sanrcnany GARBAGE CONTAINER." 7
Application filed name 26,1826. Serial N6. 97,61 1.
This invention relatesto i-u iprovements insanitary garbage containers and particularly to a device of this character having a suitable hinged cover with convenient toot operated means for operating the same Y 7 The invention comprehends the provision of a. concrete container for garbage which is provided with a .door in the rear sideto permit the insertion and removal of a. lar e garbage can or receptacle to receive the bage, while the removable top portion has an opening therein, normally closed a hinged cover having convenient operating means therefor, housed within the c' ntainerstructure and provided with a. suitable toot pedal, so that it may be easily operated by thef'loot tor emptyingthe garbage into the container carried by the receptacle, so that it is not necessary to use'the hand in emptying the garbage." 1
In addition, the invention comprehends the novel construction of container cover and operating mechanism with theass'ociated structure of the concrete" container for mounting and housing the same in order that the cover will exclude moisture and yet be easily operable'sothat garbage may be emptied into the receptacle contained thereby.
The invention includes numerous other ob jects residing in the construction and arrangement of the partstor carrying out the invention in a most efficient and simple manner, which are more particularly pointed out in the following detailed description and in the claims directed to a preferred. form of the invention, it being understood'however, that various changes in the size, shape and an'augement of these parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope (it the invention as herein set forth;
In the drawing forming part of this application:
Figure 1 is a side eleva ion of the container torming the subject matter of this invention, showing portions broken away in order to illustrate the operating mechanisn'i for the cover. j
Fig, 2 is arear elovational view of the container.
Fig. 3 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. I
This improved garbage container includes a bottom or container section 1 which includes a bottom 2 and side walls 3, the top of the container being open, and on which is mounteda cover section- 4. The container section 1 and the cover section 4 are formed of concrete molded into suitableshape, and one of the side walls as indicated at. 5 is formed to provide inner and outer wall sections 6 and 7 respectively in adjacent spaced relation as'shown in Fig. 4 in' order to'pro :vide the inverted L shaped recess 8 for housing the operating mechanism for the lid as will be described. These inner and outer wall sections 6 and 7 respectively, are jointed by the connecting portion 9 throughout the central portion of the wall 5 and also at the edge portions as at 10. v H
The rear wall of the container is formed with an opening 11 to permit the insertion and removal of a suitable receiving re'cep tacle tor the garbage which is closed by the doors l2 hinged at 13 to the plate 14 which is suitably secured to the rear wall 3 ot'the container section- A plate 15 also secured to the rear wall opposite to the plate 14 and adjacent the edge otthe opening 11 carries the" vpivoted latch member 16 which cooperates with the keeper 17 mounted on the door so that this hinged door 12 may be normally held in closed position as illustrated in Fig. 2. V
' A platemember 18 is mounted adjacent the rear edge ot the cover and suitably secured to the cover, such as by bolts or the like 19, and is provided adj acent the opposite ends with pairs of axial alined sleeve portions 20 which receive the pintle 21 adapted to extend through the sleeve extension 22 on the cover member-23, so as to hinge this cove" member to the cover section in order thatin theposition illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. it will normally close the opening 24 in the cover section 4, of the container. This cover member'23 is preferably of pyramidal shape so that it will shed moisture, in view of the fact that the container is provided principally tor outdoor use. A suitable handle 25 provided on the forward free edge ot' the cover member 23 so that it may be suitably manually raised if desired.
One side of the cover is provided with an arm member 26 extending beyond the side edge of the cover member to receive the eye 27 of the link 28 which is pivotally connected at its opposite ends to the lever 29. This link member extends through an opening 30 in thecover section 4 communicating with the L-shaped recess 8, while the lever 29 is tulcrumed in its central portion in said recess as indicated zit-301011 a suitable rod section which is embedded in "the Wall sections 6 and 7 during the formation of the container section 1. The opposite -end of this lever 29 is pivotally connected to wall section 7 of the container section 1,
the't ermin al o'f which is'looped as indicated at '34 in Fig. 3 to provide a suitable ":toot lever. V
With this construction of garbage cont'ainer, it'will be seen that thehinge'd door '12 may be readily opened to insert a Ireceptacle for receiving and containing the garbage in the containeriection l, andthat when it is desired to emptyfigarbage 'from receptacles usually used in a house, apartment, or the like, into this container, that it is only necessary to place the foot on the loopcportion 34land upon depressingthe same, the cover member 23 will be raised sothat'the garbage may be dumped into'the receptacle inthe container 1. r
This construction is provided for use in apartment houses and the like, so as to protect the garbage 'fro'mfiies' and to prevent the escape of odors, and which'may be placed in a convenientvposition for accessby the collectors of garbage when it is used in a city, where such collections are made at regular intervals. The'lever mechanism for operating the cover'meniber 28is always housed betweenthe wall sections 6 and 7 andprotected againstthe destructive action of the elements, while the extension 34 provides a convenient foot lever, so that the cover may be conveniently raised and refuse emptied into the receptacle in the container section 1, 'Wltl'lOUt touching the container or cover in any way.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim-asnew is -1-uA. garbage container, comprising a molded container member having a bottom andsi'de walls,-said containermembers being of substantially rectangular in-hor-izontal section, the inner wall formedin'spaced parallel relation 'to one side walladapted to form a pocket withln the contalner, a coversection formed with a central opening ing in said cover sect-ion communicating with theinteriorof said container, a cover memsection having a passage formed therein communicating with said pocket, and operating means for the covermounted in said pocket. having anextension connected with the'cover movable through the openingin the cover section and amanually engageable operating projection extending through the slot outwardlysbeyondithe side wall of the container. member,
2. A garbage container, comprising a molded container section having a bottom and side walls, a coversection'mounted on said container section and havingan opening formed therein, a cover member hingedly mounted on said cover sectionadapted to normally close the opening in said cover section, one wall of said container sectionrbeing formed with a recess, said cover sect-ion being'for'med with an opening communicatmounted on the upper end of the container 'm'emb'erya'nd elosing said pocket, the opening with said recess inthe wall of'said. con
tainer section, a link member fpivotally connected tov the cover member and extend ing through the opening in said cover section, a lever fulcrumedin said recess having the link membenpivotally connected'to one end thereof, andan operating link pivotally'connecte'd to the other endof said lever having a lateral extension thereon formed toprovide a foot pedahthe wall of said container having a slot formed therein topermit the lateral extension on said op erating lever to project outwardly beyond the side wall of the container section.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy si nature.
AXEL WV. f NELSON.
