G. B. PUNCHES HAND PROTECTOR 7 Filed July 31 1925 Qwumtoz 5 Gedye 25. Pzazc/zes;
FATET 'FFEE.
GEORGE B. PUNCI-FEES, OF EAGLE RIVER,
WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE E. SANBORN, OF EAGLE BE TER, WISCONSIN.
HAND PROTECTOR.
Application filed July 31, 1925. Serial No. 473%.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Pononns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eagle River, in the county of Vilas and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Protectors, of which. the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a protecting de vice to be worn upon the hand while cranking an internal combustion engine.
An important object of the invention is to provide a protecting device of the above mentioned character, which willprevent the hand being bent back upon the wrist, whereby spraining or breaking of the same is prevented, and also protecting the back of the hand and the forearm from being struck by the crank, in the event that the engine should back-fire, upon cranking.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is of simple construction, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a protecting device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line 33 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the device.
I have illustrated my protecting device as applied to or embodied in a gauntlet, while the same may be applied to a glove, mit, or other means to hold the same in proper position upon the forearm and hand.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion of the glove, carrying the usual thumb and finger stalls. The body portion carries a cuff 6.
Arranged upon th back of the body portion 5 and cuff 6 is a rigid protecting element or plate 7, formed of sheet metal. This protecting element or guard is curved in cross section and is provided near and spaced from its forward end, with transverse slits or notches 8, in order that the forward end portion 9 may be bent or set at a slight angle with respect to the body portion of the same. Arranged beneath the protecting or guard plate 7 is a soft compressible pad 10, formed of felt or the like, and the guard plate 7 is attached to this pad by rivets 11 or other suitable means. The pad 10 projects beyond the edges of the guard plate 7 and this pad is stitched at its longitudinal edges as shown at 12, to the back of the cult 6. The forward end of the pad which projects over the back of the body portion 5 is free from connection with the same, thus allowing the body portion of the glove to move freely, forwardly, with relation to the guard plate.
In use, the glove is applied to the hand in the usual manner, and the crank may be grasped in the hand, in the usual manner, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. Upon cranking the engine, should the same backfire, the forward end or portion 9 of the guard plate will prevent the hand from being bent rearwardly, unduly, with respect to the forearm, and hence undue sprains or breakage is prevented. The hand will be thrown from the crank, and the guard plate will also protect the hand and forearm from injury, should the crank spin around, and strike upon the back of the hand or forearm.
When the term glove is used in the claims, it is intended to cover any hand receiving device, such as a gauntlet, mit, or glove, or equivalent devices.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to "ithout departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a glove, of a soft compressible pad attached throughout the major portion of its length to the back of the glove with its forward end portion free from connection with the glove, and a rigid guard plate secured upon the pad and extending throughout the major portion of the length of the pad and over the unattached portion of the pad.
2. The combination with a glove, of a soft con'ipressible pad arranged upon the baokof the glove, ineuns attaching the pad to the hack of the glove with the forward end portion-of the pad free from connection with the glove so that the hotly portion of v the glove is free to move away from said pad, and a rigid guard plate secured upon the pad and extending throughout the 11121101 portion of the length of the pad, said guard plate having a forwardportion positioned 10 over the tree portion of the pad and (lisposed at an angle with respect to the body portion thereof.-
In testimony whereof I a'lfix my signature.
GEORGE B. PUNCHES.
