CLARA JANE HANEY AND SARAH ANN COLEMAN, OF EDWARDSBURG, MICH.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED BABV-JUMPERS AND SWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,817, dated December 15, 1874; application filed October 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Mrs. CLARA JANE HANEY and Mrs. SARAH ANN (JoLEMAN, of Edwardsburg, Cass county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Baby-Jumper and Swing, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a side view of our improved baby-jumper and swing shown as arranged for use.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved baby-jumper, which shall be so arranged that it may also be used as a swing, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and reliable and safe in use. The invention consists in the device formed of the bracket, the strap, the frame, the sliding cross-bar, the springs, the swiveled rod, the long cross-bar, and the straps that receive the child, constructed and arranged in connection with each other, as hereinafter fully described, and in the combination of the operating-strap with the straps that receive the child, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a bracket, which is attached to the wall of a room, a door-post, or other convenient support. To the outer part of the bracket A is secured a cloth or leather strap, B, the ends of which are connected by a buckle, so that the said strap B may be shortened and lengthened, as required. Through the strap B is passed a bar, C, to the ends of which are attached the upper ends of two rods, D. The lower ends of the rods D are attached to the ends of the cross-bar E. Upon the rods 1) is placed a cross-bar, F, which slides up and down upon them, and rests upon the upper ends of the coiled springs G. which are placed upon the lower parts of the rods D, and which give elasticity to the device. H is a rod which passes through holes in the centers of the cross-bars F and E, and has a head formed upon its upper end to swivel it to the said cross-bar. To the lower end of the swiveled rod H is attached a longer cross-bar, I. To the end parts of the cross-bar I are attached cloth or leather straps J, the lower ends of which are attached to the strap K. The ends of the strap K are provided with a buckle for convenience in securing it around the waist of the child. To the waist-strap K are attached two straps, L, which cross each other, and are designed to be passed between the childs legs, and thus form a seat for it while leaving its legs entirely free. The straps L are made in two parts, connected by buckles, so that they can be lengthened or shortened, as the size of the child requires.
As thus described, the device is a babyjumper, and when properly adjusted allows the child to have the free use of its limbs, while furnishing a sufficient elastic support to prevent the child from falling, and allow it to rest when tired.
, When the device is to be used as a swing, the strap B is shortened to raise the childs feet from the floor, so that it can be swung back and forth. For convenience in doing this, a strap, M, is used, one end of which is hooked upon or otherwise connected with the waist-strap K.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The exercising device herein set forth, formed of the bracket A, strap B, frame C D E, cross-bar F,spring Gr, swiveled rod H, long cross-bar I, and straps J K L, constructed and arranged in connection with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the strap M with the straps J K L of the described exercising device, substantially as herein specified and shown.
CLARA JANE HANEY. SARAH ANN COLEMAN.
