UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
ROBERT T. SUDDENDORF,
This invention relates in waste receptacles, ventlon belng tacles OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WITT COR-NICE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WASTE nncnr'rnotn.
Application filed January 7, 1926. Serial No. 79,843.

In the accompanying Figure 1 1s a vertica drawing a coveredreceptacle showing ment of my improvements.

to di receptacle body, for t Ears '8 ortion of the cot besecured and braces and ing frame which wer portion are secured ametrically opposite portions of the a bail or handle 9.
The cover 10 for the made edge
provi he accommodation of receptacle may be of sheet metal and provided with a peripheral flange 11 to overhang the upper of the body ded with a hand-hold 12.
1 and said cover may be A bracket 13' having outwardly projecting parallel arms 14: is secured permanently to the reinforced upper edge portion of the body 1 and to these arms, ears 15 on a plate 16 are hingedly connected. Theplate 16 is shaped to conform to the cover 10 and is secured to the latter, the ears 15 being formed by bending the side portions of said plate outwardly. The plate 16 extends from the edge portion of the cover an appreciable distance toward the center of the latter and at the inner end of this plate, a bracket 17 is provided. This bracket may be integral with the plate 16 or it may be made separate therefrom and secured to the cover. The bracket 17 provides parallel ears, between which the upper inwardly projecting end 18 of a rod or pitman 19 enters and to which said inwardly projecting portion of the rod or pitman is pivotally connected by means of a pin 20 passing through the same andthrough the bracket ears on the cover. A bail lever 21 encircles the lower portion of the receptacle and is pivotally connected at diametrically opposite points, as at 22, to the reinforced lower portion of the receptacle body. The lower end portion of the rod or pitman 19 is pivot-ally connected with the rear portion of the bail lever 21 and the front portion of the latter is provided with a foot piece 23.
It will be observed that the connection of the rod or pitman 19 with the cover is an apreciable distance inwardly from the edge of the latter and that the construction is such that the normal tendency of the cover is to close by its own weight and therefore the use of springs or weights to insure the closing of the cover down on the receptacle body are obviated.
In order to prevent the bail or handle 9 from falling toward the hinged portion of the cover and the operating connections, lugs or ears 24: are secured to the flanged portion of the cover and serve as stops for the bail or handle.
It is desirable that the opening throw of the cover shall be limited so that said cover may not be thrown back too far, thereby preventing it from dropping automatically to closed position when the pedal lever is released. Stops are, therefore, provided to limit the upward movement of the cover and these stops may conveniently be formed by the downwardly projecting portions 15 of the ears 15, which latter are adapted to engage the upper portion of the cam body as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1.
Having fully described my invent-ion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a receptacle body and a cover hinged thereto, of a foot lever member pivotally connected with the lower portion of the receptacle body and a pitrnan pivotally connected at its lower end to said lever member and having its upper end overhanging the cover and pivotally connected with the cover an appreciable dis tance inwardly from the edge of said cover.
2. The combination with a receptacle body and a cover, of a plate secured to the cover and provided with parallel ears, a bracket secured to the body and having parallel arms with which said ears are hingedly connected, an operating lever, and a connecting rod pivoted to said operating lever and passing between said ears and pivotally connected with the cover between the center and edge of the latter.
3. The combination with a receptacle body and a cover hinged thereto,
of a foot lever pivotally connected with the receptacle body, a connecting rod pivotally attached to said foot lever and provided at its upper end with an inwardly projecting portion normally disposed over the cover and terminat ing an appreciable distance from the edge of the cover, and a pivotal connection lo cated between the center and edge of the cover adjacent the hinged part of the latter, for the inwardly projecting portion of said connecting rod.
t. The combination of a receptacle body, outwardly projecting arms on the body at the top thereof, a cover adapted to rest on the body, ears projecting from the cover and hinged to the arms on the body and eX tended downwardly beyond the arms to impinge against the body and limit the opening movement of the cover, a lever mounted on the body, and a pitnian connected at its lower end to the lever and at its upper end to the cover at a point between the center and the edge thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
ROBERT T. SUDDENDORF.
