SHbE AND PROCESS OF MARIN G SAME.
Application med October 2, 1925. Serial No. 60,015.
My invention relates to. newand useful improvements in a shoe and the process of ,rnaking the same, and has for its primary object to provide an article of footwear of unique and novel construction, which Wlll beneat in appearance as well as soft and pliable.
Another object of the invention is to pro-' duce' a shoe or other article of footwear having the upper composed of laces, braids orstrips of material laced, braided or threaded thru a braided flange carried by the sole.
A further object. of, the invention is to provide a process for producing a shoe 5 .which consists of first slitting the sole around its edge to produce a relativel .thin lip, then perforating the lip, then laclng or braidin strips of material to make 'a plaitedike flange around the sole, and then lacing, braiding or weaving other strips of material, braids or laces back and forth thru the braided flange at opposite sides of the sole to form an upper. f I
A still further object of my invention is the production of a shoe or similar article of.
footwear having a braided flange plaited to a lip carried by the sole, and an up er formed bylacing, braiding or weaving-0t er strips of material to opposite portions of sa-i flange.
With these ends in view, this invention consistsv in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understamd how to make and use ,the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to. the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which L Fig. 1, is a fragmentary edge view of the sole, showing the perforated lip.
Fig. 2, is a fragmentary transverse section thereof.
Fi 3, is an edge viewof the sole with the ange partially formed thereon; a portion of the sole and the ends of the braids being broken away.
Fig. 4, is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the sole, showing the manner of braiding the strips.
Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 4, illustratin'g the method of producing the upper.
Fig. 6, is a side elevation of a complete shoe, constructed in accordance with the present invention.
' In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 10 represents the sole of a shoe, the material of which is slit around its edge to provide a, lip 11 and a channel 12, and said lip is provided with a number of perforations 13. It is to be. understood that this lip may be formed entirely around the sole or aroundany portion thereof, according to the type, of shoe to be manufactured.
Next, a strip or braid of material 14 is placed in the channel 12, so as to partially cover the outer face of the lip 11, and therefore said braided strip of material 14, should be slightly above the perforations 13 in said lip, and if found desirable, the st-rip of material 14 may be fixed to the lip by an adhesive, so as to be permanently or temporarily held in place during subsequent operations.
Two braids, laces or strips of material 15 and 16 are then'braided, woven or plaited about the edges of the lip 11 by first insorting one of the strips, as 15, thru one of the perforations 13 in the lipll carrying it across the strip'14, then over the edge of the lip, and again threading it thru the second succeeding perforation, leavin alternate'perforations unoccupied, and t ru one of these latter is threaded the other braid -or strip of material 16, which is then or stitch made by threaded thru the loop the other braid or stri of-material, and then carried over the e geofthe lip and threadedthru the next succeeding unoccupied perforation. This operation is continued until a braided or plaited flange 17 of any desirable length is produced. For instance: this flange may extend entirely around the sole or it may extend around only that portion which makes the toe if the shoe, according to the desires of the manufacturer or the style of shoe which-is to be produced.
' After the braided or plaited flan e is formed, a strip of material 18 is aced, threaded or woven thru the loo of the braided flange and carried back an forth to opposite parts of said flange so that the several strands of said strip are disposed across the sole in such fashion as to produce an upper designated by the numeral 19.
In actual practice the several braids, laces or strips of material may be of the same or difi'erentcolors so that numerous contrasting combinations can be provided or the shoe produced of one solid color, but where the laces, braids or strips of material that make up the braided flange color, the lace, braid or strip ofmaterial 14 should be of a similar color, as this is merely utilized for covering the raw or unfinished surface of the lip, so that said unfinished surface will not be visible between the different strands of the braids or laces.
While the strips of material braid or laces are generally 'of leather, and while this is preferablefl do not wish to be limited to this particular material.
From the foregoing description it will be particularly noted that I have provided a shoe of unique and novel construction, which eliminates the use of solid or slitted leather as the upper, or at least the toe portion thereof, as well as all ordinary stitching for attaching such upper to a sole.
Of course, I do not wish tobe limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing (from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:
l. A shoe comprising a sole, said sole being slit around'its edge to provide a lip, said lip having perforations therein, two strips of material laced about the lip and 17 are all of one modest thru the perforations therein and woven together to provide a braided flange, and a strip of material laced thru the loops of F the braided an upper. I
2, A shoe including a solo, a lip produced therefrom by slitting the edge thereof, said lip having perforations therethru, a strip of material superimposed on the outer face of the lip, two other strips of material passing thru over the outer edge thereof and interwoven to provide strip of material threaded thru the loops of the braided flange and extending back flange in a manner to produce the perforationsdn the lip anda braided flange, and another and forth-to'opposite parts of said flange above the sole in such fashion as to produce an upper. a
3. Qlhe process of producing a shoe which consists in slitting the edge of a sole to provide a lip, then perforating said lip, then interweaving strips of material about the lip and thru the perforations therein to form a braided flange, and then interwea'w ing a strip of material thru the loops in the braided flange back and forth between opposite parts of said flange above the sole to form an upper.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
