The invention has for its object to pro.-l
vide simple and ellicient structure readily mountable in cooperation with the ash doorway of a stove to be used either as a. substitute for or in cooperation with the door of that doorway, and for the purpose of gue-.reine against inadvertent discharge of ashes foin said doorway.
Vith the above and other objectsin view that will herina-.fter appear, the invention further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had te the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention in use.l

In thedrawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 indicates the front or main body portion of the ash gate, which includes theA abutment extension 2, and 3 the side wings, curved as at 4 to facilitate swinging movement as later described, and which are provided with abutment shoulders 5, the purpose of which willA also presently apiear. l Vihile the device may be made of cast iron and have its front face nickel plated to enable its use as a substitute for the ash door, it is preferably used in cooperation with such a door and stamped from a metal blank, as indicated in Figure 4 and shaped to the form* indicated in Figures 1 and 3L The structure of my improved gate and the manner of mounting the same are such that it may be used in cooperation with the ash door in a. manner rendering interference therewith unnecessary.
Vihen formed as indicated in Figure 4, the body includes extended ears 6 adapted to be shaped as at 7 to loosely receive or surround the hinge pintle 8 and be securely riveted as at 9 so as to provide a pivoted bearing for the body thereon.
The ends of the pintle S are bent back upon themselves as at 10 to provide outvardly projecting U-shaped bearings for fitting the lateral edges l1 yof the ash doorway to hold the pintle to position, as indice ed in Figures 1 and 2. c he abutment extension 2' of the front r-niay be depressed, at l2, to provide a. means for facilitating engagement by linger or implement when `it is desired to tilt the device to the lowered position indicated in Figure 1.V
The ends 10 of the pintle provide a simple removable mounting for the device, maki ig unnecessary the drilling of holes or the use of other means of attaching special bearings for the pintle 8 of the ash gate.
The pintle 8 may be mounted across the bottom of the doorway by first engaging one end 10 with an edOe of the doorway, then tilting same and bringing the other end 10 down into engagement with the other edge of the doorway. The pintle maythus be mounted before the body of the gate is connected therewith Vby the ears 6 and rivets 9 or, by flexing one side 3 of the gate the same may be mounted after complete assembly.
Wvhen properly mounted the weight of the side wings 3 will be distributed rearwardly of the pivotv pintle and cause the front 1 to close the ash doorway,` with the abutment 2 against the top edge thereof, and effectively guard against inadvertent ash discharge.
rThe curves 4 serve to permit movement on thepivoted connection while providing for substantially complete lateral closure, by the side wingsv 3, the shoulders 5 serving to limit outward movement of the. guard as indicated in Figure 2.
AThe numeral 13 is used to designate the ash door, and 14 the ash receiving pan when such is used.
It will be understood that when an ash pan 14 is used the side wings 3 work freely at each side thereof.
, It has heretofore been the experience that, upon opening the ash door of a stove which has been permitted to operate over an eX- tended period without ash removal, quite a quantity of ashes are inadvertently discharged upon the floor. This obviously results in unnecessary trouble in clearing the floor and is dangerous in that the spilled ashes frequently include live coals.
It will be quite obvious by reference to Figure 1, that my ash gate will effectively overcome the above stated diiticulty as it can oc gradually opened and the ashes observed and attended to without any danger of inadvertent discharge thereof.
From the foregoing descriptiointalten in connection with the accompanying drawing. it is thought the novel details ot construction, the manner ot use and the advantages ot my invention will be readily apparent. to those familiar v-.fith the use of such devices.

A device ot the class described mountable in a stove ash doorway having side edges, said device comprising a front and ash guard side ,vings.r` means 'tor providing a pivot hinge tor the lower edge ot the iront, and means removably mounting the pivot hinge providing means to engage the side edges ot the doorway.

A device ot the class described mountable in a stove ash doorway having side edges, said device comprising a front and ash guard side wings, hinge pintle bearings carried by the front at its lower edge, a hinge pintle upon which the lower edge of the front is hingedly mounted with the bearings thereot' loosely surrounding` the hinge pintle, and means at the ends of the hinge pintle tor detachably engaging the doorway edges to mount the said ,pintle d.'
