 17. The sides 13 are defined from the portions 12, side tabs 14 and front portions 15 by the scored lines 18, 19 and 20 respectively and the front portions, bottoms and bottom locking tabs are defined by the scored lines 21 and 22.
To form the compartments the portions 12 and sides 13 are bent at right an les to one another on the scored lines 18 an the front portions 15 are also bent at right angles to the sides on the scored lines 20. The side tabs 14 are bent inward on the scored lines 19 and are held in position by the bottoms 16 and locking tabs 17 which are bent on the scored lines 21 and 22. (See Figures 3 and 5.) The compartments are rectangular in shape and are located directly above one another. When the articles A are inserted into the compartments, the back 1, top 2 and cover are bent downward at right angles to one another on the scored lines 4 and 5, which closes the container as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
. When the container is opened to display its contents the wings-88 are bent backward on the scored lines 9-9 until they assume the position illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8. The irregular shaped cut-out portion 10 is then bent downward on the scored line 11 until the V- shaped notches 2323 have been forced past the rounded out portions 2424 and into the V shaped notches 25-25 in the wings 88 which securely locks the parts in their respective positions; the wings being prevented from swinging either to the right or left by the sides of the notches 2323 and the out out portion 10 is prevented from swinging upward or downward by the sides of the notches 2525 as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8. The bending backward of the wings 88 causes the top 2 and the cover 3 to be held in a straight'line with the back 1 because of the dlrect pull exerted upon them by said wings 88. The bottoms of the wings are cut at a slight angle to the bottom of the center portion 7 which causes the container to recline backward at a graceful angle, lending beauty to its appearance and making it appealing to the eye.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described my invention together with the construction which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to the particular form shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out in other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention, and
. therefore, I claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent instrumentalities coming within'the scope of the appended claims, and by means of which, ob ects of my invention are attained, and new results accomplished, as
herein set forth, as it is obvious that the particular embodiments herein shown and described are only some of many that can be employed to attain these objects and accompli sh these results.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
